I got the Nexplanon inserted of July 13th, 2013 and about 3.5 weeks later I started my period, which was when it was supposed to on a normal cycle. But my period had now lasted six weeks and I'm wondering if its worth the wait to see if it'll stop, or if I should try a different birth control. This period is extremely light, it's like it's not even there, but it gets old after a while.
Nexplanon - I've been on my period for six weeks, what are my chances of it stopping anytime soon?

I got my nexplanon put in June of 2016. It's now January of 2018 and I'm planning on getting it removed. The first few months were fine, but then I started bleeding. It was like other commenters said, not too heavy but only stopping for like 3 days then starting again, up until about mid November 2018. Haven't had a period or spotting since. Even so, I'm not a fan of the hormones in my body for so long (having been on hormonal birth control for most of my menstruating life) and I'm very active yet have a hard time losing weight (which didn't used to be a problem). Planning on getting the hormone free IUD instead. I'm married and the constant period has taken it's toll. Looking forward to my body figuring itself out.
I just got the Nexplanon inserted on Dec. 16, 2017. I didn’t bleed at all as I had been on my period when I had it inserted. I ended my period around the 20th of December which was normal and then december 31st I started bleeding again. I’m extremely tired and having back pain. Can anyone reassure me of this? I don’t want to be bleeding or spotting constantly and for it to disrupt my sexual activity.
I have been on nexplanon for 2.5 yrs. first 6months light spotting, after long periods and big blood clots. Tried having it removed 2 tines at planned parenthood and they cut me couldn’t get it out claimed weight gain but finally told the truth person put it in wrong place. Contacted fda and no help. Going to a hospital to do X-ray and have it removed
I just got on the Nexplanon two weeks ago, an I have been on my period ever since. Getting it removed this Thursday. I was on it two years ago, in the beginning my period was only 4 days, towards the end, a WHOLE month. Think I would rather try a different type of birth control.
Hey I know this thread is old, but if you’re like me in 2017 having this problem, here’s how I fixed it! I went to my doctor & told her my symptoms, a long light period annoying as hell but sometimes barely even there. She told me to take Aleve (it has to be aleve!!) twice a day for 5-7 days. haven’t bled since two days ago. it works!
Aleve but how many milligrams?
I’ve been having similar issues. I got it the week of Thanksgiving 2016. Since then I’ve been getting my period every other month. The months that I have it, it lasts nearly 3 weeks!!!
I recently switched over to using a menstrual cup since my periods are so long. I’m ready have the Nexplanon removed. I’m at a loss for what else I use.
I can’t do the Nuva Ring ( which I absolutely loved, but my BP was sky high from it). I have a tilted uterus so they had difficulty attaching Mirena.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated v
Overall I love the implants. Irregular periods is about the only side effects and I was told that would very from person to person. And from reading all of these comments I see that is the case. Doing my research I've found numerous women who didn't get their periods at all except closer to the time it was about to expire. I got the Implanon after having my daughter. My periods got longer, went from 5 days to 7 to 8 days, and a few times almost two weeks, but it was extremely light, just spotting here and there. About mid way through, it slowly because like a normal period, by start off spotting, followed by a couple days of a moderate to heavy period, then back to spotting till it went away. After than expired, I got the Nxplanon next, which I'm currently one, my periods were exactly the same as the Implanon, except I didn't have a few months where it lasted almost two weeks, just about 7 to 8 days.
But now that I have entered into my last month before it expires, I have been having very light spotting almost 4 weeks now. I'm assuming its because its about to expire and it is weakening. So overall I love them both, the only negative is that it took my period from 5 days to 7 to 8, but those extra days are just light spotting. So I can't complain.
I first got the implant back in 2010 after I had my son and when it was implanon and I had no issues I had the normal period when it first was implanted then no period for 3 years until the very end when it needed to be replaced which I thought was normal because the hormones were weaker by then, when I got it replaced in 2012 it was nexplanon and I had no issues same normal cycle when it was replaced then period free up until the very end of the 3 years, I got it replaced october 2016 and I had a normal cycle then nothing until April of this year and it is now august and I haven't stopped bleeding.
I had blood work done and they found nothing wrong I wasn't anemic or anything but I was practically hemorrhaging bleeding through supers and pads within 45 minutes of changing them extremely weak and tired so my dr had me do two rounds of progesterone pills which I thought was weird because that's what nexplanon is but these pills pretty much put my period on overdrive to get my body to basically push it all out and after the second round i thought it worked the bleeding stopped and I was period free for a week and then I had a normal period after which they told me that would happen after I finished the pills well after that normal period my body went back to light spotting every single day up until I believe this past Monday it went into full blown period mode and it isn't even time for my normal period cycle and they just put me on another round of these progesterone pills again and I have no idea what to do because for literally 6 years I never had my period and now all of a sudden my 3rd time replacing the implant I've had my period every day for almost 4 months.
Hi, I had the same problem - I bled for over a month after getting my Nexplanon inserted, and it was terrible - but I managed to stop it myself by eating foods with high estrogen content, like soy, flax seeds, sesame seeds, beans, walnuts, olive oil, tempeh, bran, hummus, and dried fruit. If you think about it, this makes sense: Nexplanon is a progesterone-only method of birth control. It lacks the estrogen hormone that the Pill has, which regulates your periods. My period stopped within 3 days of eating these types of foods at every meal.
I also had a Planned Parenthood physician tell me you can stop it by taking ibuprofen in very high doses - three 200mg capsules three times a day for 6-7 days. I opted not to try this because I was worried about of the risk of heart-attack linked to ibuprofen, but it's an option.
*disclaimer, I'm not a medical professional, I'm just sharing what worked for me*
I did this too and it stopped!
But then I gave it up and eventually started bleeding again so irregularly so I went to the doctor and they gave me cerelle (I think that's the spelling) which is basically the same as the implant. I stopped bleeding after taking 2 pills and haven't since.
I just needed extra progesterone
Hi, I'm on my second implant now... first time I bled for 3 months before it stopped then had 3 years of no period. At the end of the 'term' (sorry don't know its official name) i was bleeding every 2 weeks for 4-7 days.
Then I got a new one put in the same day I had the old one removed. 2 weeks later, no period. So I thought it must be working. But no.
A month after the last period (3 weeks after the implant was fitted), another started and it's been 8 days, which is longer than usual, and it doesn't feel like it's gonna stop soon...
I forgot how annoying it was before. This is gonna be the longest 3 months of my life.
But just remember, don't give up on it straight away bcos it does usually settle down.
I'm glad I did wait out the 3 months before bcos it gave me 3 years of no periods and 100% contraception which was a blessing. It's only more frustrating now as I'm more sexually active and massively worrying about guys' opinions :( :(
I'm having the same problem, I had my 4th implant fitted in December 16, I've never had any problems with it at all. This one is totally different, since then I've had constant bleeding. I went to the walk in health centre who gave me a 3month course of Cerelle oral pill to take alongside to hopefully stop the bleeding and regulate everything. So far 1 week in and nothing has changed. Has anyone had this problem? How long was you taking it for until you noticed a change? It's driving me insane
Hi I have the nexplanon in am arm and I have come on my period
I have been on the nexplanon since June 2016. I have been having my cycle about 3-5 times a month. Being on 4-5 days and the off for 1-3. It's been horrible. I went to my family doctor. I am anemic. She prescribed sronix oral contraceptives, but it has not helped. I'm unsure what to do at this point other than schedule an appointment with my gyn and get it removed. Any help is appreciated.
I also have this problem! I believe I got my implant in April and for the first few months I had no period at all. Then by September the cycle was several months around 3-4 ish with nothing and around the 3/4 month I would have a period on my normal cycle day. Expect 99% of the time the period was just dry "old" blood. Which totally makes sense. But now since around Christmas I have been on my period and it's been insanely heavy! Like 2-3 supers a day! Very annoying everyday I hope it will be gone, but nonetheless it is still there. I love nexplanon besides a little weight gain it's so awesome! Really hoping this settles itself out as I've had it for just under a year and was finally getting used to it.
I'm on my second round. of the implant.. the first time round I was grand until the third year, then I would constantly bleed the same which I was given the pill to rectify it, this worked but as soon as I was off the pill for a month or so the bleeding came back... I got it replaced 2 summers ago. and had the same problems, it's really annoying me now as I'm not sure when or where it will come.. I've just come off 3 months of the pill and low and behold its come back 3 days later
got Nexplanon April 2015, and my period lasted till March 2016 when i finally had it removed. and i gained 20 pounds. told Doctor about it she didn't seem all that concerned about my long period, just said it was different for everyone, some women got periods, some didn't and some lasted a long time and some didnt. most miserable 11 months of my life!!!
***Got my period the day after i got the nexplanon put in my arm
i'm 16 years old and when i was 14 i had my period for three months straight and was eventually hospitalized, i was put on birth control pills for about a year until they started to make me vomit every time i took them. My doctors put me on a weaker prescription thinking that would help but those pills made my period continue for a month straight. This was when i got the Nexplanon. for the first month, i didn't bleed at all. Since then, i have bled every single day a regular amount. i've gotten an ultra sound, a pelvic exam, and over 20 blood tests and they haven't found anything abnormal yet. i've been back tommy doctors three times since i got my implant and every time they send me home telling me to 'wait it out' because it can take up to 6 months to work. It has now been 6.5 months and i'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for what i should try next.?
