the enamel on my teeth started to peel off after taking this med for a few years. My teeth seem to be decaying from the inside out.

Yes Gabapentin causes tooth decay. I started using this drug about 15yts ago probably about 6months after I started having my teeth break off, decay rapidly, the dentist would pull some and told me I needed them all pulled and dentures. I was so ashamed I was in my early 49s when I had to have them all pulled & got dentures.I never even thought it was any medicine just thought I had something going on then this happened. I wasn't the only one in my family who's had this problem my husband started taking it about 6yrs ago and his teeth which he'd never had a cavity or any problems with his teeth started decaying and breaking and he has list 3 so far, our son started taking it about 1yr ago and he too is having tooth decay and breakage of them. They need to be held accountable for this drug doing this to people its painful when you have teeth problems and its all from this drug. Everyone should get together and start a lawsuit. I'm sure there's a million more that have this problem and don't know its from this drug.
I agree! The company should be held responsible for this nightmare!! I’m having sensitivity to my teeth and gum line. I have been taking gabapentin for about a year on and off from when I had cancer and this was supposed to help with neuropathy. I thought I would google this drug and see if anyone else is suffering from teeth problems and I see that it is the culprit!! I will no longer take this and pray that it’s not too late. Using sensodyn and hoping it will correct. If I had only known sooner!!
So when does the class action start? I'm ready!
The same is happening to me and was told to get dentures!
I believe the same thing I have been taking it for chronic back and neck pain. It's started worrying me so I Google it and saw your post it starting from the inside out.
YES! In the last 6 months I've gone from having a great smile to having lost five teeth and a bridge. It's been a nightmare. My dentist made a hideous "flipper" that while it cover some empty spaces, I lisp when I talk and 2more teeth snapped off since, one of which helped hold the appliancein place. I'm devastated having experienced another tooth snapping off just today, hence my current curiosity as to whether others have had a similar experience. Now I see the answer is "yes". I started taking it in May of 2015 for Fibromyalgia and my dose has been increased to 3600mg/day. Right now I wouldn't mind throttling these fat cat drug makers!!! A class action suit is in order in my (currently not so) humble opinion.
I'm on Gabapentin and Tramadol. Since starting these meds my teeth have drastically changed :( I'm known for my big pretty smile and healthy teeth. My teeth are falling apart this last 6 months. Holes at the gum lines and my teeth feel thin and like sand paper. (Loss of enamel) I'm not a hard brusher and stay clear of sodas. I have a cleaning done every 6 months and my dentist was SHOCKED to see the condition of my teeth. In a ton of dental pain along side my Fibro pain. I'm devastated. My dentist said both Tramadol and Gabapentin can cause dental problems. I can't even smile anymore...
I am so very sorry. This loss of your big beautiful smile just makes me so sad. I am in the same boat. I'm about to lose six teeth to Gabapentin. One of them is in the front and it looks horrible. Everybody has always told me what a beautiful smile I have, but with my crown right in the front looking terrible and now the decay starting, I don't want to smile either, and mine isn't nearly as bad as yours. I hope by now that you have gotten dentures and that your beautiful smile has returned. ❤
I'm so glad to see others with this problem, although I'm sorry for you all as well. I've been taking neurontin plus 2 other psych dugs for 19 years. I too was known for my big smile. Perfect white teeth. Over the years they have become crooked and have turned grey. My hygienist is horrified with the condition of my teeth and gums. I have to tell her it's the drugs I take every time I go in for a cleaning! I think my bottom teeth are dying. I'm not sure what is worse, the depression and pain, or the weight gain and loss of my facial structure and smile. Like all of you, I do not smile or laugh anymore. Hang in there all of you. You're not alone in your struggle.
I have had dental problems now as well. I have been doing the 6 month appointments and cleanings but on my last visit the x-ray said that all my front teeth should be taken out as most of the enamel is gone up top. The teeth were fine 2 years ago.
I was prescribed with Gabapentin for my neck pain and sleeplessness.I only ate it for few days and started having strange rashes all over my body. My doctor said it does not look like the rashes are due to this drug. I stopped taking the medicine and the rashes slowly ended. But then my teeth became real sensitive and pain started. I never in my life had any dental trouble so it was new to me. In just a week the pain spread to both side of my jaw and it feels like my teeth would fall. I never thought all this was happening due to Gabapentin but I also don't think it is normal to have all of sudden 6-7 teeth started pain and almost falling. The X-Rays are not showing any cavities. I am confused and sad with the situation.
Ive been on gabapentin since 2003 and have taken between 1800 and 3200 mg's daily. Over the last three years my teeth have basically fallen apart. My enamel has worn away almost completely and have had to have several teeth pulled out. One dentist said my teeth just crumbled apart and she had never seen that before. I believe it has to be from the gabapentin as its the only med ive been on for that long.
I am about to start Gabapentin for my MS pain but am so very worried about my teeth. I have been on Lyrica for 8 months and my teeth are just falling apart in places. A crown has just literally fallen out and my gum line is black in areas. I have pain under some bridge work and am terrified that it will all fall out. I had hoped that the new drug would be better that the old so am crossing everything. Will post again when I've been on the gabapentin for a while.
I was on Lyrica for 7 years with no problems. I switched to Gabapentin about 5 weeks ago and it's just beginning to work on pain. Needless to say I've had 2 tooth fall apart; one split down the middle, and the other broke off at the gum line. That is what brought me to this forum originally. All of my teeth hurt in general although they look good on the outside. I can feel the nerves swiggleing around~ like small electric currents. I think I will forgo the Gabapentin for now.
Yes, and never identified Gabapentin as the source. I have been on high doses of the drugs for over two years. I had no problems with my teeth until Dec 2010, and by Feb. 2011 the entire right side of my mouth, upper and lower teeth, have begun to fall out and crumble from decay. It has happened so rapidly and has been devastating.
I have been using gabapentin for over a year now and have found a significant deterioration in the health of my teeth. During a routing check up last week my dentist took x-rays which revealed decay and gum disease inside the tooth, and I too am now waiting for an appointment for extractions! She did say that I was not the only person taking these tablets to experience oral health problems but couldn't (or wouldn't?) be more specific. My pain nurse however, has been much more explicit in warning about problems with teeth. Pain or dentures? Its a tough call.
Hi AuntyP!
I've been taking Gabapentin for 3 months. It's hard for me to say if it causes oral problems because I've had receding gum lines and tooth decay for a long time. I wish I had an answer to your question. I've heard of others who have this problem, and yet, I personally don't know. It does scare me hearing others who do. It's an excellent med for me. Please talk to your Dr. about this. He/she will be able to look at their Physicians Desk Reference and see if this is common. Let me know AuntyP what you find out. I'm extremely concerned.
Thanks for listening to me.
A case of gummy bears,

I am not sure about that particular med but my Dr and Dent. both said the continual use of anti-depressants and psychotropics will do that. My teeth are going from the inside out also. I have lost many and will probably be in dentures sooner than I should.
I'm not sure myself but how interesting to see this. I was on this med for quite sometime. About 3 yrs ago i noticed little pieces of enamel coming off, then lager pieces of teeth and ending with my teeth literally breaking off at the gum line. After about a year off the med the tooth/enamel loss has almost completely stopped. Unfortunately my teeth are still gone. ;). How long were any of the other tooth loss folks out there on Gabapentin? Curious!!
I'm having a awful time with my teeth. My enamel is bad.. I've had 4 back teeth break off at the gum line. I have a bottle of water in my hand 24/7 I stay thirsty. I've been on gabapentin and oxycotin for many years. Well the last 8 years my back teeth are breaking off at gum line. I thought could this be results of the rubber like material they put in the oxycotin and if it is the problem then what is this doing to my bones , organs... I've been diagnosed with cronic pain 24/7 I have alot of different issues they are all bad. I take the meds to try cope some to get thru even tho it don't take all my pain away by far.. It makes it tolerable to get thru life. But since I started taking what people call rubber pills my teeth went from strong white teeth to dingy weak teeth. If I could find out if these rubber pills are what's causing my teeth to break off at gum maybe they would change them to non rubber pills.
I'm just worried that they could be hurting my organs if anyone's knows anything please let me know please. I've took pain medication since my accident 17yeara over the years. Well back 6years ago I was prescribed my first rubber made pill and not long after my teeth started. Does anyone know how I can find out what's going on. I brought it to my docs attention he looks at me like I'm nuts. I've ask 3 different docs and they all acted the same family doc, pain management, neurosurgeon... Maybe they just didn't know. I've never left a message on here but have read alot of interesting stuff on here. Is there any docs on here that help people. Well everyone be blessed with love &happiness through out your life...
My teeth are also going from the inside out. Two months ago, I had to have 6 teeth extracted. The oral surgeon took all 4 right upper molars, a front tooth, and a left upper molar. A member of my family has decided to pay for an upper denture, so I will soon be having the other 8 upper teeth pulled, under anesthesia. I only noticed these problems when I started taking 3200 mg of Gabapentin for very severe nerve pain. I am no longer on that dose, I had to decrease it. It was affecting me cognitively and I was not functioning well, and then it started affecting my speech. Fortunately, the nerve pain is better, but I would take the nightmare of nerve pain over the nightmare of 3200 mg of Gabapentin any day. I am sorry for all of your pain and struggles. Maybe someday there really will be a miracle drug that will rid us of all of these troubles.
I also had the enamal problem, then tooth loss, many breaking off at the gum. My dr also said not aware of this problem with this drug. There are just too many of us with the same problem for it not to be gabapentin. There should be some sort of compensation, I have only a couple of teeth left and cannot afford dentures.
I haven't had this problem and wish you luck. This med has been so helpful to me in coping with trigeminal neuropathy. Some take Lyrica, and maybe that is a possibility for you. I too have heard of this rare side effect and I am not a doctor, just an informed patient. Hold on and be well.
It is probably a combination of all of your medications as I too found out that my teeth are in horrible condition and my dentist who has treated me even before I was diagnosed with RSD and on pain meds and others never told me until this year when I had to have 2 of my upper back ones on both sides removed and have cavities worse than ever that dry mouth is a serious symptom for all the meds I take and that most meds cause this and now has me using OTC Biotene which comes in a mouth spray, mouth wash, and even a gel. I use both the spray and the mouth wash which does help but not in the middle of the night through the AM when I get up.
I've realized I am going to have to begin taking care of my dental health as much as all my other problems or I won't have any teeth left in a few years.
He knew I've been on the medication for over 11yrs but never once mentioned that I needed to do things to remedy the dry mouth problems until 4mos ago. I like the Biotene products and you can get them at any grocery or drug store. I found they are cheaper at Wal Mart.
Best Wishes for your health and teeth,
Rhonda, IN
This side effect has not been reported for Gabapentin, it seems to one of the rare side effects, you must seek medical advice from the doc who prescribed the med, he/she would be more familiar with you medical history & could suggest a remedy or perhaps prescribe an alternate, take care, be well & safe!
I did ask my Dr about this particular problem and he claims that none of the meds I was on would cause such a problem. Like the Doc would tell you true anyway. They need those drug reps coming in and giving them free samples to push the latest miracle drug out there. And those drug Reps bring food, coffee, lunch, etc. We all know about biting the hand that feeds you.
After a few weeks of increasing gabapentin to a "therapeutic dose", I had some oral changes including gum redness and sensitivity, as well as a concerning sloughing of gum tissue. When I decreased my dose, my gums began to normalize, but with some existing sensitivity as I continue on a smaller dose.
I have been on just one or two 300-mg gabapentin for the past couple of months and it has done wonders for my 40 years of chronic back pain. Shortly after starting it, though, a piece of a molar cracked off and I found out yesterday I need to have a crown put on that tooth. I'm going to reassess my use of gabapentin and weigh the pros and cons. Those crowns are expensive!
I also had tooth decay after being on this medication. I had beautiful teeth prior to this, I now have onltb2 teeth left the enamel started falling off an my teeth started breaking. I have a friend who has had the same problem and her doc told her it was from the Gabapentin.
I've been on Gabapentin for about 20 years. Like scarface9, I've also been on just 300mgs (I couldn't tolerate more than this, but thankfully 300mgs helps my neuropathy a lot). However, after being on it for somewhere between 6-12 months, I too began having teeth break off at the gum line and I lost most of my enamel. I never imagined that it could be the Gabapentin, I suppose because it took several months for it to start happening. As several people mentioned, I am also embarrassed to smile. At least I'm 63 years old. Not that 63 is a dinosaur, but I really feel sorry for younger people who are dealing with this problem. At my age and with all my spine and other physical problems, I won't stop taking it now because I need the help it provides. But it must be hard for younger people to decide whether to stay on it and develop additional teeth and gum problems which cause pain, or get off of it and return to horrible neuropathy symptoms.
I think a class action lawsuit is long overdue. Why didn't any doctor alert me to this problem with Gabapentin? Isn't there another drug that helps with neuropathy as much as Gabapentin--but without this horrendous side effect? Although it answers the question regarding my oral problems, I now seem to have even more questions since learning this. Someone should have to answer for this.
