I gained 10 pounds the first week of taking Linzess. Had blood work done and Dr. Office called me and told me we Sodium levels had dropped so low that there was a concern for my health. Got rid of remaining bills, they were samples for one week, enough time to do damage.
Ive been on it since october and ive gained 20 lbs. I am seeing my GI tomorrow.
I have gained almost 10 lbs in the first month of taking Linzess and so bloated that my stomach looks like I am hiding a watermelon. This is not what anyone needs from a med. Tossing it out today and hoping I can loose the weight and watermelon before I get to the beach.
I was diagnosed with IBSC and Celiac two weeks ago. I’ve been on Linzess for two weeks now. I take it every other day, it only helped the first two doses, and I suddenly look 7 months pregnant.
I have been eating like a bird for almost a month, yet have gained 9 lbs in the 15 days that I’ve been taking this medication. My entire torso is bloated to where I can barely move. I’m stopping it and hoping there is an alternative.
Stop taking it now!! I took it for a month and gained 16 pounds! I’m still struggling to get the weight off and it’s been over 6 months
Thanks for information about weight gain. I thought I was going crazy. I have been on Linzess for 9 months and have gained 15lbs. I stopped eating pretty much but am still gaining weight. In getting off this diarrhea inducing, expensive med... thx again.
Yes yes yes I started on the 75 mcg and noticed lil bit bloating then I increased to 145 mcg major bloating and swollen abdomen I gained 6 pounds in a week
I’m super healthy eat good and exercise everyday I feel like a huge
I started taking Linzess in May. I've tried three different doses mostly causing loose stool, stomach cramps, gas and MAJOR bloating. I am very self conscious of my weight and eat a very healthy diet. I also exercise regularly, don't smoke and rarely drink. I am up about 8-10 lbs depending on the day, my clothes don't fit and I am just uncomfortable. Everyone just tells me I'm "crazy", but I know once my clothes don't fit there is an issue. My body fat has also gone up I believe do to retaining water. Mostly in the stomach area is where all the bloat sits so wearing pretty much other than sweatpants is a struggle. I am going to ask my doctor again about the weight gain because I have ruled out most other causes. My guess is the pills make you retain water and cause more inflammation. Plus the constant issue of never knowing how you will feel makes day to day life difficult. Almost worse than the reason I started Linzess!
I have been on Linzess for four years and I have gained 25 lb. ... don't know if that is it but I am taking myself off of it.
I start taking it tomorrow so not sure for this particular medication but I was part of a drug trial around 6 years ago for fda approval for this type of medication and gained 53 pounds and could not lose it until I stopped taking the medication. I ate salads for dinner with grilled chicken breast, cut out junk food and walked 2 miles on treadmill and nothing worked. Only reason I lost the weight (and stopped taking the medication) was I became ill, gastritis, and was sick for a month (the medicine did not cause gastritis, just unlucky/lucky? coincidence) I was so sick I lost 22 pounds in 24 days. After getting better I discontinued the medication and went down to my normal weight around 2 months later so I do believe this type of medicine may cause weight gain for some individuals. I'm willing to try Linzess for chronic constipation but if I start gaining weight again the doctor and I might look for other options. I've had 2 lumbar fusions and have chronic pain with sciatica and the extra weight will only increase it.
I've been on Linzess 2 years (!) now & im in the worst discomfort of my entire life of ibs-c.
Initial weight gain (7-10 lbs) stuck around tho I'm active, fit & consume tons of h20.
I started Linzess the same time as an unrelated other new med, the weight gain seemed a reasonable trade off as both meds were both extremely effective in the beginning.
When I started Linzess I hadn't had any release in 2 weeks, despite literal OD of dbl daily magnesium citrate combo'd with other OTC.
Lower dose was good at first, when it's response waivered my doc put me on the higher dose that remained greatly effective until recently.
Linzess was life changing for me at the start.
I endured the miserable bloating, extreme dehydration & looking 7 mo's pregnant, cos it was less agony, a great improvement actually, over my previous years of living with ibs-c. Those same symptoms & worse: sans Any Release, had already plagued decades of my daily life.
Over the past 2 months Linzess has stopped working for me. Adding multiple dose MiraLax to my routine, per my doc, had previously garnered success when the Linzess faultered me these 2 years.
But now, nothing. Even doubled my dose today in panic at my increased constipation bloating & pain.
It's been 3 weeks now since I've had any release, I'm in agony.
Kicker is my insurance suddenly & inexplicably dropped my providers for 2017. Unclear if I can see my specialist sans insurance... ugh.
Interesting to finally find this site today, that there are others experiencing the same side effects. I really hope there's another miracle med for my ibs-c.
Linzess really saved me for 2 years & I'm grateful for that.
I took Linzess for an entire month. The worst part is, I gained 16 pounds. 16 pounds!!! I was devistated. Worst of all, I didn't really experience any benefits. After a week of not taking it, I did have a few more movements than normal. But, other than that this medication is worthless.
I was SO angry at the doctor for not warning me that weight gain might be a side effect! I have a history of bulimia and anorexia, so to gain 16 pounds was devistating!
It has been 1 month since I stopped taking the med and I still have not lost the weight.
Angry is not even close to describing how I feel!

I've been dealing with IBS for over 30 years and have tried just about everything. I've been on Linzess for about 2 months for IBS-C. At first I felt it might be working but then came this horrible weight gain! 10 lbs in 2 months and my doctor acted like it was no big deal. Then came huge amounts of mucus in my stool - if you have never experienced this, let me tell you, it's disgusting. You feel like you might actually have a bowel movement and all that comes out is a pile of thick, gooey material - I thought my insides were shedding! I started doing some research on it because my doctor was of no help (fyi, this is the 3rd gastroenterologist I've been to!). I did find some forums discussing the mucus w/linzess and have found a ton of information about weight gain and the bloating. Good lord, I truly look 6 months pregnant sometimes. Clothes won't fit and it's all in my belly.
I just don't understand why the doctors won't address this and at least tell you. My doc said, and I quote, "Well you were too thin anyway." What?! I was 5'2", 105 lbs. Yes, I'm thin but I've always been this way. I don't need medicine to put weight on me. So frustrating and I'm tired of trying everything to help with this ibs. I'm so sorry for anyone that has to deal with it and some people just don't understand... bleh...
To all - the active ingredients in this medication comes from e. Coli strain, and yes, it will make you bloat like a goat. Not to say it won't make you poop, because it will, but just know that it's largely in part due to e. Coli component bringing excess fluid and secretions to the gut. Your bowels are supporting sending more fluid to your intestines, but it's not in a positive manner. Linzess 2ill make you poo, but plan on feeling bloat, even though studies show bloating was reduced. That is bloating post complete spontaneous bowel movement. But in prep for the next poo, you will continue feeling bloated because your gut is blowing up with fluid.
I have been on Linzess for 4 years. I've gained over 30 pounds and my stomach looks like I'm 9 months pregnant. I've recently started having shortness of breath and heart palpitations. I've thought I was dying. I am also experiencing fatigue and joint pain. I'm not sure if all of this is related to the medication. I skipped my pill this morning and must admit I'm breathing better. I will try to find another solution to the severe constipation.
Stop taking linzess imediately! It's no good!
I've been on this med for almost 3 months and I've lost weight. I went from 139-131 lbs. But my belly still looks bloated, just lost weight in all the wrong places.
I am T1D and have gastroparesis. Did well on Zelnorm- loved it - till I had a heart attack! Amitza was a no go/no success. Cytotec (Misoprostol) worked well until it didn't. Took a break from it and it started working again. Finally, after several off and on with the Cytotec I needed something that was consistent (for travel purposes). Linzess (290mg) worked for about 3 weeks inducing what I call my, "penguin poops" (go to your local zoo and watch their forceful liquid squirts- quite entertaining!). Then all the sudden it stopped working. Back to Cytotec with breaks when I take Mg citrate and Triphala. Now every Sunday if things are getting backed up I take both the Cytotec and Misooprostol and potty on! It never occured to me this might be the cause of my weight gain. I am a very athletic 5'8"/113 lbs. I quickly shot up to 118 (I figured it was menopause). Since stopping it (except for the rare Sunday) with no other changes I am at 115.
