I have been taking Bupropion XL 150 for only 2 days. It was prescribed to treat depression, fatigue, confusion, etc. I take it around 8am. I do not really feel any effect, except I am completely wiped out by early afternoon. This wasn't the case prior to starting this medication. The past 2 days I have napped at 3 pm, then back to bed by 9 pm. Has anyone else experienced similar results? Over time will this subside, or is this the wrong medication for me?
Wellbutrin - Bupropion XL 150 make anyone else tired?

I have been taking WB for a total of 24 weeks now. Started with 150mg SR BID for 3 months, then switched to 300mg XL for almost 2 months. The first week of WB made me so manic like I had to get things done and I was talking a mile a minute. It wasn't a bad feeling. It made me feel so much better.
Afterwards, the malaise, fatigue, sleepiness, and nausea hit. for 22 WEEKS. It was relatively mild-to-moderate when I was on the SR version, but the side effects shot through the roof when I switched to the XL version. I was taking it at 7am and the nausea overcame me at around 9am. It was so severe that even if I was lying down, if I moved slightly, it made me so close to vomiting. I couldn't do much except to sleep all day, wake up for an hour or two, then go back to sleep at night.
After two weeks on the XL, the side effects subsided back to mild/moderate levels. I was able to move around, but I was still lightheaded, nauseated, fatigued, felt sudden onset of acid reflux, and this annoying brain fog crept over me the whole day. Caffeine didn't work for me at all. Riding in cars and talking with people still made me feel sick to my stomach despite used to having an iron stomach.
After a total of 23 weeks on WB, all of a sudden a switch inside my brain was turned on. It felt like all those side effects in the beginning went away, had this "you gotta do what you gotta do" attitude without the mania I had felt before when I first started, and wasn't afraid of speaking my mind when I knew if a situation was unfair/wrong (I am VERY INTROVERTED with a VERY RELIGIOUS background that turned me into a quiet person who felt shame, depression, and guilt every single day). I'm happy to say that I am a "normal functioning member of the human race" lol. Waking up isn't a chore, doing chores isn't a chore, and most importantly - studying isn't a depressing/overwhelming chore. The only annoying side effects I have to deal with is the tension headache (possibly because I'm studying too much), dry lips, and odd taste in my mouth.
TL;DR: I was on 150mg SR BID then switched to 300mg XL daily. The side effects really really really sucked. If you can stick it out (I was a rare case of having these adverse effects for 22 weeks), then you become a better version of yourself where you have the drive to accomplish things (even menial tasks). If you can't wait that long because of certain circumstances (i.e., life, job, school, family), then WB may not be for you. The only side effects I'm dealing with right now is tension headache, dry lips, and odd taste in my mouth.
I'm over at depressionforums .com if you have any other questions. :)
I have been on Wellbutrin for 4 days now (XL 150 take one in morning) and I, not unlike the others here, am very tired around 3:00 or 4:00 pm. I am very aware of symptoms in my body and this is clearly new for me. I am guessing it will subside over time. Not foggy just tired.
I started taking the generic 150 mg twice a day 5 days ago. I at first thought my fatigue & sickness was from the Methotrexate, but I soon realized that wasn't the case. The 20 mins after taking the wellbutrin, I would have to sleep. I would wake up for 40 minutes here & there & have to go back to sleep. That or I would just pass out... I felt narcoleptic. Not to mention I had terrible migrants & due to the other medication, I can't take any pain reliever. Today I didn't take my wellbutrin. I feel SO much better. I actually got up, showered & didn't feel like dog poop. I called my doctor, who told me it's very odd that I'm tired & he wants me to keep taking it until my next appointment in 8 days. I told the nurse I cant. I have a child at home & I babysit a 2 year old. Taking this medication is literally a danger to my children because of how I can just pass out.
I'm hoping my doctor can fix this with another medication because wellbutrin just isn't for me. I tried celexa first & it also made me tired, but nothing as bad as this. I've never felt worse in my life.
I took WellB for 6 months and my need to sleep constantly never subsided. It also made me very emotional. My doc told me that I was experiencing less common side effects but it was happening all the same and it was making me miserable. I had to switch back to Paxil, Klonopin and Provigil. :-(
I started taking this for mild depression and ADHD. I too experienced tiredness, especially the first week. I was dehydrated! The tiredness went away after I started drinking A LOT more water. If you experience this, try drinking a lot more water than you normally do. It should help. If not, see stop taking it and talk to your doctor.
Wow me too!
I have been taking it in the morning 8am and I've been napping all~day. I've been on it for about a week & 4 the last few days I've been exhausted. I'm just now realizing that it's the Wellbutrin. I wonder if I take it at night will it help me sleep! I was on Zoloft but I gained 20 pounds in less than 2 months..
I have been taking wellbutrin 250 mg (100 xr and 150 xl) for over 20 years. I take it at night and find it easy to sleep. I was originally proscribed it for depression, but I have come to believe that I was misdiagnosed and actually have narcolepsy which it really helps me with. The reason is, wellbutrin has an effect on many people where it causes them to enter rem sleep later in their sleep cycle. A lot of people think rem sleep is deep restful sleep but it's actually the opposite, it's the sleep where you dream and your mind is most active. The earlier a person enters rem sleep, the less good sleep (stage 3 and 4) they get, consequently the more chronically sleep deprived and tired they are. That's what narcolepsy is, chronic lack of good sleep and an over abundance of rem that begins soon after they drop off. Wellbutrin has the capacity to diminish rem sleep and prolong deep sleep cycles.
If you find yourself tired, fatigued, see and hear things that are notthere just as you are falling asleep or waking up, are forgetful, irritable, have trouble concentrating, feel foggy, are over weight, and are able to sleep on wellbutrin, you may have narcolepsy which is not a brain disease but an auto immune disease.
I am really interested to know more about Wellbutrin and its effect on REM sleep. Do you have any sources that you could post the link?
I personally noticed that Bupropion 300mg XL works much better for me at night since it helps me sleep and I wake up feeling rested. Otherwise I usually feel exhausted in the morning, like jet lagged exhausted all the time.

I am on day 13 of taking Wellbutrin XL 150 mg per day; I take it at 6 am every day. So far, I have not experienced any side effects other than severe hot flashes once or twice a day - the sweat pours off of me and it lasts for several minutes. This medication has definitely improved my ability to sleep at night! I become really tired by 9 pm, asleep by 10 pm and sleep through the night until 5 am. I haven't been blessed with the gift of sleep for many years - was averaging 2 to 3 hours a night with multiple wake-ups in-between. I feel mellow but focused on this medication. No tears the past three days. Not sure if the medication is helping with the tears, or if getting restful sleep is helping with the tears. Either way - it feels good to be rested.
I started Bupropion 14 days ago and wasn't having any side effects except for an almost non-existent appetite up until two days ago when I started to feel very tired. I laid in bed for about two hours after waking and that is something I NEVER do because I can never just lay in bed not doing anything. Same thing this morning. I decided to take my daily dose in the p.m. to see if that will help. I really hope this drug works for me. I do know one thing; my libido is back with a vengeance so I'm thinking that's a good sign.
Yes. I get extremely sleepy. My Dr told me that I could take it in the evening or w/my seroquel @ bedtime. I normally take it around 6pm, however when I forget, I take @ bedtime. Taking it in the evening gets me in the slow down mode, so when I take my nightly meds, I've got a headstart to b able to sleep. The Dr told me that it's unusual that it makes people get sleepy, tho others do experience it. I still have that side effect & I've been taking it since Mar 1, 2017. Hope that helps others to know, they're not the only one's that has that side effect.
Did the extreme sleepiness ever go away ? I’m on Bupropion HCL 150mg once a day and I seem to be in a constant fog. I’m just sleepy all the time.
Same here. I was on Vyvanse 30mg which helped with concentration but I still didn't have enough energy, so 2 weeks ago, we added Wellbutrin XL 150mg. Its had the opposite of the intended effect, seems to have diminished the effect of vyvanse and by 4 or 5, I feel totally wiped out and just want to go home and get into bed (which I can't do with 2 young kids). I've tried playing around with the times of administration for both meds, but nothing has helped.
I began 150mg Wellbutrin a week ago, added to 100mg Zoloft that I've been taking for two years. The first day I had shakes that led to serious fatigue. No more shakes after that but have been completely exhausted by 2pm and have no difficulty laying in bed for hours, I have no energy. It's only been a week so I'll give it more time but it feels horrible.
Yes I am having the exact same experience! Wellbutrin im on my second day and im completely wiped it is 1:30 pm and i just realized this happened yesterday too. I may try a stimulant around this time of day to combat this, like green tea or something. But I was encouraged to give it time while system adjusts.
If it makes you so tired, why don't you try taking it at bedtime? You would probably get a good night's sleep and be alert the following day. And your doctor might discuss this with you, and he might suggest upping your dose to 300mg.
Wellbutrin is usually known to be a stimulating medication. Maybe a different dose and different time to take it will help?
I was prescribed one a.m. and one p.m.
I started taking 150 xl about 5 days ago and I am wiped out by 2 to 3 in the afternoon to the point in which I can't function. I take it in the am with adderall and it still drains me. It's like living in a state of pure exhaustion so I'm extremely calm because i just want to sleep. Trying to determine whether or not to stop it.
hi
I take adderall too. I have been feeling drained as well. Can you please tell me if you ever found a solution or answer for this. They keep switching my meds and I'm ready to give up i'm over it. Please help
Glad I found this particular thread, even though it's a bit old. I've been on Wellbutrin for quite some time, and had been very happy with it. More recently, I noticed days where I felt like I was in a fog, and I was constantly exhausted by the afternoon. I had chalked the exhaustion up to something else. That something else may be a factor, but maybe not the main culprit.
I've taken myself off for a few days. So far my energy seems to be better and I think I'm seeing things a bit more clearly. I seem to be very sensitive to a number of drugs, so I wouldn't be surprised if I happened to encounter a lesser known side effect.
