Serious side effects of edaravone

Along with its needed effects, edaravone may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking edaravone:

More common

• blistering, crusting, irritation, itching, or reddening of the skin
• blue lips, fingernails, or skin
• confusion
• difficult or trouble breathing
• dizziness
• fast heartbeat
• headache
• irregular, fast or slow, or shallow breathing
• swelling
• trouble in walking
• unusual bruising
• weakness

Less common

• itching in the genital or other skin areas
• scaling
• sugar in the urine

Incidence not known

• chest tightness
• cough
• difficulty swallowing
• puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
• skin itching, rash, or redness
• swelling of the face, throat, or tongue
• unusual tiredness or weakness

General

The most common adverse reactions are contusion, gait disturbance, and headache.^[Ref]

Dermatologic

• Very common (10% or more): Contusion (up to 15%)
• Common (1% to 10%): Dermatitis, eczema, tinea infection, rash, erythema^[Ref]

Gastrointestinal

• Common (1% to 10%): Nausea^[Ref]

Hypersensitivity

• Postmarketing reports: Hypersensitivity reactions, anaphylaxis^[Ref]

Musculoskeletal

• Common (1% to 10%): Ligament sprain^[Ref]

Nervous system

• Very common (10% or more): Gait disturbance (up to 13%), headache (up to 10%)^[Ref]

Other

• Common (1% to 10%): Excoriation^[Ref]

Renal

• Common (1% to 10%): Glycosuria^[Ref]

Respiratory

• Common (1% to 10%): Respiratory failure/respiratory disorder/hypoxia, upper respiratory tract inflammation, upper respiratory tract infection^[Ref]
