For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "I've had IBS-D for 25 years. I was always told there was nothing the medical community could do about it. So I suffered through it and took lots of Imodium. So when I saw advertisements for Xifaxan, I was so hopeful. I saw a new GI doc, and he immediately told me that this med was the best hope for IBS and that its effectiveness was terrific. So I was so very, very hopeful this would work, and it did, for the 14 days I was on it. The day after stopping my 14-day regimen, my extreme bloating was back, and within a week, my symptoms were exactly as before. Now, after 6 weeks, my symptoms seem even worse. Going back to the doc in 6 weeks. Will see what else might help. Good luck to all of you! It's a terrible disease to have to deal with!"

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "This is my third time taking Xifaxan. The first two times were 200 mg 3 times a day, 6 tablets per day for 10 days for SIBO. Just started 550 mg 3 times a day for 14 days. The cost is prohibitive: $331 copay. So far, I am not feeling much relief from abdominal pain. I was not retested for SIBO but prescribed this for IBS. I am also on a gluten-free and FODMAP diet. I have low IgA and IgG immunoglobulins. Everything seems to be just trial and error. I will continue to take it. Not very hopeful. Everything gets blamed on low immunoglobulins."

For Crohn's Disease "Xifaxan was the only medicine that was able to get me off steroids and into remission with my Crohn's disease. I had been on steroids for 2 years and had 2 surgeries for blockages. I took a two-week course of this, and within 3 days, I was having normal bowel movements. Pain-free after a week. Six months later, I had another attack, took Xifaxan again with same results. In remission now for 3 years."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "This was given to me for SIBO (I've suffered from irritable bowel syndrome for years). I took it 3x/day for 14 days. Although I had no side effects from this medicine, it did not help with resolving my SIBO. I even did another test for SIBO after I took the antibiotics, and there was absolutely no change. Also, luckily my insurance covered it, so it was $70, but without insurance, it's around $900!"

For Hepatic Encephalopathy "My HE (hepatic encephalopathy) did a 180-degree change on Xifaxan. Better mentally, peaceful, actually. My wife and my friends noticed the improvement in me after 2 weeks on 550 mg, twice a day. Still take lactulose because cirrhosis is stage 4."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "I’m on round two of taking Xifaxan, a two-week, 550 mg 3x daily regimen. It is for SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). My insurance, thankfully, paid for it both times. The first round, I was symptom-free for the entire two weeks. Two days after finishing, my stomach pain and excessive gas returned. So I asked for another round. I’m one week into the second round, and it is a godsend for my stomach symptoms. However, I think it has messed with my menstrual cycle, as I am bleeding in between periods since I started taking this. It has also caused a yeast infection BOTH rounds. Other than that, it was extremely effective for the stomach issues. I just hope it killed the SIBO off! I don’t think my insurance will cover it a third time! It was $2,400.99!"

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "It started to work during the two weeks I was on it. I was still going to the bathroom, but it wasn't that awful urgent, you better go now or have an accident. Those two weeks were much better. However, once it was over, I have been worse than I was even before the medicine. Now I have severe stomach pain, foul-smelling gas and stool, I'm very bloated, and when I get the feeling I need the bathroom, I need to find one fast because it WILL come out no matter if I'm in the bathroom or not. I really had very high hopes that this would be just what I needed to help. I've had IBS-D all my life, but it was diagnosed years ago when I was 16."

For Hepatic Encephalopathy "I have end-stage liver and could not use the bathroom for a bowel motion unless I took a bunch of lactulose to go, and when I did, it was crazy, I pooped my brains out. But I was having a problem because it would make me a prisoner in my home. Then I tried Xifaxan and after taking it for three days, no result, fourth day, bingo, and I stayed using it, and it was more tolerable than lactose. So I feel much better. So I go to my gastroenterologist and told him it worked great, but I now have heart failure-'not good.'"

For Diarrhea "I wish Xifaxan wasn't so expensive because it has changed my life. I noticed a huge change in the range of foods that I could eat, and the level of chronic pain and diarrhea I was having after taking a full course (which left me broke)."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "Tested positive for SIBO. I had asked my GI doc for that test. Was happy to have an answer after years of suffering. I am also hypoglycemic, so the actual test for SIBO had my blood sugar super low... probably 2 days to recover from that! The first 2 days on the drug, I have felt dizzy and tired, and my arms super tingly (?). But the BMs improved immediately, so I didn't want to stop the Xifaxan. Now at 4 days, I'm not sure. Sometimes I start feeling amazing. I am also following a diet for candida and paying close attention to food combining. Just today, I started feeling the abdominal cramping come back! Really not sure what to do here...."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "I do not recommend this drug at all! I have had IBS for 6 years. This drug made my diarrhea worse! I had great hopes that this drug was going to give me some relief, not so. I do believe that an antibiotic will one day cure this problem. I was given a common antibiotic for a sinus infection on two different occasions, which not only cured my sinuses but also stopped the diarrhea for months. This drug is not the cure, not to mention the fact that this drug costs nearly $2000.00. Please do not assume that I am complaining due to cost, this drug cost me 25.00, my insurance company was the one who paid. I would suggest to this drug company, go back to the drawing board!"

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "I have had IBS-D for the past 8 years and am able to manage it with a regular regimen of Xifaxan for the past several years. Every 6 weeks, I go on a 10-day regimen of Xifaxan, and yes, it does get worse when I'm not on it. But I can control the diarrhea and somewhat the bloating. The bloating gets worse with my diet. So watching gas-producing foods is a must."

For Crohn's Disease "It took a few days for it to start working. I'm taking 2 pills a day. The first few days felt bad cramps, but after that, it felt like a complete cure. No bathroom trips, gained weight, I can eat anything without feeling bloated."

For Traveler's Diarrhea "Returned from a trip to Kenya, Africa, and brought back an unexpected guest, which caused my diarrhea for two weeks. Tried the usual antibiotic regimen along with Questran, neither of which worked with total success. Tried Xifaxan in combination with probiotics, and the cure was virtually overnight. I will definitely remember this and refer it to anyone I know with a similar problem."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "I’ve had IBS-D for as long as I can remember. Finally cracked and went to a doctor. After 2 months of blood work, CT scans, and a colonoscopy, they didn’t find anything wrong. I was depressed hearing, 'we don’t know what’s wrong.' The doctor calls me one day and says he wants me to try a drug - I’d do anything at this point for relief. In comes Xifaxan. I had really bad nausea the first day for about an hour, then nothing after that. After day three, I didn’t have any pain, bloating, or mad dashes to a restroom to unload. I was having normal one-a-day bowel movements with 'ghost' wipes. It lasted about a month and a half, and the symptoms are starting to reappear. I have a prescription for 3 treatments, so I’m going to go at it again and see what happens."

For Hepatic Encephalopathy "I am Stage 4 cirrhosis, diagnosed with hepatic encephalopathy. Started Xifaxan about a week ago. I was concerned with a few comments from a different doc about this medication. I'm glad I found this site because I feel so much better, reader, about your experiences. I am so looking forward to feeling better!"

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "I took this drug for my IBS-C. While I was on it, it did help with my pains but not my bloating after I ate. It actually made me more constipated than before. Just a week after my last pill, I can't eat anything without having pain and a swollen stomach, including gluten-free. Just a way for the doctors to get a kickback or a percentage! Sad world that we are living in."

For Diarrhea "I have been battling diarrhea for over 10 years. My GI doctor prescribed Asacol, VSL#3, and Xifaxan. I took all in combination and had almost instant relief. Then I stopped taking the prescribed drugs for 6 weeks, and the symptoms started to return. I resumed taking VSL#3 and Asacol with mediocre results. I then added Xifaxan, and my bowel movements returned to normal. I wonder how long and how frequently I will have to take this drug before I am permanently cured of this condition."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "Sadly, this medication gave no relief at all and actually made things worse... Severe nausea and vomiting on top of constant diarrhea, not an easy thing to multitask if you know what I mean. But hey, all meds work differently for different people. Hope others had better luck than I did."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "Do not take this drug! It made my symptoms of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) ten times worse. Before taking the drug, I had very mild symptoms, just some light feelings of hunger after eating. Now, six days after finishing a two-week course, I’m doubled over in pain, severely constipated, severely depressed, unable to sleep, and in a constant state of emergency. I’m worried that now I have IBS. Please do not take this drug."

For Hepatic Encephalopathy "I just received my first bottle. I put Lactulose on my drug allergies list! I have alcoholic cirrhosis. Quit drinking 4 years ago. My liver and portal vein are permanently damaged, but I am thankful my condition has stabilized! I still have toxic ammonia levels. I have been in a 'mental fog' for years. Forgetful, mentally confused, poor motor skills, disorientation (doesn't help I have bad vertigo too), you name it. I didn't know what it was from. Thought I was getting dementia, I'm 63. NOW I KNOW WHAT WAS CAUSING IT: hepatic encephalopathy or HE. I only have Medicare Advantage, and the co-pay was $840 a month! Couldn't afford it. My GI doc applied me for the Bosch Assistance Program. I was APPROVED and received my first FREE bottle of Xifaxan 550 mg today. I am SO GRATEFUL! Cannot WAIT to see if this fog lifts. Wish me luck."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "After years and years of dealing with IBS, my purse stocked with every kind of OTC stomach medicine to sort of control symptoms, my family doctor asked me if I wanted to try this. What a relief it was! I took 3 pills each day for 14 days, had very few side effects, mainly dry mouth. But I finished my round about a week and a half ago, and still symptom free! Not constantly worrying about what I eat, will it make me sick, where's the bathroom and is someone else in there? It has been such a relief to me. I hope the results last a long time. But the doctor has assured me that I can repeat it 2 more times in a year. So that brings hope to me, after all of my life worrying how to help my stomach problems. I will definitely repeat it if I need to. The outcome is definitely worth it!"

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "Thanks to my doctor for prescribing Xifaxan. I've only been on it for about a week, and my life has changed dramatically. It's so good not to have to head to the bathroom three or more times a day with diarrhea. The only side effect is some constipation, but you go when you want, and usually only once. No more what-if scenarios. I also have a better appetite and am gaining some weight back. Thanks, Doc and Xifaxan."

For Hepatic Encephalopathy "$1,375 with insurance and insurance won't cover but $12.50. Highway robbery and not worth it, in my opinion. Will try and fix some other way. Drug companies should be ashamed, and BC/BS should be abolished. You all high and mighty CEOs need to think about the patients."
