I was taking Xanax .25 mg for many years as needed during the day but took it every night for sleep. I want to wean off of it. I took 1/2 of .25 mg for 3 weeks and then 1/2 of .25 mg 3x a week for 3 weeks..Then I decided to stop taking it at all and have trouble falling to sleep so I went back to take 1/2 of .25 mg 3 x a week. How long should I continue to take that dosage? and will taking 1/2 off .25mg 3 x a week be okay if I cant stop totally? Please advise?
Weaning off of .25 mg Xanax down to 1/2 of .25mg every night for 3 weeks then taking 1/2 3x a week?

Xanax stays within the body approximately 10-14 hours.
Thus if you have chronic insomnia,
it would only help the night you take it.
If you are wanting to simply get off of benzodiazepines, there are a kaleidoscope of other medications for that you might investigate, such as Belsomra or -low- doses of Seroquel or other medications.
In any event, it is imperative that you discuss this with your doctor, and never attempt any withdrawal without supervision.
My answer is not given as medical advice.
