Mine have decreased from 7-12 episodes in 24 hrs to 1-3 in 24 hrs. PLUS the ones I have are of shorter duration & less intense. I've been taking the generic version of Zyrtec (has the same active ingredient) for 2 months. No side effects. I'm sleeping much better & never drench the sheet or my clothes anymore. I tried black cohash & other natural "remedies"- no relief. I had to stop taking Pristiq (antidepressant) due to the side effect: excessive sweating!! I was researching online when I found an article about a small clinical trial in 2003 using Zyrtec for hot flashes:
I decided to try it, my physician agreed & my pharmacist recommended using the generic version which really reduced the cost
Hot Flashes - Has anyone else tried Zyrtec or Claritin to decrease their number of flashes?

It’s working,thank you God! I am a husband!
Ive found it really interesting reading some of the experiences here. I suffered for about 3 yrs from terrible hot sweats, they got so bad I stopped going out as much as I could, I felt so self conscious as I actually used to drip. If I washed my hair it would never get completely dry. Then I stumbled upon antihistamines as a few people here have said they did. The effect was nothing short of miraculous. That was about 6-7 mths ago.
Unfortunately just in the last 3 weeks my sweats seem to have come back.l, not a bad but still bad enough to be causing problems again. We are having quite warm weather here in the UK at the moment and my improvement had happened in the winter months. I'm wondering, has anyone else found that Cetirizine only works for so long? Do you develop a immunity? Does the dose need to be increased with time or during hot weather? Lots of questions I know but I felt like I had found an escape from my daily hell and now I'm worried it was only a temporary escape after all
Thanks in advance
Jules
I have terrible night sweats that started a few months ago well its allergy season so I took a Claritin a week ago and was wondering wow that night I didn’t have night sweats but didn’t pay any mind to it, so I needed to take Claritin again and woke up today and was like wow wonder why I didn’t have night sweats and I remembered I took the Claritin and googled it and here I am. I’m going to keep trying it now. Crossing fingers.. :)
Oh my gosh. My allergies started acting up 2 days ago. Today took some Zyrtec and no hot flashes. Woohoo
I started taking Claratin for an allergic reaction and after about a week I realized I wasn't having hot flashes or night sweats anymore. I stopped taking the claritin and after about two weeks I started to get a few hot flashes again. The hot flashes stopped as soon as I started taking claritin again. Why don't doctors tell women about this easy, safe, and inexpensive cure?
I also got relief while taking zyrtec and claritin.
The downside - I got extremely drowsy with zyrtec. I had carb cravings and weight gain with claritin. That is what I experienced when taking either one of those, daily, especially during allergy season.
But I am glad to hear that it is working well for you.
I too after recently having a cold, noted my hot flashes greatly deminish while taking Claritin. It also help relieve the muscle and joint soreness . I tried Vitamin E which my Ob. physican recommended for three month with no relief. Tonight I decided to Google and see if anyone else have found relief with Claritin . Wow, never thought I would have been so grateful for a cold !
I have been taking Benadryl every night for allergies. It only lasts about 4-6 hours. I started to notice a correlation with not having hot flashes until the Benadryl wore off. I get them in the day, but they are quite disruptive to my sleep. I sleep great with no hot flashes until around three am and after. I decided to google it to see if there is a correlation and I found others have similar experiences. I am now going to try a long acting antihistimine to see if that works.
I had the same results. I feel normal like I'm back to my old self.
OMG I stumbled on the Hot Flashes cure by accident. I suffered just like you for a month. My doctor prescribed ZOLOFT??? Then I cleaned my house. Was sneezing like crazy. Took Zyrtec & went to bed. Woke up the next morning fully clothed in dry sheets for the first time in a month. My days are much better, usually 2 or 3 mild flashes. Best week of my life so I Googled to see if anyone else had similar results. We need to share this before another doctor prescribes Zoloft to someone who isn't depressed.
I got the generic for Claritin today, wish me luck. Has anyone had any luck w/Zyrtec & or Claritin?
No luck w/the generic Claritin. :,(
Thanks so much for this info. I sitting here wrapped in a towel after my latest "power surge". I'm willing to try anything. I'll report back, because it is important that we all support each other. For a natural process, it is so debilitating.
I hope it works for you too renniesmum. In the 2003 study I read about, 40% of women had a positive effect. The active ingredient in Zyrtec is citirizine & it is a bit stronger than the active ingredient in Claritin.
Can anyone tell me if you just take the recommended dose or is it a larger amount?
zyrtec or claritin here i come!lol if this works boy will i be a happy camper!!! because i won't take other meds for hot flashes due to risk of cancer!just been suffering with sweats!thanks for the tip!
God bless & best wishes
Best of luck Brenda. I hope your results are as positive as mine. I felt the difference in only two days! I really want women who are suffering from flashes to know about this option - that's why I posted the info.
it's worth a try !hot flashes are no fun!everyone else is cool and you're sweating like you're on fire !and others are wondering if you're ok because you are soaking wet !yeah i know that feeling!thanks !
