What dosage of lysine is best for herpes outbreaks?
Medically reviewed by Drugs.com. Last updated on April 7, 2025.
I am just starting to take l-lysine as a friend suggested it. I am two weeks into shingles, started getting two cold sores and a terrible sty on the one eyelid. I am thinking I could use this tablet more than once a day on a regular basis?
There have been various studies that link cold sore and lysine treatment. These studies have claimed that lysine helps in healing and preventing cold sores.
The recommended daily dose for prevention is between 1500-3000mg.
If you feel an outbreak coming on, you will want to increase your dosage to 3000 mg. Continue this dosage until scabbing occurs. Even though using lysine for cold sores can make a difference, it does take some time to find out what dosage will work for you.

While these treatments can significantly speed up healing and reduce symptom severity, there is no instant cure for cold sores; even the best therapies only shorten the outbreak by a day or two.
