Adaptil Spray
This treatment applies to the following species:The secret to happy dogs
Nursing mother dogs naturally produce an appeasing pheromone. This pheromone provides reassurance to the puppies, helping them to feel safe and secure when encountering new experiences and unknown environments. Clinical studies have demonstrated that a synthetic analogue of the dog appeasing pheromone (D.A.P.®) helps provide reassurance and comfort to puppies and dogs of all ages.
ADAPTIL® contains D.A.P.® and is therefore recommended to help prevent and reduce stress-related behavior in puppies and adult dogs. ADAPTIL® has also helped to make puppies and adult dogs more responsive to behavioral therapy and training.
The efficacy of ADAPTIL® has been demonstrated by numerous studies published within reputable scientific journals and presented at international conferences (under the trademark D.A.P.® until 2011).
Canine Stress
To adapt to a new environment or coping with a temporary challenge is potentially stressful for most dogs.
In some dogs, mild fears and worries can develop into phobias or stress-related conditions. Particular attention should be paid to puppies during the socialisation phase (from 3-16 weeks): negative or the lack of experiences during this period may make them more likely to develop stress-related behavioral problems in adulthood (noise phobias, separation-related disorders, etc.).
Uses
ADAPTIL® Spray contains D.A.P.® which can help control or prevent stress in puppies and adult dogs, helping them to deal with challenging situations such as:
• travelling
• other challenging situations (adoption, moving house, new member of the family, staying in a kennel, staying alone at home, fireworks, thunderstorm etc.)
Combining ADAPTIL® Spray with ADAPTIL® Diffuser or ADAPTIL® Collar may provide optimal results for dogs showing multiple fears in different situations (see table below).
ADAPTIL® Spray is not recommended for use in cases of hyperactivity or aggression.

Instructions For Use
• To Reduce Or Prevent Stress During Travelling
Spray 8 to 10 pumps of ADAPTIL® at least 15 minutes before the dog is introduced into the environment (car, carrier, kennel etc.) one spray should be administered to each of the 4 corners, 2 sprays to the floor and 2 sprays to the top of the carrier or kennel. The effect should last approximately 4 to 5 hours. When transporting your dog on long journeys, we recommend re-spraying the travel carrier or the interior of the vehicle (with the dog removed from the carrier or the car). Please wait 15 minutes for alcohol evaporation.
• To help manage stress-related behaviors in other challenging situations (adoption, moving house, new member of the family, staying in a kennel, staying alone at home, fireworks, thunderstorm etc.), in combination with ADAPTIL® Diffuser or ADAPTIL® Collar
ADAPTIL® Spray can be sprayed directly on bedding, inside crates or indoor kennels, at least 15 minutes before the dog is introduced into the environment. Renew application twice a day.
ADAPTIL® Spray should not be directly sprayed on animals or near an animal’s face.

Frequently Asked Questions
What pheromone is in ADAPTIL® and is this safe to humans?
The pheromone in ADAPTIL® is D.A.P.®. and is identical in nature to the canine appeasing pheromone secreted by nursing mother dogs from 3-5 days after the puppy’s birth. As pheromones are species-specific, canine pheromones will have no effect on humans or other pets.
Can ADAPTIL® Spray be used directly onto the dog?
No, ADAPTIL® should never be applied directly onto a dog.
How long will it take to have an effect on the dog? How long will the effect last for?
ADAPTIL® Spray is proven to have an almost immediate effect, lasting 4 to 5 hours. Renew application after this time if necessary. Please remember to leave the object which has been sprayed to dry for at least 15 minutes before introducing the dog to the area for alcohol evaporation.
What type of behavior problems will not be helped by ADAPTIL®?
If the behavior is unrelated to stress (over-excitement, aggression, lack of toilet training, hyperactivity or boredom), ADAPTIL® will have no effect.
Do I need to use ADAPTIL® Spray, ADAPTIL® Diffuser or ADAPTIL® Collar or several of them?
In some situations, for best results, you may wish to use several of them (see table above for more information).
Can the liquid from the ADAPTIL® Spray be used in the ADAPTIL® Diffuser?
No; ADAPTIL® Spray is alcohol-based and should never be used in the ADAPTIL® Diffuser.
