Applies to emedastine ophthalmic: ophthalmic solution

Along with its needed effects, emedastine ophthalmic (the active ingredient contained in Emadine) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur while taking emedastine ophthalmic:

Less Common

  • Abnormal dreams
  • blurred vision or other change in vision
  • eye redness, irritation, or pain
  • tearing, discomfort, or other eye irritation not present before therapy or becoming worse during therapy
  • weakness

Some side effects of emedastine ophthalmic may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

  • burning or stinging of the eye
  • dry eye
  • feeling of something in the eye
  • itching
  • skin rash
  • stuffy or runny nose

The most common side effect reported was headache.[Ref]

Ocular

Common: Eye pain, eye pruritus, conjunctival hyperemia

Uncommon: Corneal infiltrates, corneal staining, blurred vision, eye irritation, dry eye, foreign body sensation in eyes, increased tearing, asthenopia, ocular hyperemia

Frequency not reported: Discomfort, keratitis[Ref]

Nervous system

Very Common: Headache (11%)

Uncommon: Sinus headache, dysgeusia[Ref]

Hypersensitivity

Uncommon: Rash[Ref]

Dermatologic
