Wellbutrin severe allergic reaction - How long does the itching last?

I was on wellbutrin xl at 150 mg for a week. Then upped to 300mg. I immediately began itching. After reading neg experienced others wrote about generic, i switched to Brand Wellbutrin on Day 3. Itching continued. Developed into rash all over my legs and arms. Worst itching I've every felt. Soon broke out in large hives. Dr took me off immediately when I told him about rash. I took it for 5 days at 300mg and now have been off for 5 days. But I'm still itching and continuing to break out. Not as bad, but can't sleep at night. Taking benadryl and prednisone, but not going away as I thought.
My question is this: For anyone who has experienced similar reaction, how long does it take for itching and hives to go away, (or for meds to get out your system)?
Any advice would help. I can't find any answers or info on the duration of an allergic reaction to Wellbutrin, although I know it is somewhat common. Thanks!

Hello all. I was prescribed bupropion extended release 75g back in November , by 10 days in to the medication I started getting an uncontrollable itch all over my body mostly arms and legs. It was insane. I bought all kids of over the counter creams, cortizones , changed my water filter , started taking Allegra daily with it. The medication seemed like a good idea so I continued to take it thinking the side effect would wean off but it did not. I had to completely stop the medication 5 weeks later. Long story short it’s now April and I am still suffering from this uncontrollable itch. I have taken two rounds of cortisone treatments and it helps while I am taking the pills a little but as soon I stop the itch is really bad again.
I have gone some blood tests for allergies and everything is fine. I have tried everything and nothing gets rid of this insanity. If anyone had had this longer than me (4+months ) please reply and let me know when did it actually go away for you and what is anything helped you. I am desperate. This interferes with my quality of life on a daily basis.

I know this question is from 8.5 years ago but it is SO NICE to read about other people's experiences with wellbutrin that are similar to mine. My doc put me on bupropion XL 150mg and I started taking it about 2.5 weeks ago. I didn't experience the common side effects too badly, but I was cranky and had a headache for the first week. 4 days ago I woke up with most insane hives on my thighs and armpit area. My hands and wrists were so swollen that I couldn't use them. Doc put me on prednisone and cetizirine to relieve the hives. I just moved and got a new mattress so I figured it was one of those that triggered these hives but I'm starting to think otherwise since I've never been allergic to mattresses or moving before... Still waking up everyday with new hives but not as intense as the first episode. Going to go off the wellbutrin and see how it goes!

Was taking bupropion 75mg (Wellbutrin SR) once every other day (NOT recommended by my nurse practitioner) for about 3 weeks. Felt some pain/discomfort from nerve/muscle pain after about 3 weeks.. which I did not experience before taking Wellbutrin. Have read up on very few people experiencing nerve/muscle discomfort from Wellbutrin. Stopped taking it for that reason. Once in a while still, at night, I'm feeling strange mild itchy feeling which feels nerve-related. Going to see what happens, if not resolved, seeing my doctor ASAP.
Another odd side effect, increased appetite? Really wish I could keep taking Wellbutrin because I am normally a stick and was enjoying the increased appetite/ potential weight gain!! It also improved my sex drive and mood. :( Really sad it didn't work. If I find out the discomfort wasn't due to it, I may try again.

I wound up taking Wellbutrin for 30 days exactly, the itching began at around 2 weeks and it was unbearable by the 30th day. I was taking a Benadryl every night to be able to sleep. When my month prescription was over, I called my doctor for the second time about it and she said to stop taking it. A couple of weeks later, no meds, the itching was still there, and she convinced me to try Prozac (mind you, these were both prescribed because they have a possible side effect of weight loss, so not even for anxiety or depression). I took that and IMMEDIATELY started having problems with high blood pressure and after about three weeks, a full blown panic attack or something that I thought was a heart attack and wound me up in the ER. I stopped taking that as well at that point and my BP got better right away but I was still itching. All in all, the itching took at least 3 months to stop, probably closer to 4.

This post is for the people wondering if you can push past the hives as a side effect. I was on 150sr for 6 months and was doing well, lost 15lbs had minimal side effects but was still experiencing anxiety attacks so my doctor prescribed 300s which I started 12 weeks ago. About 3 days after starting the new dosage I started to get itchy palms and itchy scalp, it progressed into full on hives and dermatographia. I have sensitive skin and get episodes of "stress hives" so I thought they would eventually clear up (they didn't), I also spoke to my pharmacist who insisted the hives were not hives and not caused by wellbutrin... I take claritin daily for allergies and started doubling the dose which helped somewhat. I stopped taking the wellbutrin two days ago after talking to my doctor. The hives have become worse since stopping...
also have the worst heartburn of my life and believe it to be a side effect of the wellbutrin.I will post an update if and when the hives and heartburn ever disappear.
Hope people are feeling better!

I would have to say that it probably depends on the person, but for me personally it took 3 weeks to go away.

I began taking Wellbutrin and several weeks later began itching in my eyes, hands and feet (and other sensitive areas!) it became more severe over several days as I tried lotions, oatmeal baths, topical anti-itch sprays and creams - finally realizing it was an allergic reaction. I took Allegra and it went away. I tapered off the Wellbutrin over a week ago. But every time I stop taking the Allegra the itching comes back (at night for some reason). Sometimes its mild and sometimes more severe. I read that Wellbutrin stays in your system for weeks!

I started bupropion a couple of weeks ago for the first time - 150mg for a week and now into 300mg. I itched around my torso and feet suddenly a few days ago - very strange - thought it was dry skin. Didn’t realize this was a potential side effect. I have continued taking it so far and my itching has lessened - pockets in the groin area - very uncomfortable!

I too started on 150 mg for one week, now I’m on week 2 of 300mg. A few days ago, I noticed the palms of my hands were itching for no apparent reason. No rash, no insect bites. Then other random parts of my body felt itchy and I thought maybe a mosquito got ahold of me. But I never saw any bites. Later that night, I woke up with THE WORST itching on my hands that I’ve ever felt. It felt like hundreds of ant bites. I lotioned up with hydrocortisone cream and took a Zyrtec. The next day I was ok (I think it was bc of the Zyrtec) but I thought my itch was due to a recent change in laundry detergent. So I bought hypoallergenic detergent and rewashed all my clothes and sheets. The next day, yesterday, the itch came back, all over my body. No rash anywhere, but anywhere I scratched turned really red. So I took another Zyrtec and it helped. I really thought it was the detergent but after reading all of these comments, I’m going to let my doctor know. I’m just confused bc it seems like everyone gets a rash or hives which I don’t have. Anyone else?

Ask for hydroxyzine that is the only thing that helped my huge traveling hives go away.

I started Wellbutrin XL 150mg about about 3 weeks ago for depression. I am now starting to feel weird stuff happen and after reading these comments, it looks like its the medication. I have left eye twitching that started about 4 days ago, I starting itching everywhere on my body (random times and areas), and I have a sore throat and what feels like tightness when swallowing. I thought I would feel any allergic reaction immediately after starting the meds but it seems it took a little while to kick in. If I scratch a certain area it turns really red and starts to welt and itches uncontrollably. It has hit everywhere on my body at random times including my feet and hands. I used Zyrtec because I thought it was a change in detergent that started the reaction. I have been lucky all of my life to have no allergies until now. I have a sore throat and what feels like a lump or tightness in my chest. My eye twitching happens a few times a day and I'm noticing it more often everyday. Looks like I need to stop taking it.
I had been on the generic Wellbutrin 150 mg for exactly 30 days. After about 3 weeks the itching started and it was insane. I didn't realize it was the medication at first, I tried to narrow down the things I had eaten and whether I had changed any soaps, but none of that applied. Then I realized that it may have been the medicine building up in my system. I stopped taking the medicine at day 30 and that was two and a half weeks ago. I am still itching terribly and have begun to get hives particularly on my shoulders. I called the doctor for the second time, who prescribed prednisone and I am to keep taking Benadryl as needed. My itching starts around 10 in the morning and gets progressively worse. I can't take benadryl during the day because it knocks me out but in the evening when I get home, I have to take one just so I don't say up itching all night.

Grateful for all the posts on here. I wanted to share my story as well to offer some insight.
Years ago I tried Wellbutrin X R for depression, and it worked miraculously. I had felt energetic and positive like I hadn’t felt in years. But after a couple weeks, I broke out in a rash on my hands and arms. After realizing it was from the medication, I stopped taking it and the rash immediately subsided.
Fast forward 2 years, and I have been struggling again with depression pretty badly. I always had a bit of doubt lingering in my mind that maybe it was a coincidence and the rash was from something else. And it worked so well for my depression I figured I could give it one more chance.
So I started taking Wellbutrin HCL (non-extended release) 75mg 3 times a day for 3 weeks. Again, a rash breaks out all over my arms. I stop taking the drug, sure now that it is the cause. 3 days pass and now I have hives all over my body - swollen, itchy blotches covering my neck, my back, my arms and legs, my stomach. I start freaking out and go to the ER. $1,000 and 4 hours later they give me a 3 day supply of oral steroids (prednisone) and told me to take Benadryl.
I am still, two months later, taking Benadryl daily to stop the hives from coming back. As soon as I go past 20+ hours of my last Benadryl dose they return and I am forced to take it again to make it go away.
I guess my point being, if you have this reaction, stop taking it immediately. Trust yourself. I feel like I’m in a nightmare every day, hoping the itching will stop. Thank you all for sharing your stories.

I've been on 150 mg of wellbutrin for about 2 weeks. Today my scalp started itching, followed by my hands and feet. Soon my scalp broke out in hives and I left work. By the time I got home (about a mile and a half drive) I had hives all over my neck, back, thighs and stomach. I grabbed the first thing i could find which was lavender and frankincense essential oils, mixed them with a little coconut oil, and rubbed it all over my body. I felt immediate relief. I followed up with allegra and was able to come back to work. I also have some serious heartburn. Have put in several calls to my Dr. and am waiting for a call back. I will not be taking any more of this drug unless they tell me I need to ween off of it.

Took the 150 mg and 4 days ago started the 300 mg. Now I have hives head to toe starting today. It's every where but feet and hands are the worst itching. Too late today I took it then looked it up. Threw them away. Never again I'd rather smoke then deal with this.

I have been on generic Wellbutrin XL 150mg for almost 3 weeks and did the same thing, broke out in hives all over, head, bottom of feet, in the palms of my hand, arms, all over my legs I’m taking Benadryl, Claritin, and some unused prednisone from a couple of months ago. I called my pharmacist yesterday (6/12/18) to ask him if he thinks it’s the Wellbutrin and he said no. I asked him it the brand name would make a difference compared to generic and he said no to that too. But from what I’ve read it is the medication so I’ve just stopped taking it. Hopefully the itching will stop soon!

I was on Wellbutrin for years without any side effects. Then out of nowhere for a whole year I begin breaking out in hives/rash different areas of my body went to the Dr. over and over again, different meds. Was diagnosed with chronic hives. Than 1 day in January of this year within 30 mins.of taking it had a severe reaction shortness of breath and swelled up. That's when i realized it was the med. Stopped taking it within the week no rash/hives.

Just a word of caution. Contact your doctor for a reducing dosage schedule. Weaning yourself off improperly or too quickly and you may experience discontinuation syndrome which can cause some nasty effects. Best regards, Wildcat (beautifulmarincounty)

Thanks Wildcat, I did wean off under doctor's orders. For those of you asking how long the itching lasts, unfortunately I still have the itchy rash. But not at the intensity it once was. My last dose of Wellbutrin was June 20. So almost 2 months now. My dermatologist has given me a monthly cortisone shot. Which has helped quite a bit. . But after 4 weeks, it wears off and the rash appears in a new part of my leg or my back. I travel with a back scratcher now. So ridiculous! I ta0ke Allegra in the am and benadryl at night.
