Applies to: rifabutin, Viramune XR (nevirapine)
Rifabutin may modestly reduce plasma concentrations of nevirapine (by 16%). The mechanism is induction of CYP450 3A4 hepatic metabolism. Data are insufficient to determine the clinical significance or whether dosage adjustments are necessary. The manufacturer recommends that these drugs should be used in combination with caution and only if clearly indicated. Patients should be monitored for altered therapeutic effect.
