"I've been on this medication for almost 8 years now and could not imagine going off of it. When I first started on carbamazepine, I could tell the difference within a few weeks. My mood swings became less volatile, and it gives me a 'buffer period' between actions and my reactions so that I am able to think about what is happening and react in an appropriate way. Weight gain and sexual side effects have not been a problem for me with this medication either."

"Made me feel so ill from day 1 on just 200 mg. Dr. wanted me to increase to 400 mg after 2 weeks (did tell me I might feel unwell, but to try & stick it out for at least 2 weeks). Was left for 5 weeks on 400 mg, feeling very unwell. Headache, pain in my neck & shoulders, dizzy, pain in my kidneys (maybe just pain in my lower back muscles). Couldn't get up out of bed... Dr. (without seeing me) told me through my care coordinator to reduce to 200 mg for 3 days, then stop altogether. 6 days after stopping, I still feel really unwell, especially when I just wake up or am tired. Hope this damage to me isn't permanent. Seems not getting any better after 6 days being off it..."

"I started this medication on 4/20. Took 100 mg in the morning at 8 a.m. and my second dose at 8 p.m. By 10 p.m. I started having severe muscle spasms in the neck but told myself it was just from my TMD. I again woke at 12:30 a.m. in excruciating pain from every muscle in my body in spasm and all my joints hurting. I spent the rest of the night trying to just find a comfortable position until the doctors opened. I stopped the carbamazepine and went back on baclofen according to the doctor's orders. After seeing the doctor, I started to develop a rash. Pretty sure I'm allergic, but the doctor wants me to try it again once the symptoms subside. I'll post again, I guess, in a few weeks if I do start it again."
