I have been taking 50mg of sertraline for anxiety for 16 days and the side effects are still really bad. Sweating, hot flushes, headaches, nausea, waves of anxiety and panic, running to the loo and generally feeling awful. The doctor doesn't know if this will settle or if I have Serotonin Toxicity so they are unsure if to take me off them. It seems a shame to be three weeks in and to have to now try something new. I have never felt so bad. Has anyone had a similar experience??
Sertraline - How long do the side effects last?

Well I'm so pleased to read these messages as today I finally completely broke down and begged for help. I started on sertraline 5 months ago and struggled every day. It has helped my depression but I'm crippled with anxiety and panic attacks. My psychiatrist added in quetiapine to help with anxiety but it has given even more side effects. I am also type 1 diabetic and when my anxiety is high my blood sugars rise drematically. I've had such a bad week I'm almost housebound and have no quality of life anymore as I can't do anything on my own. I've lost all my independence and today I called my cpn and told her I can't go on. I said I want to come off sertraline but I'm terrified of becoming even more anxious.. I've been given some diazepam to help me just now but I feel so desperate frightened and hopeless.
I describe myself as experiencing anxiety but it is more like absolute terror. I'm trying to hold on but I feel my life is so awful just now I just don't know how much I can take.
Many people are misdiagnosed for anxiety when all they need is to get a endoscope for a stricture, which is closing of the esophagus. A person may also experience back pain with the symptoms of anxiety or panic.
Hi, I started taking sertraline on 4th Dec 2018, so about 5 weeks ago.. Doctor prescribed it for me to help with depression/stress/grief. I also have panic attacks if I drive on the motorway so I always try to avoid these anyway. Side effects weren’t to bad at first and felt a bit more relaxed inside but last few days I’ve felt awful - really dizzy and felt very unsafe whilst driving, almost like I was going to pass out and my hands and head were going numb.. Been waiting for doctor to call me back today with no luck.. don’t know whether to carry on taking them or not. Feel like if I drive I could be heading for a nasty accident but have to drive to work..
I also started taking 50mg Sertraline on 4th Dec for anxiety and depression. It's been a massive roller coaster, I had immediate side effects feeling spaced and weird, this calmed down then after about 10 days became incredible stressed and panicky, could not sleep, very agitated in the day - horrible. My doc gave me 2mg diazepan, which certainly helped. I now have diarrhoea every single morning, feel low and agitated most of the time - could this be Toxicity?, I'm seeing my doc next week for a review. Has anybody else suffered with diarrhoea?? I hate the idea of giving up at this stage but feel so low right now.
I have recently been diagnosed with EUPD formally known as BPD. I started with 25mg of fluoxetine, after consulting with GP increased to 50mg I stuck at this for say 3month,as I saw little change I switched to citalopram 25mg but only took this on and off for a 2week before a specialist changed me to 50mg sertraline to be take each morning, promethazine 25-50mg and quetiapine 25mg each night. I started taking the latter medication 3 days ago and for the past 2 days I have been struck with diarrhea and I’ve been constantly vomiting as well this I have hot flushes on and off with bouts of shaking. I think it’s the sertraline and I’m tempted to stop and go back to citalopram. Was anybody else in this much pain and shall I just suck it up and continue?
Hi sweetie,
I am 18. Currently on 50mg of sertraline for Anxiety and Panic Waves / attack’s.
My journey has been one hell of a ride, first week I felt like I wasn’t even on this planet. I really struggled, I was sensitive to light, noises, felt almost sedated.
Then after week 1 things started going really well, no panic attacks, the odd waves of panic / dread but so much better. However now I am on week 3 / 4 and I have started having a really upset stomach, either diarohea or constipation, I cannot eat anything so I’m waking up feeling sick to my stomach mornings, and weirdly experiencing hot flushes first thing in the morning, my skin almost burns and I sweat immensely and then it clears up in 5 minutes. Anyone else had this?
I am doing so well though, I feel that I have 5 good days and then 1 hum dinger and 90% is the time my panic attacks / panic waves are night times, so I’m 18 and sleeping in with my mum on these nights.
sertraline has changed my life, for the better. Hang in there, the first few weeks are rough, it takes up to 6-12 weeks to full start showing the benefits. The more you talk about your side effects the less you worry about them.
On a funny note, weirdly sertraline has made my sex drive crazy, so my boyfriend isn’t complaining. Haha!
All my love to everyone, we can all get through this.
Xxxx
At least you are the one with good experience with sertraline. A lot people want to be free of symptoms in week and don’t allow medication to work. I’m at 25 mg for a week and I hope to work as I was on it for 6 months last year.

I know how u feel I took Zoloft 50mg yesterday for the first time it help me but I have to pee a lot
Hello, I've been on Sertraline 1 year now and almost done tapering off. Super happy with my therapy and drug results. In reading some of the side effects I never had like panic, nausea, headaches, or increase in depression & anxiety symptoms. I was taking 150mg which worked out very well at that dosage and now I'm tapering at 25mg. The only side effects that did not go away were the sleepiness and intimacy issues. Now that I'm almost done they are no longer issues at all, thankfully.
If I had some of the referenced side effects like nausea or increased symptoms I would have changed.
I’ve been on Zoloft for 3 months now after being at the worst of anxiety and depression for 4 months (over the summer) and at first I felt no change I felt the same sometimes worse but then again it could’ve been me overreacting and expecting big changes in the first couple of days but I am 3 months into it now and I feel amazing again! There were some side effects here and there but I would say that overall it has worked wonders for me! I do have a question tho. Has anybody experienced waking up early everyday no matter how late you go to bed? For example I’m an owl and go to sleep at 2am minimum but I’ll be up by 730 and just lose all sleep. But 2 hours later I get really really sleeepy and fall back asleep for another 2-3 hours. Is this a side effect anybody has experienced? Or any idea what this could be?
Hi Joanne. I was recently switched from Paxil after 13 years to 50mg of ZOLOFT. Today is day 7 and it’s awful. I had to work from home this week and today I even called off sick. I was curious how/if you are still managing to work. I’m so scared that next week it will be worse mentally. I’m scared I need to take time off work to get through this. But is that just my anxiety speaking? I seriously don’t know how I can possibly go to work with all these symptoms.
I just started sertraline about 3 days ago and I am having the worst insomnia ever! I am so exhausted and tired but everytime I close my eyes and start following asleep, I am jerked awake. I am taking them at night so I am going to try and take them in the morning to see if it helps. Any suggestion on how quickly I can overcome this side effect?
I have just been put on the 50mg tablets about 2 days ago, they already give me such restlessness I can’t sit still my stomach gets so unsettled and makes me feel so sick, They’re quite good though can’t go to work though feel stoned out my brains half of the time
"Some side effects of sertraline may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects."

"Side effects have been reported to be generally mild and transient. They are most common during the first 2 weeks of treatment and decrease in intensity and frequency with continued treatment. They generally do not lead to treatment cessation."
"Sleep, energy, or appetite may show some improvement within the first 1-2 weeks. Improvement in these physical symptoms can be an important early signal that the medication is working. Depressed mood, anxiety, and lack of interest in activities may need up to 6-8 weeks to fully improve."
I've been on sertraline for 3 days. Really bad stomach I've had. To resort taking them after I come. Back from work due to sitting on the loo for ages. Stomach pains last. Few hours then go feeling a bit. Sick as well don't help sticking. With. It. As. I've. Been told few days should clear up
I have had the worse stomach I have ever had on these , the side effects are bad . 1 week in .
I know this posted a while ago but I’d thought I’d share my experience, I started on 50mg of Sertraline and had all the side effects, nausea, diarrhoea, sensitivity to light, restlessness and insomnia. After 2 weeks the side affects subsideded but then my anxiety came back, I was then put on 100mg of Sertraline and went through the side affects for a second time. This time my insomnia was far worse, I was getting 2/3 hours sleep a night and my appetite disappeared. My anxiety started to creep back in as well, I went back to my doctor and asked for help, I didn’t want to go to 150 mg of sertraline in fear of the side affects again; I was however prescribed 7.5mg of mirtazapine; so my daily pills were 100mg of sertraline and 7.5mg of mirtazapine.
Instantly my sleeping got better and my appetite increased and the nausea disappeared, turns out mirtazapine is often given with sertraline as it counters the side affects of sertraline. Now I’m 6 months into my whole experience and about 40 days into the sertraline mirtazapine mix and I’ve never felt better. I still get the occasional bout of feeling sick but it’s managable, I sleep like a normal person and I eat the same amount of food as before my major anxiety breakdown. I still get a few bits of anxiety but that’s why I’m doing therapy as well as medication, it makes it easier to talk about things that have happened in the past. Anyone who is going through the sertraline blues, stick with it as long as you can get with doctors approval, it might take some time, but you will find something that works for you
I must ask my doctor about mirtazapine as my sleeping has been the exact same, glad you're feeling better
I started taking Sertraline a bit over 30 days for anxiety issues at 25 mg. After the first month I went up to 50mg. My patience is so much better and anger under control again. Feeling better with few side effects but can't get over the sleepiness. I think 50mgs is enough but wish I wasn't so sleepy during the day so i take it before bed now.
Been a long time since I was so positive and mood is great again!
