How is Troxyca ER formulated to be abuse deterrent?

Official Answer by Drugs.com 30 Nov 2016

The Troxyca ER (oxycodone hydrochloride and naltrexone hydrochloride) capsules contain pellets of the opioid painkiller oxycodone with a naltrexone core that acts as an opioid antagonist.

If the medication is crushed, the naltrexone can block the oxycodone euphoric effects. The naltrexone remains intact unless the capsule is crushed and abused by swallowing or inhaled (snorted) via the intranasal route.

Pfizer's Troxyca ER is an abuse-deterrent formulation used for severe pain requiring daily, around-the-clock, long-term opioid treatment and for which other medications are inadequate.
