I have been taking Bupropion XL 150 for only 2 days. It was prescribed to treat depression, fatigue, confusion, etc. I take it around 8am. I do not really feel any effect, except I am completely wiped out by early afternoon. This wasn't the case prior to starting this medication. The past 2 days I have napped at 3 pm, then back to bed by 9 pm. Has anyone else experienced similar results? Over time will this subside, or is this the wrong medication for me?
Wellbutrin - Bupropion XL 150 make anyone else tired?

I am so glad I stumbled onto this thread! I have been on Bupropion XL for about 2 months. My Dr. recently increased my dosage from 150 mg to 300 mg. I just woke up after about 18 hrs of sleep and feel like I could go back to bed! I am calling my Dr. today. Thanks you for sharing everyone.
Since you have only been on this medication for 2 days , consider giving it more time and follow up with your Dr.
I'm amazed at how many people are experiencing tiredness on Bupropion, while their doctors are saying they d' never heard of it as a side effect of this particular medication. I'm no exception here. I'm currently in week 7 of Bupropion 150mg and weighing out the pros and cons. It worked wonders for me in the first 5 weeks; I felt energized, balanced, and productive, but not manic or 'synthetic', just the best version of myself. It didn't interfere with my sleep or sex drive and basically didn't give me any side effects at all. After 3-4 weeks, I started experiencing memory issues. At one point, I couldn't even remember the name of one of our dogs! Finally, week 6 was the end of the honeymoon and I started feeling extremely tired and rather sad. I found myself crying over some ancient wounds and traumas, not being able to work, feeling extremely sluggish, and sleeping up to 12 hours a day.
I am also experiencing mild palpitations and my blood sugar levels seem a bit erratic. I'm trying to stick it out, hoping the pros will return but am not too optimistic. This happened with other antidepressants in the past, namely Citalopram and Sertraline, and I always had to stop using them as fatigue and drowsiness were just too much, even after 3-4 months.
Wow. This little thread is an informative gem I'm thankful to have come across. I can only echo my experience of the same side effects others have already reported. Like a few here, my prescription for bupropion targeted ADHD (and depressive anxiety) to help boost motivation and keep me on task -- as an adjunct to a stimulant, no less. However I, too, experienced a sort of chronic fatigue -- an almost hypersomnolence that took on a narcoleptic force especially in the early to mid afternoons. I had to fight myself in trying not to nod off at my desk (even though I've always been more of an insomniac who can forget about even trying to fall asleep unless I'm at least in a comfortable, fully prone position). Likewise, it tended to give me an emotionally shorter fuse, although fortunately not incredibly so. FWIW, I seem to be sensitive to norepinephrine affective meds and have noticed similar side-effects from SNRIs, and the SSRI escitalopram. But it was surprising to experience this from what's also supposed to be a dopaminergic medication.
I have the same problem. Extremely sleepy throughout the day. I almost felt drunk kind of.
I have been taking sertraline for about 3 months. 150 mg of Bupropion was added 4 weeks ago and it makes me tired and hungry. I take it in the morning and the sertraline at night. I tried taking them both at night and I was tired the whole next day and could barely function. I am giving it a couple of months and will have the doctor discontinue it if this doesn't improve!!
I recently took Wellbutrin for about a month and a half. I took it in the morning and could not sleep at night. The funny thing was I could sleep in the daytime, but if I took it at night I could not sleep, even with sleeping pills. I felt extremely tired, fuzzy-headed and could not think clearly. I looked like I had not slept for a month. I decided to wait and see if this would pass. It only got worse. I quit taking it. It took about 3 weeks before that feeling passed. I still think I feel some effects of it, though it has been several weeks since I quit taking it. I also take Levothyroxine and think there is an interaction between them. I have ADD and it did not help with focusing, concentration, etc. I was physically active during this time. Physical activity made no difference in how I felt. I donate plasma and a sample of my blood was tested during the time I was on Wellbutrin. My plasma level was too low for me to donate. it took a few weeks to get my protein level up so I could donate again.
I’ve been taking Wellbutrin for about 3 months now and at the very beginning I almost stopped because it made me so anxious and jittery. I took it in the morning and had to stop drinking coffee. Over time the anxiety has gotten better and I’ve added my coffee back. But, now after I take it I do feel exhausted. That’s how I came across this thread because I looked up if it was possible for it to cause drowsiness. I’m glad it’s helped with the anxiety- My dr. replaced my Prozac with it which I was taking for anxiety and depression and I was skeptical because I had always heard it didn’t work so well on the anxiety aspect. Prozac was great for me for both for many years but out of nowhere it seemed to stop working. Anyhow, this week I plan on trying to take the Wellbutrin at night instead and see if that helps.
I find it interesting that Prozac stopped working for you. I was on Effexor for over 20 years and it just stopped working for no apparent reason. Now I take Wellbutrin 300 mg. Just started week 5 and I can’t sleep more than 6 hours

Hello, I been on Wellbutrin 150 for 2 weeks now and I too get tired sleepy angry, and sad. My Doctor gave it to me for anxiety & to supress my compulsive eating. He told me it takes 2 months for the side effects to go away and calm me down. I will give it a 3 month trial and if it don't work by then I am going to switch. However, I found very helpful counselling sessions with a psychologst and most insurances will pay for it. Going 1x a week or every 2 weeks for 1 hour does help. Please try counselling along with your medications you will see a world of positive difference. Some programs have 6 weeks to 6 months free counselling if you don't have insurance. Dial 211 in your city to find out places that help. In our city in Florida it is the crisis center. Some churches offer counselling as well if you prefer faith based.
God bless all, hope this helped.
I've been on Wellbutrin 300xl and I've been getting tired a lot around noon and it could be because I haven’t been taking the sleeping pills they gave me so I can sleep good at night. Ask your doctor for Trazodone It helps you sleep through the night so you can feel well rested in the morning for when you do take the well Wellbutrin.
Trazodone should not be taken with Wellbutrin.
Trazodone should not be taken with Wellbutrin.
I've been on Wellbutrin 150xl for 1 week now and from the very first day of taking it, I felt like I hadn't slept in years. I was so tired even in the morning right after taking it. So, I've started taking it at night and wow the difference is incredible. I sleep great and wake up refreshed and feeling pretty good. I'm taking it for quitting smoking and I'm supposed to go up to 300xl once a day at this point (1 week after start of taking) and I wonder if there will be any change after the dose increase. It's so wild because my doctor said I was get energetic on this stuff but yeah, not me. Even Nyquil has the opposite effect on me ;)
I was just prescribed Bupropion and I kept thinking... why do I feel like I'm in a daze? And why so many headaches and feeling like a Raggedy Ann doll & wanting to fall asleep??
It seems suspiciously connected to how I feel mid afternoon. I could barely get home and can't eat my dinner; I'm just too tired!
Signed - going to lay down shortly...
I have taken 75mg daily of Effexor XR for about 20 years (I'm 45 yrs old) for major depressive disorder. It keeps me from the deepest darkest depression, but i still have a lot of depression and sadness. For a few years I have tried a lot of different anti depressants, in addition to my Effexor XR, but really only experienced extreme hunger or complete loss of libido. So now my doctor is trying me on Wellbutrin... actually I take the generic, and began this just about 3 days ago at one 100mg in the morning and another 100mg in the late morning. I have only done the 1 pill in the morning because less than an hour after I take it I am SOOOOOO exhausted that I can't even barely stay awake... and the whole day I am just wanting to go to bed to sleep. My whole body feels heavy and like it's in a downright exhausted just want to sleep mode. It does seem to have stabilized my mood and sadness somewhat... probably since I'm too darn tired to really feel much.
So I'm going to tough this out and see if my doctor would be ok with me taking it at bedtime. Then hopefully around that "1 month" mark the sleepiness will even out for me. If ANYONE else had had good results from taking it at bedtime, let me know... Thank you... and I'll try to come back to keep you all updated.
I was weaned off of 40mg of Citalopram because I wanted my libido back. Am taking 150mg XL of Wellbutrin now for over a month. I am exhausted most of the day. At first, I didn't make the connection that perhaps it was the Wellbutrin that made me so tired. I am going back to Citalopram. I do not want to be this tired all the time. I did try taking the Wellbutrin at night, and fell to sleep quickly. However, I am still tired during the day. I have decided it is not worth it being so tired all the time. I would rather have my usual energy than libido. Going back to Citalopram.
I posted on here a while back about the same thing. I’ve been on Wellbutrin after switching from Citalopram too. I wanted to let you know the side effects of Wellbutrin did go away for me after a month or so. I liked how Citalopram helped but it gave me over 100 pounds weight gain in a few months due to feeling constantly hungry and my libido was decreased for sure so I understand that. I’m on 300mg Wellbutrin now for anxiety / depression and I take in the evenings only because my depression hits me harder then. I have actually lost weight and my libido has returned, I have less anxiety for sure. I would recommend sticking with it, the benefits outweigh the short term annoying side effects, at least in my experience. If you can drink coffee or tea I sort of had to increase my caffeine intake for a bit until the fatigue went away. This drug has really helped me though.
So today was my first day taking Wellbutrin 150mg XL once daily in the morning. Thirty minutes after taking it at 8am, I found myself in a raging mood where I was screaming like a maniac at my kids. I took my daughter to the hair salon to get her hair done and fell asleep in the chair, I have never done this before. The stylist had to wake me up to let me know he was finished with her hair and I was so embarrassed. I nearly crashed my car on the way home from the salon because I was so drowsy. I have to get off of this medication, I drank 3 cups of coffee today and still feel exhausted and I usually drink 1 cup a day and feel fine. This is the worst medication ever and I can’t be around my children using this.
It made me very irritable at first too and tired. I don’t know why. I almost went off it too but my doctor encouraged me to stay with the med and gave me Ativan short term to help while my body adjusted. I was also very tired. I ended up switching to the evening after several months of being on the drug. It doesn’t make me tired anymore at all. I’m glad I didn’t go off the med it has helped me a lot and I don’t feel like a zombie like I did before. I’ve even lost weight on this med. I gained 100 pounds quickly in something like 6 months to a year on Citalopram so I don’t think I will be going back to that one. Wellbutrin seems to be tough in the beginning but it did get much better for me.
You will probably feel tired for up to a couple weeks and until your body gets used to it. I seem to have the opposite reactions with this med. It gave me extra energy , but I had crazy carb cravings in the afternoon and had a hard time at 1st sleeping at night. I have been on it for 6 months now and everything has leveled out except that the past 2 weeks , all of a sudden about 2 to 3:00 in the afternoon, I am just exhausted. if I sit down on the couch I will fall asleep, if I lay down I am out for like 3 hours. Like all meds, everyone responds differently. I am now at 6 mths, where you are with the afternoon tiredness, but I did not start that way. You will probably not feel like this in a few weeks. If so, let your Dr know
