In animal studies, coal tar has been shown to increase the chance of skin cancer.
As well as its needed effects, coal tar topical (the active ingredient contained in Theraplex T) may cause unwanted side effects that require medical attention.
If any of the following side effects occur while taking coal tar topical, check with your doctor or nurse as soon as possible:Rare
- Skin irritation not present before use of this medicine
- skin rash
Minor Side Effects
Some coal tar topical side effects may not need any medical attention. As your body gets used to the medicine these side effects may disappear. - Stinging (mild)—especially for gel and solution dosage forms
