Is Xtampza ER a Controlled Substance?

Official Answer by Drugs.com 1 Jun 2016

Xtampza ER (generic name: oxycodone) is a controlled substance. Xtampza ER is an extended-release, abuse-deterrent narcotic analgesic for the treatment of chronic pain. A DEA schedule II narcotic, Xtampza ER has a high potential for abuse.

The capsules are given as a long-term opioid treatment for severe pain without adequate alternative treatments. Xtampza ER capsules prevent dangerous and potent rapid release of the opioid when chewed or crushed, but allows flexible administration of the product by sprinkling the capsule contents on soft foods or into a cup, and then into the mouth or feeding tube.
