the enamel on my teeth started to peel off after taking this med for a few years. My teeth seem to be decaying from the inside out.
Gabapentin - has anyone else had tooth decay problems from this medication?

I was searching for this topic when I came across this group chat. I was put on the highest dose of gabapentin 600mg every 4-6 hours for 8-12 months. I noticed a gradual deterioration of my teeth after about 3-4 months. When I saw my dentist she stated that they have never seen this type of degeneration. My teeth began to crumble and break. I have since had to have all my uppers removed, and I am going to be forced to have all my bottom teeth removed within the next 2-3 months. I had several capped teeth, as well as my natural teeth and the caps even began to break apart. My jaw bone (upper and lower) the same thing. I expect there will be a "class action" suit in the near future, but everything equal I would rather have my teeth back!
Hi, cb!
Unfortunately this is a known and reported potential side effect. This is from the literature:
"Gastrointestinal
Common (1% to 10%): Dry mouth or throat, dyspepsia, dental abnormalities, gingivitis".
I doubt a lawsuit would be effective.

I took gabapentin since 2016 and I lost all my spongy jaw bone. Be careful no one tells you and then you can't even get implants. You may be able to get zygomatic but even that is in question. My implants started coming out one by one. I paid around 50k to have my teeth done and gabapentin ruined them.
I’ve been on varying doses of gabapentin for over 20 years now for an anti inflammatory medication. I suffer from a whole host of chronic diseases including:
• Fibromyalgia
• Multiple Sclerosis
• Emery-Driefuss Muscular Dystrophy
• Ehlers Danlos Syndrome
• Degenerative Disc Disease
…and if you’re like me, I didn’t think one person could have all of this crap either! Not really sure how I lucked out
I had been on Gabapentin for 4 years when one day I went for my yearly cleaning. I had missed a year or two because of shortages of dentists in my area who took my insurance, and my inability to travel very far due to severe pain. My X-rays showed that all but 2 of my top teeth were rotting on the inside, but there was very little decay on the outside. Teeth don't just rot from the inside, there has to be something going on. My bottom teeth were savable but I couldn't afford the dental work needed to save them because my insurance didn't cover it. A family member offered to buy me a set of dentures and I took him up on his offer. I also take other meds that cause dry mouth, gabapentin caused me horrid dry mouth, plus I take another medication that is known to be very hard on teeth. I am convinced that it was the gabapentin that caused the tooth loss because I had already been on the other meds and my dental exams were good, for the most part.
I take 600mg of Gabapentin 3 × daily, and yes, I do have extensive tooth damage. At first I blamed the bonding on my front teeth, but this was my 3rd time of getting the bondings, and they only last for so long. When I lost large parts of 2 molars I realized that the damage was likely because of the Gabapentin. I can't afford the cost of dental care right now but quitting the Gabapentin isn't possible.
Hi Cleo, do you think the gabapentin is doing something for you in terms of enhancing pain medication or in relation to epilepsy, the reason I'm asking is because I was taking gabapentin to enhance my pain medication supposedly, My doctor weaned me off gabapentin my pain levels did not increase or become worse, however, I did notice that my mood lifted, my thoughts of self-harm including suicide decrease, my cognitive appearance of early on-set dementia disappeared, I was less irritable with others, I had however already lost all my teeth by this stage, I would seriously ask myself if the drug is actually having an effect or is it masking something, I stopped taking it by decreasing the dose 1 tablet a day and seeing if my pain changed or altered and there was no change, I hope my answer is helpful. I cannot speak to the direct connection. But I started taking Gabapentin in 2018. I am currently at the maximum dose, 600mg three times a day. Two years ago, while chomping on some 5 year old Runts candies, my sister in the background telling me I am going to break a tooth... I bit down and broke TWO teeth. They severed at the gumline. A quick sharp pain, followed by nothing. One tooth in my hand and the other swinging like a garage door. From that point, like dominos I have systematically lost all but three of my upper teeth. All the same way, biting on something soft, gritting my "teeth" once. Gone. The dental practice I went too, said that he was a bit surprised as the teeth had enamel clear down to the gumline, where it had disappeared, and the roots below had enamel. But at the gumline it was gone. Essentially, no pain, no infections, just one by one they broke off at the gumline. I wish I could have answered you directly, but now I too am wondering...
I suggest you have your Kidneys checked because there is a study being done in Spain, I developed early-onset age-related kidney complications and I'm convinced, it also destroyed the lumbar spinal discs I have none between S1 and L5, fortunately, my last two teeth showed the roots were soft causing the last right tooth to snap, the dentist that removed the remaining root, I said the Left one was going to do the same and she wiggled and said you're right and removed it the root she could mash with a dental tool they had been treating me for gum disease from 2001-2022.
After only a couple of months since commencing Gabapentin last year, I noticed that I suddenly started having dark patches on several of my teeth. Move forward 12 months and every tooth has bits of enamel broken off and more dark patches. Recently retired, I had time to visit the dentist and having explained the condition of my teeth he was expecting to find decay and the need to professionally clean my teeth but was shocked that this was not a problem. He asked about changes to medications, and I identified 2 medications - Kapanol and Gabapentin. Checking back through online grocery orders I found the tooth whitening kit I purchased a few weeks after I noticed the staining, and it was AFTER the Gabapentin. Six teeth have been essentially rebuilt and 3 are likely to need root canal or removal. They are loose and hollowed out, an abscess under one which is being treated with antibiotics. It is a wait and see game now as to whether they will be saved or have to be removed...
needless to say I have stopped taking Gabapentin. Research led me here, but reviews of dental journals showed that research on the impact of Gabapentin is not mentioned. The professional info (PI) sheet is vague, stating that Dental Abnormalities occur in 1.5% of patients but fails to describe what this means (https://www.ebs.tga.gov.au/ebs/picmi/picmirepository.nsf/pdf?OpenAgent&id=CP-2010-PI-04233-3&d=20240623172310101). In Australia from 2020 to 2021, there were over 4 million prescriptions for gabapentin and pregabalin (https://australianprescriber.tg.org.au/articles/gabapentinoids-a-therapeutic-review.html) so even if 1.5% have problems it will be impacting the oral health of a lot of people and will be costing a fortune in dental bills. In Australia, consumers can report an adverse event or problem, actual or suspected, to the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) and I certainly intend to do this (https://www.tga.gov.au/safety/reporting-problems/report-adverse-event-or-problem-consumers). I would encourage everyone to do the same to the equivalent in their jurisdiction, so it can be studied further.
Yes! Dark patches, Mine were at the gumline come to think of it. It was almost, well it was dark brown or even black. But tough, it didn't easily wipe away. In fact no at all. I could chip it away, I never made the connection!
I've been taking gabapentin for over 15 years for neuropathy and pain from chronic Lyme disease. The tooth problems started with fillings falling out, crowns falling off, teeth needing root canals. Later teeth fell out or broke at the gum line. In the last few years I stopped having dental work done because there's little pain and I know once the dentist starts pulling all the bad teeth, they'll all need to come out for dentures and I guess I'm not ready. I'm a retired RN. My theory is that gabapentin causes the nerve in the tooth to die. That's why the teeth seem to rot from the inside out.
I have to agree! The dentist I saw said he had I lost five teeth normally, I would be sitting there in tears.I never felt anything other than a quick sharp pain. That I assume, was just the teeth pulling from the gums.
I took 800mg of gabapentin for 2 years, however, I have been off of it for at least 7 years.
That being said, 2 years ago my teeth started falling apart. They started breaking, huge cavities, root canals, 2 teeth extracted and now I have 5 teeth that broke and are so bad my dentist said there is absolutely nothing she can do to save them. They have to come out and I have 2 molars on the back right side that have crowns, yet have plenty of tooth left under them that have become so badly infected they also must come out.
I have always taken good care of my teeth and even use a mouth rinse my dentist recommended. Prior to 2020 I had no problems other than the occasional cavity which was filled.
I told my dentist about gabapentin and she had never heard of it causing any problems. I told her to add it to her list of drugs that cause teeth to decay.
I don't know 100% if Gabapentin is the cause, however, I find it extremely strange that all of a sudden my teeth are literally falling apart. I also have 3 teeth in the front that have bad cavities that must be filled and they already have fillings in them.
There has to be a way to prove gabapentin is the cause of our teeth falling apart for no plausible reason.
If anyone else is having this problem or has any information on the side effects of gabapentin I would love to hear them.
Unbelievable! I don't remember there being a warning on the label about this as a side effect.
The manufacturers and some health professionals don't accept gabapentin causes tooth and gum problems I can verify it does I had a full mouth clearance because of its effects on my teeth. I'm happy to share what I know from my experience of taking the drug from 1999-2011
And I believe anyday. I had just a full amount of work done, replacing the old almagum fillings with new materials etc. Nothing ever said about my teeth rotting at the gumline and breaking off. Thank you for your post!
I had perfect teeth. Very little dental work until I started gabapentin. I've been on it mostly since 2005. Now my teeth keep getting cavities and I am having gum issues. No matter how much I brush, they keep rotting. I have partials. All my root canals break off shortly after getting them. Gabapentin is the only drug that I am consistently on. It makes me grind my teeth. Now I have vertigo. Constant ringing and shooting pains in my ears.
Hi I have many disabilities and was put on Gaberpentine in 2015, I looked after my teeth and was quite proud of them, now as someone has said my teeth are starting to rot from the inside. I too look like someone who is homeless.
I feel very embarrassed by my teeth, I feel so angry this has happened it's awful that we are dealing with so much, and this situation certainly does not help.
I need to have dentures made.
My gums have receded badly, and painful. My teeth are also rotting. I have been taking 300mg three times daily since early May. It has been helping, so I’m torn! Dizzy, or rotting teeth! And they blame it on my age…WHAT!!
I started taking gabapentin in 2006 for peripheral neuropathy and I started having dental problems.
Up until that time I had no issues whatsoever.
Never even had a cavity and then all of a sudden I had nonstop problems.
All of my teeth started rotting from the inside out, exactly like the previous poster said.
The drug manufacturers have to know what's going on.
They probably knew about it before any of us even started taking it.
We really should sue.
Make the sons-a-biscuits pay for implants.
I have been on Gabapentin since 2018 and my teeth have literally been rotting from the inside out. It’s to the point where I need all my teeth removed now, the pain and embarrassment of looking like I am homeless is horrific. I don’t want to have conversations with people looking this way, and eating in public is not something I will no longer do. The mouth pain is awful.
Trying to advocate and explain what this drug is doing and having Dr’s say it’s not from the drug is a slap in the face.
Canadian doctors have their heads stuck in the drug companies pockets for their cut of the profits in my opinion.
