Charcoal (applies to Norit) gastrointestinal obstruction

Major Potential Hazard, Moderate plausibility.

Charcoal (with or without sorbitol) should not be used in the presence of a stomach or intestinal obstruction or absence of active bowel sounds. Delayed GI transit time or constipation can result in failure to excrete a drug- charcoal complex and may result in increased toxicity.

Major Potential Hazard, Moderate plausibility. Applicable conditions: Altered Consciousness

Charcoal should not be administered in poison victims that are unconscious or having convulsions.
