Hi. I have been taking gabapentin most of this year and have had increasing problems with my gums and teeth. Mostly gum recession, tooth loosening, bone support for teeth degrading. I have looked uop anti seizure meds, of which gaba is one, and discovered that all the above probs can be side effects of these meds. Is anyone else experiencing these symptoms?

I had beautiful teeth. Never a cavity until I was 19. I know once diagnosed with stuff I was taking other meds as well, but I was constantly on something for the nerve pain in my leg. They first chose pregabalin then it was gabbipenten. Unbelievable how fast my teeth deteriorated while continuing to see a dentist it was absurd. I first put $17,000 out of pocket into my mouth trying to save my own teeth in my mid to late 30's. I continually wad told dental work is expensive, but like that. I'm 42 with a full upper denture, and 7 teeth remaining on the bottom. I'm lucky a wire retainer holds them in together or I wouldn't have that many.
I am so happy to know it’s not just me. I do wish none of us had these problems, though.
I have RLS along with Psoriatic Arthritis. I was given Requip at first. I might as well been taking placebos. My rheumatologist then put me on around 2400mg/day of Gabapentin.
I’ve had so many dental issues. I’ve had root canals, cavities filled, a crown put on my top front tooth after the real one just kind of broke off, extreme dry mouth so bad to the point my dentist is researching ways it can be helped. I’ve also had several molars pulled (takes forever to chew up certain things), but at least people can’t see those missing teeth when I’m talking. As many other people have posted, my gums are receding.
My gums are so sensitive that I spit out blood when I’m done brushing my teeth. It’s not a pretty sight. I am in the process of weaning myself off the Gabapentin. I had already reduced my dose to 1800mg = 3 pills/day. I didn’t even notice a difference. After a week, I dropped it down to 1200mg = 2 pills/day. Next week I will drop it down to 1 pill/day and then remove it entirely after that. I still haven’t noticed a difference. This might just be in my head, but it seems like my mouth isn’t quite as dry as before. My dentist told me a lack saliva can wreak havoc on your teeth.
I was so astonished that other people were experiencing this same side effect. I will update my post if I find something that helps. I’d love to hear about other’s experiences and what worked/didn’t work.
Sorry for such a long post. I just had no idea other people were suffering from this side effect. I’m glad this helped me find the connection between Gabapentin and mouth issues.
I hope everyone has a good day!
I have been on Gabapentin several years now for anxiety. I’ve had weight gain and gum problems. My question is, how do you wean off of gabapentin? I take 400 mg 3 x daily
I've got an appointment with the doctor to change my meds this week! I take gabapentin for pain relief, they are also non addictive so weaning off them shouldn't be an issue! The only issue I will have is trying to replace them with a different strong pain relief that is not addictive, so I can continue to receive pain relief daily without becoming addicted to pharmaceutical drugs
From what I’ve read it is a med that has to be weaned off of.
Maybe that's because your taking them for anxiety? I suppose i will need to monitor myself and try not to let myself go into a panic etc... I take Propranolol for anxiety, they seem to work most of the time.
I hope you find a good replacement.
I've lost all my teeth and now I'm going through bone grafting to hold dentures. I'm down to taking only 2 Gabapentin 300mg per day. Soon will be down to taking no more. I've taking this medicine for over 15 years, as long as I've had BMS. This is the first time to say it's related to problem.. Thank you. Still waiting to heal and get dentures. But I still have this horrific pain from BMS. Guess there is nothing they can do to treat it of find the reason for having this horrible painful disease.
I've been on Gabapentin 300mg for 3 years.
My teeth have always been strong, but since i have been on these my teeth can wiggle. I've just lost one tooth, my 1st only last month.
The dentist thought i smoked with the damage caused, but i don't.
Please can you tell me if you have managed to make your teeth and gums strong again as I do not wish to lose anymore teeth :-(
Yes this drug is very bad for jaw bones and teeth falling out. I have been on it sense 2011 and have never had a cavity. This drug causes very painful jaw bone failure and the teeth fall out. I have pulled out at least 1 tooth a year sense taking this medication with nothing wrong with the teeth but they cause loosening and very painful jaw where the tooth come loose. I just recently quit taking it and the pain stops within 10 days. If anyone is on this get off them before you lose all your teeth. I know for a fact this drug is the problem.
yes, I have the same problem with my teeth, gums and lots of bone loss.. I've been on gabapentin for years. Guess I need to research this now too. The doctors don't know. I've had BMS for 13 years
.
yes I have the same problems . I've been on gabapentin for years. Never thought of it doing this to my teeth, gums and bone loss.
I just started taking Gabapentin for anxiety. Upon
reading all these posts regarding tooth and gum problems, I am terrified to take it. Any recent comments would be greatly appreciated
Yes. I 'm having the same problems. BOne loss, now my implants are receding and coming out. I
ve been taking gabapentin for many, many years. Good grief. . Is there anything that you can take for this pain???
Gabapentin brings on or worsens burning mouth syndrome for me.
I just started Gabapentin 300 mg my teeth are starting to come loose and my gums are starting to hurt
I just started gabapentin on may 4th, 100mg, 3 times a day. By week 2, i had an infection in my upper gum , inner cheek, rash on tongue and sore bottom gums. Dr thought it was just a viral infection, so gave me antibiotic for 10 days. Antibiotic did nothing. Went to dentist. He gave me mouth rinse. Did nothing. 10 days later, dentist gave me another antibiotic and advised to get off gabapentin. Nuerologist approved me going off gaba since he felt this was the culprit. Gums still sore after 1 week off gaba. Nuero said would take about 2 weeks to get gaba out of system. Glad i wasn't on gaba for very long. I did take a larger dose a few years ago but didn't have this side effect. I hope this fixes my teeth and gums issue. I am sick of seeing doctors to find out what the problem is.
My friend Wendy F. was on gabapentin and her back teeth loosened up one after another fell out no bleeding.she would reach into her mouth and take out back teeth. Now her dentest tells her that her bones that hold her teeth have receeded and all her top teeth cannot be saved.
Another person i know..Leah L... was taking gabapentin and she was having teeth problems as well as connective tissue to bone issues in all her joints.she was told by her doctor that she needed 2 knee replacements possible hip replacements and the loss of connective tissue throughout her body has made her bone to bone receed.she has been taking this drug over 10 years at a high dose. Also Fred R... while on gabapentin had gum recession and loss of teeth.
Hi auntiewinnie,
I just wanted to tell you that I have been on Gabapentin, 4800mg/day for the last 11 years. My father in law has been on that same dose for 8 years. Neither of us has had any gum pain or other unexplained pains. I consider Gabapentin to be a miracle drug for help to treat chronic pain of a neurological nature.
