What is meloxicam and rizatriptan?

Meloxicam and rizatriptan tablets are used to treat acute migraines with or without aura in adults. It is a combination tablet containing meloxicam and rizatriptan that is taken when you have a migraine. It will only treat a migraine that has already begun and will not prevent headaches or reduce the number of attacks. The maximum dose is 1 tablet every 24 hours.

The 2 ingredients in meloxicam and rizatriptan have different mechanisms of action. Meloxicam is an NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) that relieves pain, reduces fever, and has anti-inflammatory effects. The way it works is not completely understood but is thought to involve inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) and prostaglandin synthesis. Rizatriptan is a triptan medication that is thought to work by binding to 5-HT 1B/1D receptors located on blood vessels inside the brain and sensory nerves of the trigeminal system, although the exact way it works is unclear.

Do not use meloxicam and rizatriptan for hemiplegic or basilar migraines, migraine prevention, cluster headaches, or in children due to safety concerns or unestablished effectiveness.

Meloxicam and rizatriptan gained FDA approval on January 30, 2025, under the brand name Symbravo. There is no generic.
