I have been taking Bupropion XL 150 for only 2 days. It was prescribed to treat depression, fatigue, confusion, etc. I take it around 8am. I do not really feel any effect, except I am completely wiped out by early afternoon. This wasn't the case prior to starting this medication. The past 2 days I have napped at 3 pm, then back to bed by 9 pm. Has anyone else experienced similar results? Over time will this subside, or is this the wrong medication for me?
Wellbutrin - Bupropion XL 150 make anyone else tired?

When I was first prescribe the generic Wellbutrin I started out 150 XL once a day and it had no effect at all. About a month later I started on 300 XL a day, i’ve been on that does for about three months now and it makes me so tired I have to take it right before I go to sleep at night. I’m not sure why our bodies react this way I thought it was supposed to give you energy. Sorry I couldn’t be more help :/
Today is day 3 for me and I am SO sleep midday. From what I've read online, this should subside. Fingers crossed
Hello! I started taking this for anxiety 3 weeks ago. I was heavily fatigued for months prior to this. I am now starting to feel like myself again. I started seeing the difference about 3 days ago. It takes time for this medicine to start working. I was told about a month. I think that is about accurate as i’m Starting week 4.
I don't know if this thread is still current. Took Lexapro for a month. No results, gained 5 pounds and headaches. Now on Wellbutrin for a week.
Unfortunately, it is the holiday season and I'm exhausted. I am very into physical fitness and often run 5Ks, etc. Right now I have no interest and feel kind of foggy. I pray it passes.
I started meds because of underlying depression. Midlife crisis? Was doing all good things in my life, but with no passion and low grade anxiety. So tired of this feeling of being in a rut of mediocrity. I have a very small social circle. Couple that, with this lack of energy and it is quite lonely.
I also have been put on it again for the second time and found it made me tired as well. so I take it at night with all my other pills. I've been on it 3 months now and still take it at night.
Most will tell you to take it in the am but that didn't work for me; I just kept falling asleep throughout the day.
I have had Wellbutrin a few years ago but it was to stop smoking. I don’t recall any troubling side effects then. However I am trying it again for anxiety / depression. I’m on 150mg. I took the med in the morning. So far I find I feel very tired / drowsy on it. I can fall asleep anywhere. I was told the side effects will last around 2 weeks. I’ve only had one dose but I feel like I could sleep all day. It’s like my whole body feels tired and sluggish. I also haven’t had much of an appetite all day which isn’t a bad thing since I have a lot of weight to lose. I think I’m going to switch my dose to the evening maybe around supper time to see if that works better for me. Hopefully I don’t feel like this all the time on the med. Everyone seems to react different to this medication and I’m sensitive to a lot of different medicines I seem to get many of the negative side effects.
I do feel a lot more relaxed though and my mind isn’t racing with worry over every little thing. Although I don’t want to feel dopey and that’s sort of how I’m starting to feel on it. I guess it will just take time to see how I react.
Hello, yes they can make some people tired. I take 300 mg (sr). 2 150's a day. I was taking them in the morning, then went to bed for 3 hours. Now I take them in the evening. At a higher dose of 400 a day it made me very anxious, and alert and freaked out a few times. Every thing is different for us all but since it has only been 2 days, you should stick with it for at least 3 weeks hopefully your tiredness will fade. Best of luck to you.
I had a lot of side effects taking Wellbutrin. They got worse over a time of 6 weeks.I had extreme tiredness, nausea, foggy headed, could not sleep at night even with sleeping pills. It felt almost like the flu, but no fever, aches, etc. I did have some pelvic pain. And headache all the time. I quit about 6 weeks ago and my headaches are just now beginning to subside. Taking Tylenol did not help the headaches. I could sleep in the daytime. Physical activity did not make any difference. I had a lot of anxiety. I quit taking it. I had problems when I donated plasma, bruises, hematoma, low flow, etc. And my protein level went down drastically.
"Wellbutrin XL
Very common (10% or more of users): Headache (up to 34%), migraine (up to 25.7%), dizziness (up to 22.3%), tremor (up to 21.1%), SEDATION (up to 19.8%)"
"Side effects have been reported to be generally mild and transient. They are most common during the first 2 weeks of treatment and decrease in intensity and frequency with continued treatment. They generally do not lead to treatment cessation."
"While depressed mood and lack of interest in activities may need up to 4-6 weeks to improve, disturbances in sleep, energy, or appetite may show some improvement within the first 1-2 weeks. Improvement in these physical symptoms can be an important early signal that the medication is working."

Not even close for me. Just get tired the more time I am on this drug. I may just quit
I have taken Bupropion for nineteen years. It has been fine during that time. I cannot find any site that says sleeping is a side effect. So I am just not sure. You have only taken them for two days. With most antidepressants a minimum of two weeks is necessary. This sleeping might be an early side effect that will go away.
I started taking Wellbutrin a few weeks ago and it’s making me super tired, too! I told my therapist about this side effect and he had never heard of it. I’ve started taking it at nighttime.
I'm a female in mid 20s. I had similar effects. The first 2 days, I took it in the morning around 7 a.m. and I felt a boost of energy, I felt great. Then after about a week of taking it in the morning, I started feeling sleepy during the day. I've always had sleep problems since my early teens, for whatever reason I can't get to deep sleep and I always feel exhausted in the morning no matter how long I sleep. Now taking Bupropion 150mg XL just exacerbated my excessive daytime drowsiness. So I went back to my doctor & she upped my dosage to 300mg XL. Same symptoms, extreme exhaustion during the day that I wanted to sleep-in til 1pm, which is obviously unrealistic and impractical.
So I thought, let me take it at night while I'm reading right before bedtime, since it already gave me a sedating effect. I did and I noticed I fell asleep rather quickly (within 30mins, usually takes me +2hrs) AND woke up feeling somewhat rested... I didn't feel the dreadful exhaustion that usually hits me during the morning and lasts throughout the day. I was able to go on about my day, calmer than usual but still somewhat alert. I can't remember the last time I was alert during the day. Didn't notice any problems with focus. So I've been taking 300mg Bupropion XL at night for the past 1.5 weeks and I noticed this somehow works much better for my body chemistry. I no longer had that boost of energy I experienced the first time I took it, but this "stimulant" somehow helps my sleep. I have no idea how or why. I don't feel as exhausted during the day AND I can fall asleep before 11am like a normal human being!!! I'd forgotten what that feels like.
Since I started the switch to night time dosage on May 7, 2018, I'll try to post an update (if I can remember) in a few weeks and let you know how I feel.
Hi! Your experience is very similar to mine. I was wondering if anything changed. Thank you in advance.
I took wellbutrin about 10 years ago and it worked fine and I remember touting its effectiveness for depression and no side effects. Three weeks ago I started on 100 mg 2x daily and it turned me into a raging b... h. I was exhausted, high anxiety and anger.
I adjusted the dosage down but side effects continued. Last two days I take half pill at night and none during day. It makes me sleepy, I sleep well, and awaken with energy but no anxiety.
These drugs work differently for everyone. As we get older, less is more.
Some drugs that I took 10 or 15 years ago, I cannot tolerate at all. I am 66 years old.
I am new to Wellbutrin. Doc has me on 450 mlg a day. Take it in the morning. Also take 30 mlg celexa. I am so tired, exhausted. I feel like I’m cloudy, can not concentrate at all. Everything is foggy. Anybody else having these issues. Will this go away?
I just started taking bupropion 150xl last week and Im having the same problems.Im so exausted and drowsy I just want to sleep and Im normally high energy..Also it wakes me up with interrupted sleep every night, Im thinking due to time release. Ive never been on any meds before so Im not experienced or have anything to compare to, however I was told it gives you a pick me up/energy helps as an appetite suppressant and overall motivation of mood..I have felt the opposite..So I guess Im saying youre not the only one with these symptoms..My question is does name brand Wellbutrin work better and not these same issues...
I've been taking Wellbutrin for about 4 years now, originally to help me stop smoking, and for mild depression. I take a lot of medication 2x a day and something was making me so tired, I almost couldn't function. Well, after talking to my Doctor about getting off this medication, I started on a tapering schedule, and taking it later so I could watch for side effects. THIS is the medicine that was knocking me out. My mother found me sleeping at the computer desk, and I had only been there about 5 minutes. I never never sleep at a desk, I have sleep apnea and am scared of not breathing so if I get that tired I go back to bed. I didn't make it today, and I don't remember it either.
