I had been on Wellbutrin but had to stop due to increased agitation and rage issues. I am now on Celexa and have noticed weight gain. I also wake up with puffiness around the eyes. Has anyone experienced this? Will it go away?? The Celexa is supposed to treat depression, but if I keep gaining weight, I really WILL be depressed!!
Has anyone noticed weight gain with Celexa?

I took Celexa for 6 months in the last half of 2016. During that time, I went from 137 lbs - 160 lbs. Now off for a year and feeling great, I'm working to undo what was done.
I remember noticing the weight gain and mentioned this to my shrink. She said "are you sure you aren't eating and drinking the pounds?" Well, yes, good doc, I was. But why was I eating and drinking so damn much? My usual control and maintenance weren't working.
The drug works and you'll feel emotionally better. But you might look a lot different weight wise when you find that balance.
Hello, I have been on Celexa for over a year. Emotionally I feel much better but I have gained almost 20 pounds. I have noticed it makes me more relaxed mentally to where I don't care if I work out or care what I eat. I have always been conscious about what I eat and even trying to get in a workout, but this medication really makes me not care about myself. I am going to see my Dr. about switching to a different medication.
I have been on celexa for 5 yrs. I have gained 100 lbs of which my dr insist that is not from the meds. I think she is under informed. I'm scared to stop taking it, don't know what to do to stop this. . Know my joints are deteriorating because of the weight and ive had to go through threr joint replacement surgeries. This sux; i want out
Most definitely!!! When I started taking Citalpram HBR (another form of Celexa) I was still around the same weight in year 2016. I started seeing an increase in weight at the beginning of this year and gained 15 or so pounds. That was almost 6 months into taking the medicine. Like others have mentioned, staying active will help.
So I've been on Citalopram (celexa) 20mg/day for seven years now for anxiety, and I'm 51. Since I started taking Citalopram, I had at one point gained close to 20 pounds. Keep in mind, though, that up until that point I had been the same weight since college. Took a lot of effort, but I did manage to drop ten pounds and kept it off for a year. Now I gained back five of those pounds, so I'm still up by 15 lbs, and I do work out at least 3x/week, bicycle 27 miles round trip to work couple of times/week, walk the dogs daily, don't smoke or drink, cut out sweets five years ago, have always eaten healthy foods, no meat. I closely watch my caloric intake, but STILL gained the weight. I've chalked it up to Citalopram, which I've always suspected having been the culprit. I'm tired, though, of having to watch every day my calorie intake, have never had to do this before Citalopram.
So I'm going to take a break from the med and see if my weight goes back to normal. I feel comfortable doing so. One bonus of the med, however: no hot flashes whatsoever during menopause!!
ALL antidepressants, although Wellbutrin and Trintellix are considered more weight neutral, have the potential to cause weight gain in a few users by changing metabolism and fat storage mechanisms.
It's trial and error to find the one that controls your symptoms with the least or any side effects. Or the other option which is to live with depression/anxiety.
I too have knowest the weight gain, my doctor was given me this to help stop hot flashes because I couldn't take hormones replacement, but needless to say I still have hot flashes, but on top of that I knowest a really big weight gain , so now that I see other people are having same problem, I will be stopping my Celexa 40 mg.
I've been on Celexa for about 6months now, for anxiety and having rage issues,
I Started on 20mg dose, but had to reduce to 10mg due to weight gain, I am. Active, and lift weights (heavy) regularly, my weight before the celexa, was 85kg, and just before I stopped taking celexa it increased up to 102kg, that didn't help me much in the way of anxiety, I had to stop taking this med, and my weight has dropped 4 pounds in a week already, im better of being slim and anxious rather than being fat.
Oh my gosh back in 2010, i started getting panic attacks bad, i was diagnosed with a anxiety disorder, i took so many different types of antidepressant medications celexa was the only one the helped me i have been on since 12/11 i have gained 60lbs i was a 7 now im a 15/16 im scared to change medication... i just cant get any bigger i dont know what to do.
ALL (with the possible exception of Wellbutrin in most cases) psychotropic medications have the propensity to cause some weight gain because they affect the basal metabolism and fat storage mechanisms. This occurs according to clinical studies in <10% of users.
Sad, but true.
I'm perfectly willing to pay the price for my mental health and well-being.
I originally was on Paxil, wellbutrin, many years ago, and I gain 30 pounds within 5 months from 125 to 155, and no matter how much exercise I do, or even tried to eat as little as I can, the weight kept going, it made me depress, so now I steady wean off the Paxil from 40 mg to 20 mg, and finally stop taking it, I lose back all the weight, I know that it is this paxil that cost the weight gain for me not the Wellbutrin, however, I feel depress again, every morning I don't feel like getting out of my bed, I get excessively angry for tiny little thing. My doctor subscribe me with Celexa, but I am so scare that it will cost weight gain, and that is why I come here for answers as if I gain back all this weight again, it will made me more depress ! I read most of the posting, most of it said they gain weight, I think most of the anti-depressant made you gain weight, I think I am not going to take it after all. Thank you for all the posting !
I am on Lexapro 40 mg.. Sorry for the mix up.
i was on Celexa for 11 years. Tried Wellbutrin but it made my heart race. Been on Lexapro 40mg and have gained 22 lbs in 1 yr. I am small framed and 5'3. My normal weight was under 120.
Do i want to be happy & fat or depressed and thinner? It's all in my belly and legs.
OMG... I thought it was just me! I had the worst knawing hunger pain and I thought I was going to pass out. Right after taking this pill... my appetite climbs. Nothing seems to subside the stomach pain not even food. It is an unsatisfiable hunger..one that Risperdal clients should know exactly what I'm referring to. My doc said this could help with my anxiety but I had no idea about the weight gain side effect ehh. I'm going to ask for zoloft instead- I can't stand docs that put people on this. And yes, weight gain only makes the depression wayyy worse.
Oh yes ! And the weight gain doesnt stop - of course I'm 72 so part of the gain is age related but from the very start of using Celexa I packed on pounds.
