I just had my first shot of Prolia 5 days ago and I have had neck, shoulder and arm pain on the side where I was given the injection. I am also exhausted from lack of sleep due to the constant ache. I am really concerned now after reading the other comments. Why are we all treated like guinea pigs? I see so many drugs advertised on TV and a couple of months later there are attorney ads saying they will help you sue the drug companies due to illness or death from using a particular drug. I have been using a heating pad and taking Advil about 3 times per day to try to make myself comfortable. If I was still working (I am retired), I would not feel well enough to go to work. I will be calling my doctor tomorrow to see if there is anything that can be done about these aches and pains from this drug. I will definitely not get the second shot which was due this coming Spring.
That sounds wise not to get any more shots. As I said below, I am taking estrogen which has little risk, but helps prevent more bone loss. Good luck. I will probably close this question, so if you need to contact me, you can do it privately or start another question.
Dear Ladies,
I am so sorry you have had all these problems with this drug. I have tried Forteo which was recommended by my endocrinologist and had an awful reaction after about 3 months. I have been a type I diabetic for 48 years, had parathyroid surgery in 2003, and of course my kidneys are slightly impaired. When my nephrologist heard that I had taken Forteo, he was not happy. When I asked him about Prolia he said it was not much different than the Forteo and I just need to be care full and not fall. It seems they have talked about my situation because I heard from my endocrinologist and she is ready to schedule me for the first Prolia injection. I should also say that it seems like every time I try a new medication I have other problems because of the new drug. I have been researching Prolia and have read the contra-indicators for taking this drug. Today my husband and I read your postings; we both now feel even more than before that this drug is not for me.
No matter what the doctors say. I can not thank you enough for sharing your miseries. I will keep you in prayer and ask Our Lord to ease your suffering.
I am so glad that you have thought better about taking Prolia. It does sound like a huge gamble for you. I think that you nephrologist's opinion that Prolia was not much better than Forteo, you should listen to. My mother had severe osteoporosis. She was very careful and never had a bone break. She died at 88 years. I do wear estrogen patches that help to keep the bones from deteriorating further. There is very little risk with them. It's not the horror story that was with the Premarin study years ago. I have stage 3 kidney failure. I do wish you the best. Sara
I have been receiving Prolia injections for several years with no incident. I do suffer from low sodium and potassium frequently, and I saw a nephrologist who said my kidneys were good. I have a second back surgery in November to extend the rod implanted in my back due to scoliosis. They had to be sure my bones were strong enough for the procedure, and the Prolia has improved my density.
You are one of the fortunate ones.
I started with the pill and within 24 hours had every side affect listed and ended up at urgent care. Next I had the Prolia shot December 2015 - no side affects. Unfortunately when I had the second shot in June 2016 within 24 hours I had every side affect and was back at urgent care. Since then I have had recurring affects which are painful and very debilitating- Drs cannot say how long and how often these symptoms will continue- I have since read a lot on this drug and wish I knew then the horrible affects it has had on people. I would have never had the shot but would have opted for a more natural way to combat the onset of osteoporosis - think twice - the sude affects are just too painful and debilitating.
I am so sorry to hear about your painful effects. What side effects are you experiencing? Hopefully they will go away before too long. Unfortunately my problems have lasted more than 4 years, but not as bad as what you seem to be suffering from. I do wear estrogen patches which have very little risk and help to stop the bone from deteriorating further. Also exercise, including weight bearing does help with bones. This question has gotten far too long, so I am going to close the question very soon. I would appreciate hearing from you, then I will close it.
I have been taking the Prolia injections for the last 3 years and I haven't noticed any bad side
effects. I had a bone scan a couple of months ago & was told my bones actually showed improvement in growth. As far as kidneys - I'm not sure they have any harm on kidneys, but I would say no, because I am at stage V kidney disease & none of my doctors have told me to stop it, but have instead told me to continue with it. . . at least until I receive a kidney donor. I hope this helped you a little.
Yes 02/04/2016 initial side effect was metal fast which lasted about 4 days after 2nd month started to get a rash and itching dermatologist is now trying a few things this had been going on for about 2 months and still have 7 weeks until the six months is up. I have never had anything related to skin issues before I suspect Prolia but am waiting for the dermatologist to confirm
Sorry to hear about your skin reaction. I sincerely hope that it goes away soon. I had my Prolia shot over 3.5 years ago and have had severe skin inflammation ever since. The skin reaction started about a month after the Prolia injection. Then it got better, but I still have the skin inflammation. Even touching my fingers on my face is irritating. Cannot wear my CPAP machine. Your doctor is not likely to be able to confirm that it is from the Prolia, but that doesn't mean that the injection didn't cause it. Also sorry I don't know what you meant by "metal fast", but would like to know.

I had recieved 2 injection of prolia as my doctor recommented for osteoporosis... After the second injection which was befor six months i had sever hip pain and frequent vertigo .. Diözese and lose of balance
My question is .. When this side effect will disappear ?
Is it lasting for ever or it will gone by time
Thx
Hopefully the ill effects will go away soon. I hate to tell you, but after just one Prolia injection, my devastating medical problems have lasted over 3 ½ years. Biggest medical mistake of my life. You don’t say how long ago it was that you had the Prolia injection. I would be interested to know how long ago it was and how much before the 6 months you had the second injection.
I had prolia ad i fe el great, everybody is different, for my alendronic ácid was horrible
You are fortunate. As you will see from other posts, people have had terrible effects after 2 , 5, or 7 injections. No problems initially.
So true. No side effects YET.
I have had Prolia shots every six months for 2 years. I have never had any problems except weight gain. After my second bone density scan my doctor prescribed me Atelvia. I just bought it and after reading the side effects I have decided that I will NOT take this pills once a week. I am going to call my doctor and ask him to put me back on prolia, since I didn't have any problems with it.
As you can see from most of the answers, many have had severe reactions from Prolia which can last for years. The answer below yours, (at least at this point in time) on May 19, 2014 reads, "I have had 2 shots of Prolia and am due for third, but I have recently found out that this drug stops the body's own bone production. Yes it supposedly strengthens bones, but with old bone cells, resulting in more dense but brittle bones that easily fracture. Also the side effects are legion." And the increases in bone production are minimal. So you might think again. I have now decided not to take any of these bone drugs. I took Fosamax for over 5 years and now have osteoporosis. So how much good did it do me? I wish you the best.
Also as you will see from other posts, people have had terrible effects after 2 , 5, or 7 injections. No problems initially.
I did 2 shots after months of suffering from the pills, Fosamax and Boniva, I didn't realize the aches and pains that I was dealing with had to do with Prolia or I would NEVER have gotten a second shot. My indigestion was horrible, I am bloated, my ankles are swollen, My muscles ache, I have eczema, never had that , I can't wear perfume, wore it my whole life. I have constipation. The list goes on and on. My whole quality of life has been affected. To make matters even worse Dr. who gave me the shot says nothing I am feeling is from the shot, When I had a physical with my GP he said he would have never given me this shot. I am almost up to being called to take a 3rd shot, the poor nurse who calls me to set up is not going to be too happy with me.
So very sorry for your problems. My problems have had major bad effects on my life. You need to file a MedWatch at the FDA website. It's important to let FDA know about your side effects. And that's the only way that the manufacturer may be forced to list the side effects in their literature. If the FDA gets similar complaints, then they pay attention.
Had my first Prolia short Feb. 4, 2016.
First week had metallic taste.
Start of third month rash on
Legs, back, arms and vary itchy
Presently going to a dermatologist to see
If related to Prolia
So far these are the only issues and the dermatologist gave me betamethasone dipropionate to help control the itch

Prolia is a dangerous drug! I had one injection 3 months ago and have a lot of bad side effects from it! I have severe pain in my neck, shoulders, arms, legs, and back. Also have jaw pain. It hurts to even chew. My CRP inflamation has doubled. I will never have another Prolia injection!
You darn right I've had bad side effects from my first, ("AND ONLY") injection of Prolia! It's been 3 months since getting it. My advice to you: "Don't put that poison in your body!" I was hoping it wouLd help my severe osteoporosis. Prolia weakens your immune system and can cause severe infections in your body and kidney infections. What it's done for me is make my whole body ache really bad, caused my hands to suddenly become numb and tingly to the point of inability to use. I can't write legibly anymore. My hands are weak and I have little control over their movement or direction. This bothers me tremendously, as I am an artist who paints on canvas. My back and neck are now stiff and painful, I can hardly bend my legs because they hurt so bad. My left jaw started hurting one month after taking this injection. Sometimes it's so sore, I can't chew my food.
Prolia can affect your jaw with infection and deformity, especially if you have any dental work done. It can make your teeth become loose. Last week, one of my perfectly good, front and healthy teeth broke half off. I just turned 66, but feel like 106! The annoying fact about Prolia is you can't stop taking it (like pills) because it's an injection that's in your body and lasts a long time, even past 6 months. I will not have a second injection!! These are not the only bad side effects either! Do some research and talk to your doctor. "I just PRAY I don't have permanent damage." I also pray this post will help you and others who may read it. Life can be hard. "God bless."
I'm so sorry to hear about your problems. My bad effects have lasted over 3 1/2 years now with severe skin inflammation which prevents me from wearing my CPAP mask for sleep apnea. And it caused bone pain from the slightest pressure on my bones. I will not take any bone meds ever again. They don't build back good quality bone and all of them have potential terrible effects. My mother had osteoporosis and died at age 89 without any bone breaks. She was careful. I hope to be like her.
Yes, unpleasant side effects. Swelling of face, extremities, abdomen, labored breathing. Stated slowly and steadily got worse. Being treated with benadryl and diuretics.
Never a problem with boniva. Won't use prolia again.
That is a wise decision. As you can see from this question plus other questions, people have had a lot of terrible problems from Prolia. If you care, you could file your symptoms with the FDA. That's the only way to get the manufacturer to have to publish the bad effects and to get the FDA's attention to this horrible drug. If you go to their website, click on drugs, then Medwatch.
I've been on Prolia two full years. The first year my T-score for spine went from -3.3 to -2.7, hips maintained at 1.6. The second year T-score for spine registered 2.6 and hips, 1.5.
I have had no side effects other than feeling more strength in my spine for exercise and posture. It's phenomenal.
Good for you, but as you know Prolia does not give you bone like your own. Most people do not have bad reactions, but as you can see above, there are many of us who were not so fortunate and have crippling bad effects from Prolia. I hope that your good fortune continues. There are others on this website who only had the bad reaction after multiple injections. In the one case if was after 5 injections.
boniva, fosamax, osteoporosis, renal failure, side effect, injection, prolia
