Rifaximin for Hepatic Encephalopathy "I just received my first bottle. I put Lactulose on my drug allergies list! I have alcoholic cirrhosis. Quit drinking 4 years ago. My liver and portal vein are permanently damaged, but I am thankful my condition has stabilized! I still have toxic ammonia levels. I have been in a 'mental fog' for years. Forgetful, mentally confused, poor motor skills, disorientation (doesn't help I have bad vertigo too), you name it. I didn't know what it was from. Thought I was getting dementia, I'm 63. NOW I KNOW WHAT WAS CAUSING IT: hepatic encephalopathy or HE. I only have Medicare Advantage, and the co-pay was $840 a month! Couldn't afford it. My GI doc applied me for the Bosch Assistance Program. I was APPROVED and received my first FREE bottle of Xifaxan 550 mg today. I am SO GRATEFUL! Cannot WAIT to see if this fog lifts. Wish me luck."

Rifaximin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "I had IBS and explosive bowel movements at any time. Spent $422.00 for this medicine in the hopes it would solve my problems. It did not. Took the recommended dosage till the prescription was complete."

Rifaximin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "After years and years of dealing with IBS, my purse stocked with every kind of OTC stomach medicine to sort of control symptoms, my family doctor asked me if I wanted to try this. What a relief it was! I took 3 pills each day for 14 days, had very few side effects, mainly dry mouth. But I finished my round about a week and a half ago, and still symptom free! Not constantly worrying about what I eat, will it make me sick, where's the bathroom and is someone else in there? It has been such a relief to me. I hope the results last a long time. But the doctor has assured me that I can repeat it 2 more times in a year. So that brings hope to me, after all of my life worrying how to help my stomach problems. I will definitely repeat it if I need to. The outcome is definitely worth it!"

Rifaximin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "Thanks to my doctor for prescribing Xifaxan. I've only been on it for about a week, and my life has changed dramatically. It's so good not to have to head to the bathroom three or more times a day with diarrhea. The only side effect is some constipation, but you go when you want, and usually only once. No more what-if scenarios. I also have a better appetite and am gaining some weight back. Thanks, Doc and Xifaxan."

Rifaximin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "This medication severely impacted my physical and mental health. I was prescribed for SIBO (though I did not have diarrhea - only persistent, very mild bloating and increased flatulence at the time). Almost immediately after finishing the ten-day course, my GI issues erupted like a volcano. About two weeks after, I had already lost ten pounds, was experiencing pins and needle sensations in my skin, developed what I now recognize as clinical depression (brain fog, inability to concentrate, no appetite, etc.), and about three weeks after, my hair started falling out. Soon after, I started having panic attacks out of nowhere, with no preexisting mental health issues in myself or my immediate family, and SEVERE constipation that sent me to the ER. For a year after, I was lucky to have one bowel movement a week. Read EVERY adverse event/side effect report on this medication. My life has two chapters: before Xifaxan, and after."

Rifaximin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "I was prescribed this drug for SIBO! I was bloating and have gas issues to the extreme prior to Xifaxan. The gas is gone, but I now look 10 months pregnant (overdue). I seriously feel I am at week 42 in pregnancy with a 10 lb baby. Severe bloating and extreme water retention when on Xifaxan! Feel awful, although the gas has definitely decreased."

Rifaximin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "I had to stop this Xifaxan after 9 days because it was making my IBS-D even worse. Two days later, and I'm still terrible. This drug is not worth the gamble when the best you can hope for is 'up to 6 months of relief.'"

Rifaximin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "I started taking Xifaxan for suspected IBS and started having severe abdominal cramping within a few days. I called my doc six days in and told him I was in severe pain and had a low-grade fever, and he told me it’s normal to finish the 14-day course of treatment. I have suffered severe lower abdominal cramping. This is so bad I can’t stay silent when it happens, moaning and crying like a drama queen!"

Rifaximin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "I paid $750 for 42 pills. The coupons only work if you have no insurance and are dead broke. I took the 550 mg three times a day for 3 weeks. I had only minor improvement. This drug company should be ashamed. Totally outrageous."

Rifaximin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "I was put on Xifaxan three times a day for 14 days for post C. diff IBS-D. I am very sensitive to antibiotics and actually did not experience an allergy or horrible side effects, which is why I didn't rate it any lower. It was pretty tolerable to take. BUT it did not help my IBS-D; in fact, I now experience horrible urgency with IBS-D. And my lower belly has been horribly bloated since taking Xifaxan, and it has been a good month since finishing it. I literally look pregnant and am having a hard time fitting in my clothes. It is not as bad in the morning, but as soon as I eat, I am back to being extremely bloated. I assume it is colitis but haven't been back to my GI to confirm. I will post again on an update."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I have been suffering for years with upper abdominal pain severe, so bad once I went to the ER. They came up with slow motility, along with my GI doctor ordering the test. Breath tests for H. pylori - negative. Endoscopies showed gastritis. Went gluten-free, this helped tremendously, but then recently an attack of the abdominal pain, shooting to the left side, severe bloating, hard to have a BM. My GI doctor said let's try Xifaxan 550 mg three times a day for two weeks. Within my second dose, I feel much better! I hope this continues. The drug is expensive, but go on the Xifaxan site to download your coupon, it should cost less depending on your insurance. I hope we can all get relief from this little wonder!"

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I took this drug, rifaximin, for 14 days in Sept 2018 and Sept 2019. Both times, it immediately started to relieve symptoms. In July 2019, the symptoms returned. I had chronic diarrhea for three weeks before starting a second dose in Sept 2019. Now, it is Jan 2021, and I have no more constipation and diarrhea. I can also eat beans again. After years of IBSD symptoms, I finally feel normal again."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "After suffering with IBS-D for a year and a half, was about to give up on any relief. A colonoscopy and subsequent samples and biopsies also showed no results. Yet, from the first thing in the morning, all day, and into the night, I could never be sure when I would have to run to the bathroom. Finally, my doctor prescribed Xifaxan. Because it was prohibitively expensive, I put off getting it because the cost for a 14-day treatment was equivalent to almost the total monthly amount I get from Social Security. Finally, I was able to obtain the medication through the manufacturer’s patient assistance program. I cannot tell you what a difference this medication has made. I can go about daily activities without worry. The audible stomach rumblings have ceased, and the flatulence is gone. When you read about IBS-D, they say the only real side effect is the stress and psychological effects. More true words have never been spoken. I have my life back and I am so grateful."

Rifaximin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "I requested this medication from my GP after a long history of IBS-D and a recent diagnosis of lymphocytic colitis. I was symptom-free within 10 days, with a mild relapse occurring 12 weeks later. The relapse resolved with rest and dietary changes within 4 weeks. I had suffered from moderate to severe colitis for 6 months prior to being treated with Xifaxan. I would not hesitate to use it again if necessary."

Rifaximin for Diarrhea "I have had a weight loss surgery called Duodenal Switch, which requires antibiotics periodically for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Xifaxan is the only thing that works for me for months until another flare. I thank God my GI prescribed it."

Rifaximin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "I have IBS-mostly D and lots and lots of lower abdominal cramping that I can't get under control. My Dr. prescribed this for me to help control the cramping. It seemed to work for the first few days, and then BAM! Stomach pain, and sharp shooting pains in my rectum and lower abdomen! So I stopped taking it. Also, my frequency to the bathroom did not change, nor did the D."

Rifaximin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "So far, this is great! Did experience a queasy stomach the first few days, but now all is good. But not a cure-all. If you have other food intolerances, this will not correct those. I am still mindful of what I eat. No sodas, greasy foods, milk (I use almond), or chocolate. These items cause me trouble regardless. I think this will work for me, at least I can eat without looking for the nearest bathroom."

Rifaximin for Crohn's Disease "I only just learned of Xifaxan after my 3.5-year remission streak ended with a brutal flare. Desperately longing only for some pred, I was instead prescribed Xifaxan 550 mg bid. But any disappointment faded on day 2 when I noticed it lowering the inflammation. Now I'm on day 5 and I'm impressed with this stuff. Pain is 80-90% lower and now eating normal meals without incident. I was on Flagyl for years, but it never quieted a flare like Xifaxan is doing now. I may be able to tell prednisone goodbye forever."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I was able to get rifaximin (twice a day for 10 days) in samples from my gastroenterologist. He tried to prescribe it about a year ago, and even with all months of back and forth with my insurance (Medicare and Tricare for Life), they refused the prescription. Because I do not have commercial insurance, I don't qualify for the voucher coupon from the manufacturer. Within 24 hours, I could tell a positive difference. I had no negative side effects; a surprising plus for me as I have a lot of allergies to meds (Rx and OTC). After years of pain, discomfort, and a lot of daily inconvenience of both IBS-D and C, I have my life back! For me, the success of this antibiotic on my gut is somewhere around 90%. Oh my, this is an amazing drug, and I am so thankful! I've read it might only work for up to 10 weeks; I am not looking forward to regression, but I'm not going to worry about it. Right now, I'm enjoying leaving the house when I want without worries and not having pain, bloating, or anything!"

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I am a mother of a young adult female. Over a year ago, my daughter was healthy but took the Depo Vera shot to help her with her period. First Depo shot-an allergic reaction, the GI issues started and became a health nightmare. As a mother, I took my daughter to every doctor imaginable for non-narcotic meds, tried every diet, and Googled every review-no relief for almost 2 years. As her mother, I felt helpless. My daughter was in chronic pain and sickness. Until a day ago, 7/5/2017, this expensive drug (shame on your creators) was prescribed ...a miracle. Last night, my daughter slept like a baby for the first time in 2 years."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I was diagnosed with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), predominately methane gas producing (constipation/bloat mostly). This means a lot of archaea (not a bacteria, so Xifaxin doesn't treat it, but I was still advised to take Xifaxin, 550, 3x/day, 14 days). My bloating and flatulence got progressively worse, tolerable but worse. I kept SIBO active by eating plenty of healthy carbs as advised. I'm on day 10 and feel no different. I expected to have more energy by now. Folks with diarrhea seem to have better/immediate results; makes sense since Xifaxin targets the bacteria that causes diarrhea. To try to kill off the archaea, I'm taking my own course of natural antibiotics now overlapping with Xifaxin (allicin, berberine, neem). I have leaky gut bad; SIBO has got to go."

Rifaximin for Hepatic Encephalopathy "Life-changing. I have a stage 4 cirrhotic decompensated liver due to PBC and NASH. I was so frustrated, confused, and depressed with HE symptoms. Terrible tinnitus and headache with mood and personality changes signaled it was time to take Lactulose again for a few weeks. I could not tolerate the GI problems or the sickeningly sweet taste of Lactulose daily, so I only took it when I noticed HE symptoms. Now I can comply with the anti-HE regimen easily. No more rollercoaster of symptoms. PBC with liver failure causes miserable fatigue and muscle wasting. To combat that, my nutritionist put me on a high-protein diet. That's only possible because Xifaxan does such a great job! So now my energy levels and mood are pretty close to normal despite being extremely ill. Thanks! Way too expensive, though. I'm fortunate to have good insurance and a doctor who is a pro at arguing for her patients to get the care they deserve, but $100/day is an obscene price!"

Rifaximin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "This medication has been a lifesaver. My symptoms included chronic constipation, extreme gas pain, farting, burping, and acid indigestion constantly. I have gastroparesis from nerve damage with early fullness, and most foods caused nausea, stomach pain, and noise with gurgling. I've been on a number of other ineffective meds in the past. Recently, my doctor put me on a 14-day trial of this medication at 550 mg 3x a day. I honestly felt a difference on day 2! Now I'm nearing completion of the 14 days, and almost all my extreme, very chronic symptoms are almost gone. I can successfully add in new foods and live a normal life. No gurgling and noise in my stomach, much more normal farting/burping, normal bowel movements, and minimal pain. Also, I have not experienced one side effect from this medication other than improved quality of life. I do also take Protonix for acid reflux, but this med has been the positive change. 100% recommend! I'm not sure about insurance coverage because I used samples."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I have been dealing with IBS-D for about 4 years now. The only thing I found that works is Xifaxan. The first time I took it, it lasted about 4 months. I was prescribed another round, and relief lasted a year. Normally, I don't see results immediately like some. For me, it takes some time after I finish the medication to have complete consistency. Give it some time."

Rifaximin for Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea "Do not take this drug! It made my symptoms of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) ten times worse. Before taking the drug, I had very mild symptoms, just some light feelings of hunger after eating. Now, six days after finishing a two-week course, I’m doubled over in pain, severely constipated, severely depressed, unable to sleep, and in a constant state of emergency. I’m worried that now I have IBS. Please do not take this drug."
