I started Linzess in June and I have gained 17 lbs! Haven't gained that much since I graduated in 1984. Checked my thyroid, hormones and ruled out other conditions, so it has to be this medication. I now look like a python that ate a cow. As of reading this feedback from others in the same boat, I'll no longer take Linzess. The results I received are not good enough to outweigh the weight gain. Thanks to everyone for your input. My Pharmacist recommends that anyone having these issues contact the FDA and share with them.
Anyone doubled up on linzess? If so what was results.
This has all been helpful. My doc gave me some samples and I wanted to read reviews before taking them. I already suffer from weight gain due to thyroid and don't need any more help with that. I'll try to stay on the dieters tea and prune juice but the cramping is horrible... wish me luck in finding the right regimen of the 2 to live without cramps and without constipation. Any other ideas???
Don't let the weight gain possibility stop you. I have had abdominal pain every day since 2008. Linzess was a Godsend for me. Yes, it does cause watery diarrhea and I watch when I take it, but I am finally pain free for 98% of the time. I had to quit work early b/c of the constant pain. I take it every other day or every three days. Yeah, I had to buy bigger clothes, but to live without pain is totally worth it! I've tried the tea and prune juice... just a bandaid.
I have had IBS all my life and for the past few years I have taken Syomax and sublingual Hyoscyamine. Both meds have helped my symptoms, but my insurance will not pay for the Syomax and it is breaking the bank as a daily medication, so I decided to try Linzess. My doctor raved about it and my insurance covers most of the cost, so I was happy to give it a chance. So far, I am NOT happy and very concerned as well. I took it the first night and my stomach was very upset. The following day, I had the same effect as you would with a laxative. I continued to take it, and for the last four days, I have only had one bowel movement and I feel like I have swollen up like a balloon! This morning, I could not get my wedding ring on my finger - that has never happened before! I have that awful pressure/bloated feeling in my gut that happens when IBS really flairs.
I don't think this is right for me, and all the accounts of sudden weight gain are very troubling! Since I am feeling worse not better, I think I will return to the Symax. It's worth it!
Been on this med for almost a month. No weight gain or loss. However, I work out and maintain a mostly healthy diet not sure if I decreased my work outs if I would gain. I'm on the low dose and I still only go every 4-5 days. Better than I was but not great. If I miss a dose I hurt badly and my stomach cramps. I'm thinking of asking my Dr to up the dose. At this stage a little loose stool sounds welcoming! I tried Amitza about 5 years ago and it caused lots of problems.
I started to take linzess 4 months ago. I was diagnosed with ibs-c. My doctor had me trial the 290 mg and then the 145 mg. I am 5'2 and was 128 lbs. I take the 145 every other day and now weigh in at 133. I have stayed at that weight since only taking the pill every other day. If I tAke the pill everyday I look prego for sure. Now I look normal again!
I was diagnosed with IBS-C almost a year ago. My symptoms came on over night. One day I was fine the next I was so sick I could barely sit up straight. After going to the dr for weeks they sent me to a gastrointerologist. He deduced, after a colonoscopy, and lots of blood, work what I had. My dr also prescribed me linzess. At first it too worked great, then over time less effectively. I've tried amitiza and every over the counter laxative I could find. But over all linzess works the best. The side effects are annoying most of the time, and I do sometimes have trouble going even after taking the med but over all im better with it. Weight gain is something ive noticed is a side effect. I thought it was just me even though im on a high fiber diet and eat less than I probably should. I've tried to different diets, and pills but I'm stuck with the extra 10 pounds. My stomach is so bloated all the time, I don't just bloat in my stomach, I bloat every where.
I have never been able to go to the bathroom like regular people do. Not even as a kid. I thought Linzess would be the answer to my potty struggles. Granted, it does work fairly well, even though I do get diarrhea, and constipation if I don't go to the bathroom within a certain time frame. The thing is, I have been taking diet pills to lose 30lbs, and was pretty successful until I started this medication. I eat healthy foods and drink plenty of water; I have cut back on the amount I eat, too. I have Zumba class 4X's a week, and school + an internship Monday through Friday. I hardly even get the chance to eat at all, anymore!
So, why did I step on the scale today and find myself 6lbs heavier! How could I have GAINED weight? I figured it has to be this medication causing me to gain weight, since it is the only thing that has change in the past 3 weeks, so I looked online and I found this forum. This explains a lot and lets me know that I'm not alone in this revelation. What I would like to know is: why isn't this side effect listed? I swear I don't remember seeing it in the list of side effects. Now I just have to figure out if I'm willing to keep taking it, or if I go back to using a series of enemas, laxatives, and fiber supplements, again?! What a horrible thing to do to people who already struggle with IBS-C!
Hi MacArt,
I am in the same boat as you with the rapid weight gain and also asking myself is this wroth it? Just wondering if you are still on it/experienced anything else.
thanks! mary
Hi, marybeth25!
I finally quit taking Linzess in November. In the end I had gained 10 lbs total and couldn't stand to gain more. I recently found out I'm really anemic, and the dr put me on iron. Iron has had the oposite affect on my system then it has on other people's and i have been able to go at least 2X's a week without further interventions. I'm on the iron for 3 months, so we'll see what happens after, but for now, i haven't gained anymore weight, but I've only lost about half of what i gained with Linzess. I'm still bloated, but i feel better now than i did on the medication.
I have been on this medication for one month and I have gained five pounds. At first I couldn't figure it out, because weight gain wasn't a side effect. I work out and eat sensibly, so I was already losing weight, now I'm gaining.. The only thing that I was doing differently was taking this medication. So when I googled "does Linzess cause weight gain", it's nice to know this isn't just in my mind.
until I found out that so many others have the same side effect did not know why I was gaining so much weight.
I agree! I knew I had been eating normal with drinking lots of water, but still gained 10 lbs after being on this Med for just a month!
I was first given samples of this medication for chronic constipation due to IBS and medication (Cymbalta) side effects. I was given the impression then to take Linzess when I needed it (every other day or two - taking something is the only way I can go)so I did and it worked within 2-4 hours of taking it. Perfect, I thought. I could plan around work and other obligations to be near a bathroom. Since it worked well, the doctor have me a prescription and I began taking it according to the official directions of taking it in the morning on an empty stomach. Now I am on day four without a bowel movement. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything wrong with taking it later on the day and after I have eaten? I didn't have weight gain using it the way I had been using it and it was effective in getting me to go.
Yes, when I was first prescribed Linzess, according to the dr. I should have quick relief. By day 4, I hadn't gone yet at all and called the dr. Within a day or two of that, I finally went for the first time. But for me, it doesn't work on a "schedule" of any kind. I don't go daily, could be a couple days... and it could be any time of day. (but it isn't loose like a lot of people have) I haven't take it at any other time of day. I know I tried taking with all my other meds in the morning on an empty stomach and it didn't work as well. So I still take it separately, first. I definitely have weight gain and bloating. Hope I answered some of your questions. Good luck...
I have been on it for a little over 2 weeks now, the higher dose, and I have actually lost almost 10 lbs. I was suffering from horrible issues for over 6 years old, so since i was 19, and within a couple days of starting the meds my digestive track has never felt better. The constipation was causing my weight gain so this medication has helped. But like any other drug it does not work the same for everyone.
Linzess ? I am permanently off of that !! My gastro dr. told me no interactions with other meds I am taking for other body ailments BUT what the drug does itself is the problem. I was on it (145 mcg ) for about 2 months, but 2 weeks ago I was feeling "funny" -- hadn't taken my blood pressure like I used to (as long as it is relatively low my Internist wont put me on bp med) and it was so high I just about went into an anxiety attack.. Serious. Then the last month that I took Linzess, I had bad problems.. The cycle was poop a little bit all day, then constipation next couple of days--I have an awful constipation problem and was on amitiza for many years.
But also, I would have REAL problem urinating, my stomach swelled up like I was ready to have a baby--unbelievable and even obvious to my neighbor that I was suddenly so bloated in the stomach and in other places too, Plus I couldn't wear any clothes I was wearing before I started this drug.. That proved to me that it was water gain. Did not change an eating habits.. The bloating of the stomach isn't as bad now. My weight went back to where it was before starting Linzess. I have "stomach paresis" and am thinking that is part of the severe constipation. My lower GI has just slowed the motility movement also I think. Makes sense to me. Various suspects of the problem because I am not diabetic. Miserable time with that drug. Going to supplement store soon and try to "supplement my way to better GI health, anyway... SERIOUS !! Oh, my blood pressure is slowly
getting better too. I.have another Dr. appt in 4 weeks...
Try "amitiza" instead. I have been on it for over 2 months. It helps with constipation but I have had absolutely no weight gain at all. I just saw this on a commercial, there were many warnings, too many for my liking. Staying on Amitiza.
I already tried Amitiza for about 8 years.. I am on a good grade of Omega 3,6,9 in liquid form. Also got a very good soluble and insoluble fibre with probiotics and take stool softeners--every day at first, now each couple of days. This is working way better than either of those meds..
I have been on this medication now for about 5 - 6 weeks and I have also gained weight. I also would like to know if this is normal?
I have gained 8 pounds
I've been taking Linzess for about 5 months, and have actually lost about 5 pounds. I don't attribute the weight loss to the medication because I had been working on losing a few pounds.
However, I have experienced nearly constant diarrhea since taking Linzess. My Gastroenterologist suggested cutting the Miralax back to once or twice a week, which I have. I had my gall bladder removed on December 17th with no issues, but went back to the surgeon last week with pain in the mid to lower right side. He ordered another CT Scan with contrast and when I saw him on Thursday he said the doctor reading the scan suspected my appendix of causing the problem, so I'm on 10 days of Augmentin and go back to the surgeon next Monday for another CT Scan if necessary. Good Grief!
I been on Linzess for almost 2 months and I feel wonderful. I have notice that Iam not bloated like I normally am. There are 4 weeks in a month and I bloat for 2, bleed for 1 and the other month is a mystery. But this pill has been a "mircale pill" for me. I have been having problems since forever. Now as for the weight gain, I have not notice any. I think I may have lost a few pounds. I dont want to say it if because of the pill, but Iam loving it.
Well I haven't been on Linzee that long, but I'm glad to hear that there is somebody not having the bloating of the weight gain. I hope i dont get any of the " side effects". I am having the diarrhea but that's pretty good for me considering I've been having problems having a bowel movement since I was little. Now they finally just giving me something to take other than over-the-counter medicines and rx medicine let's see how this goes.
I have been on linzess 2 was and I don't seem to have any weight gain or any other symptoms,, I actually feel less bloated and I am able to go to the bathroom,,
I have been on it for several months & have gained 7lbs and counting. I'm often ill with GI issues nausea, bloating ect
My stomach is enlarged & I can't lose weight. Without it I have really bad IBSC & pain. Thinking about going off med. not sure what to do.
I've tried so many drugs. I heard about this new one, Linzess, and I was hoping this might be the answer. But after reading all of these reports, I really can't take more weight gain. It's interesting that so many people with IBS is having the same problem with weight gain. I hope the doctors figure it out soon.
