For Constipation, Chronic "I took lactulose while on vacation with another couple. My usual problem happened, so I took a half dose when we got home. We proceeded to play cards. In about an hour, I ran to the bathroom, barely making it. Then again, not making it. Long story short, I ran out of clean underwear and also used most of my underwear during that evening. The next day, I utilized the washer and have never taken lactulose again. I'll just stick with the occasional laxative and live with my problem."

For Hepatic Encephalopathy "I started out on Lactulose when I found out I had cirrhosis. That medicine tasted awful, and I had to take it three times a day! I mixed it with everything under the sun, but no relief from that nasty stuff. After taking it for months (I had to take it), I asked my gastroenterologist if there was anything else that I could take, he prescribed XIFAXAN, which does the same thing. Wish I knew that before! LOL It comes as a tablet and is so easy to take. The only downside is that it’s very expensive. I don’t know if this will help anyone else, but it was a lot better than taking that nasty liquid."

For Constipation, Acute "I have an anal fissure, which is very painful if my stool is hard. Each time I go to the toilet, the fissure can reopen, and the healing process has to start again. Taking lactulose has softened my stool, so giving my anal fissure time to heal. I take 15 ml once a day before bed with a cup of water. It certainly makes life in the morning a lot less painful."

For Constipation, Chronic "Given lactulose for chronic constipation from IBS. At first, it wasn't too bad, but then I started getting severe gas pains, lots of gas, abdominal pain, and nausea. Yes, it worked for the constipation, but I felt sick all the time, and it made IBS pain much worse."

For Constipation, Chronic "I was prescribed lactulose at 10 ml, 2-3 times a day. It looks like syrup and tastes like syrup with a lot less sugar in it. I did not suffer from cramps, but did pass a lot of gas while taking it. Also, it did improve my constipation quite a bit, so I'm happy with it."

For Constipation, Chronic "Doctor prescribed 15 ml 2x/day. Started today at 10:50; I had a normal BM at 2:30, first after many years. Then I took it again at 5:00; no luck. I have multiple sclerosis since 2005 and IBS-C. This took away my pain one time, and I hope it does in the future."

For Constipation, Acute "Try different ways of taking this medicine, lactulose. For me, taking it the way the label said just didn’t do anything. It caused major and very embarrassing gas. Honestly, don’t leave the house the day you begin this dosing. What I found was it hindered my sleep because of the gas, a lot of tummy rumbling, luckily, I was sleeping alone that night. Don’t underestimate the frequency of the gas either, constant. I think try out different ways. I take 1 entire capful, and that usually does the trick. Just don’t make any plans for that day."

For Constipation, Chronic "I had surgery on my stomach and was severely constipated after. It was agony to go. I was prescribed lactulose, but it’s far too sweet and syrupy. I gagged every time I tried to take it, even when I mixed it with other liquids. Even the thought of taking it made me gag, and it didn’t help at all when I needed to use the bathroom. I used it for about a week and still couldn’t go without being in agony. I switched to Dulcoease capsules, and they worked the same day!"

For Constipation, Chronic "Hubby is having chronic constipation. Many of us will when approaching 90. He used and still uses Casgara Sagrada (which never loses its potency. You don't have to take more and more.) This lactulose seems to work for him when he takes it regularly. He is also now taking two tablespoons of ground flaxseed stirred in 8 oz. of liquid daily. I do not have constipation now, although I did as a child mainly from poor diet and not drinking very much water. A former mother-in-law religiously chewed a few slices of apple with some stewed prunes every night before bed. I understand that now she is 102. What a surprise!"

For Constipation, Acute "4 days of suffering, nothing was coming out of me despite 30 times of trying, also had a lot of pain at my kidneys. I had all the fiber foods, drank gallons of water, but nothing!! One of my friends suggested loose syrup, which I drank 40ml. Finally, I felt some pressure, took my chance, but the size of the tool was so wide that my body was undersized. What came next is graphic, but I literally had no choice. I had to manually clear some of the hard stool out of my butt. Passage still felt super small for the huge train, but I had to push it so hard, it felt like I was giving birth as it exited me. What followed the impacted stool was runnier, and everything was just free-flowing. This is a super painful experience, and I now understand what others go through. If my experience could be of any help, the medicine is for sure effective, but it took 8+ hours to show results with a lot of my own efforts to make it work."

For Constipation, Acute "If you don't mind the overwhelming feeling of urgency and flatulence, you can take 5 tablespoons of lactulose along with a bowl of bran cereal for breakfast. No matter how hard they try, most people won't be able to hold back the results after 4 hours."

For Constipation, Acute "I started to take this the way it says on the label, 15 mL twice a day. It did nothing for me other than cause terrible, vile flatulence. The smell was like a sewer, and zero relief. Annoyed after about 3 days, I decided to take more. So I took 60 mL in one. Within 2 hours, I had had a bowel movement. In the end, all that came out was liquid. There seemed to be less flatulence also. I find it’s sort of unpredictable when you take it day and night, you may or may not have a movement the next day. Or you might, and it might not be satisfactory (could be very small, still feel like you need to go after), which is very almost upsetting really when you know what it’s like to suffer so much from constipation. The flatulence ends if you take it for a few days, it’s as though your body needs time to get used to it. If you’re going to use this, use it on a day when you don’t need to be anywhere or meet anyone! Take the 60 mL and take it with a warm drink to help it along."

For Constipation, Chronic "I've been taking it for about 2 weeks, twice a day. Indeed, it causes some very funny noises in my tummy, which my kids find hilarious. I definitely have the passing gas issues as well. Although my kids seem to have some giggles, I find it a bit embarrassing. It does work wonders for my issues, as it works within a few hours of taking it."

For Constipation, Chronic "I have a motility problem after some of my bowel was cut out after diverticulitis. Then 2 hernias repaired. I have no sense of needing to go to the toilet at all. I have to take either lactulose or magnesium sulfate to empty my bowel twice a week. I prefer lactulose, it's easier on my bowel, it doesn't make my bowel as sore as magnesium. I take 60 ml of lactulose, a single dose, twice a week. Sure, there is some flatulence, but it works fine."

For Constipation, Acute "I occasionally use this lactulose for severe constipation, most often caused by drugs. I don't find it works straight away. I have lymphocytic colitis and IBS-D, so my gut is very sensitive. Yes, lactulose is effective, but very quickly the frequent farts become smelly and toxic. I stay away from people because of it. Over a few days, farts start to expel little bits of poo, and I soil my pants. I become too frightened to fart when out. I also can't tell the difference between a fart or a poo, so I have to go to the loo every time, just in case. Bit of a nuisance when it turns out to be just a fart. For those without lymphocytic colitis and IBS-D, it's probably fine. Don't be put off by my experience."

For Constipation, Chronic "So I am 17 weeks pregnant and have been constipated very badly for about 8 weeks. Just took 20 ml of this stuff and literally within 10 minutes had a proper bowel movement. Caused a lot of cramping though, and now I have diarrhea. It also made me sick, but at least I have finally had a bowel movement! Fantastic stuff."

For Constipation, Acute "I suffer from endometriosis, and for the past 5 years, I've been prescribed codeine on and off when I have my flare-ups, which are roughly only 4-6 times a year. I'd always been prescribed laxatives that weren't very helpful with my constipation - they either took too long to work, and I'd be in pain for a few days, or they didn't soften the stool enough, so when I did finally pass a motion, it would be extremely painful. I discovered lactulose 5 months ago when my mum bought me some from a pharmacy, and it has been a lifesaver! I only take it when I haven't passed a motion in a few days, and every other home remedy I do (kiwifruit and prune juice, increased water, exercise) hasn't helped. It works within 1-2 hours, and it softens the stool enough so that I feel like I'm passing a normal motion, and it's virtually painless. I highly recommend this! It's the best laxative I've ever come across, and I've had my fair share of trials of different laxatives in the last 5 years."

For Constipation, Chronic "I passed gas and a bit of abdominal discomfort the first time I took this med, but the side effect of the second time is worse. Although defecation occurred one hour after I took the med at a 10 mL dose only, I experienced painful bowel cramping that lasted for hours into early morning."

For Constipation, Chronic "I have been using lactulose for chronic constipation for three years. It is very effective. I now find that the sweet taste is making me gag and/or vomit. There are times when just looking at the bottle invokes the nausea. I have mixed in other liquid so I can't taste it, however, I can't take it anymore. Any wise ideas?"

For Constipation, Acute "My doctor prescribed a bottle of this 45 ml twice a day. Had very little effect on me, just a few tummy rumbles. The doctor then decided I was partially impacted and prescribed Movicol 3 times daily. Did clear the impaction after 8 days. Now use lactulose 30 ml twice daily after my IBS diagnosis. Keeps me reasonably regular."

For Constipation, Chronic "I have had chronic constipation since 5 years old. I had chronic pain from a condition I was born with, and at 30 received OxyContin for the pain, otherwise, I would be in a wheelchair. As a child, after eating, I would bloat, I still do, even on just 2 cups of coffee. It has taken 4 days for lactulose to work, but I feel a lot better. My doctor said, 'water, water, water!' as the lactulose draws the water into our bowels. She also mentioned trying the MSP diet, as you can be misdiagnosed as IBS and it could be certain proteins and sugars, as well as wheat, barley, beans, and dairy, which makes it too hard for our gut to process."

For Constipation, Acute "This worked after 48 hours. The label said that it could take up to 48 hours, but most of the other reviews said that it worked much faster, so when it didn't work quickly for me, I began to lose hope. Thankfully, it worked, pretty much exactly after 48 hours. I'm in my second trimester, and hadn't done a poo for 4 days, and the last time had been very painful. I'd felt incredibly bloated and uncomfortable, and hunched over when I walked, and couldn't get comfortable to sleep. When I first went again after 48 hours, it wasn't easy, but it wasn't really painful either. I stirred the medicine into large glasses of water to help me drink enough fluids, and also to dilute the excessively sweet taste."

For Constipation, Acute "I had constipation as a side effect of the Codamol I was taking. I was sore, and I’m a big dude. My stomach was solid all the way to the bottom of my ribs. I drank two mouthfuls of this stuff and had the best clear-out ever, must have been an hour on the loo over a three-hour period."

Lactulose for Constipation, Chronic "I was struggling to pass bowel motions, so I decided to seek advice from a pharmacy. They asked what medication I was on. I informed them that I took Gliclazide for diabetes and Allopurinol for gout. They recommended Duphalac. I have the following observations and advice. The leaflet recommended a dose of 15 - 45 ml. I chose 15 ml. Within two hours, I had a hypoglycemic episode and bowel motions that lasted over an hour, on and off. There was no warning of that possibility. Also, I noted that the plastic bottle container cap was not childproof! I do not recommend this product. AVOID."

For Constipation, Chronic "Absolutely brilliant. You must drink lots of water for it to work. Having been very constipated, my pharmacist advised 40 ml twice a day, but I only needed one dose at this amount. Would definitely recommend it."
