What is tenapanor?

Tenapanor is used in adults to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation.

Tenapanor is also used to lower phosphorus levels in the blood in adults with kidney disease who are on dialysis and have taken phosphate binders that did not work or who cannot take them.

Tenapanor may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

You should not use tenapanor if you have:

How should I take tenapanor?

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed.

Tenapanor is taken by mouth twice a day.

Tenapanor should be taken immediately before breakfast or first meal of the day and immediately before dinner.

If you have kidney disease and are on dialysis, do not take this medicine right before your dialysis.

Store this medicine tightly closed in the original container at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Do not remove the canister of moisture-absorbing preservative from the original container.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses at one time.

What should I avoid while taking tenapanor?

Do not use stool softeners or laxatives with tenapanor, unless your doctor has told you to.

Other drugs may affect tenapanor, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your doctor about all other medicines you use.
