Cholera Vaccine

The cholera vaccine is given to help protect you from bacteria that cause cholera. Cholera is an infection that causes severe diarrhea and vomiting. The cholera vaccine is given as a liquid to swallow. Outside the United States, the vaccine may be given in 2 or 3 doses. In the United States, the vaccine is given as a single dose. This vaccine may be given to people ages 2 to 64.
DISCHARGE INSTRUCTIONS:
Call your local emergency number (911 in the US) for any of the following:
- Your mouth and throat are swollen.
- You are wheezing or have trouble breathing.
- You have chest pain or your heart is beating faster than normal for you.
- You feel like you are going to faint.

Return to the emergency department if:
- Your face is red or swollen.
- You have hives that spread over your body.
- You feel weak or dizzy.
Call your doctor if:
- You have abdominal pain, nausea, or diarrhea.
- You lose your appetite.
- You have a headache or feel more tired than usual.
- You have questions or concerns about the cholera vaccine.
Follow up with your doctor as directed:
Write down your questions so you remember to ask them during your visits.
