I also had 2 nights this past week where I was sleeping for maybe 30 min at a time then awake. It was terrible felt like crap dragging myself to work. I had Tried taking another 25 mg trazadone-at midnight didn't help, tried .25 mg xanax at 3am, didn't help. Just trying to figure out how to stay asleep. Even tried with eating more food before bed that didn't seem to help. When I do sleep it's wonderful on 50mg of trazadone but when it's only a couple nights a week is it worth it? My mood has improved, i am definitely less stressed, lower appetite (good thing) but I can't take having no sleep!!! Advice anyone???
Week 3 of 50 mg trazadone up all night or wake up after only 5-6 hours of sleep?

It seems as if you are having paradoxical effects from trazodone, and I would recommend immediately discussing this with your doctor.
Low doses of Seroquel is something you might investigate, as well as a new class of drugs for insomnia such as Belsomra.
Also, melatonin 10 mg is something you might consider taking concomitantly with a medication for insomnia with the approval of your physician.
In any event, a thorough discussion and supervision by your doctor is needed in your situation, and I hope all becomes better for you, -I really do- and I sincerely hope this helps!

Hi Sacoba,
What a tough situation you're in! I can empathize as I've dealt with insomnia for years.
Trazodone only works for several hours for me, like you. May I suggest you talk to your doc about Ambien? It kept me asleep the entire night! But be careful... You need to put aside a good 7 or 8 hours to devote to sleep. Also, there's a new warning that reports show patients have sleepwalked and also sleep-drove. In my case, this did not ever occur.
Best wishes to you! :)
Hi Sacoba,
I can empathize! The lack of sleep zaps your resources. You're unable to tackle minute stresses without adequate rest. trazodone 50mg is a fairly low dose. Call your MD and ask for an increase. Most MD will let you take a second dose if your not asleep within an hour. You have to be-careful with Trazodone, when working well its great for an 8-10 hour snooze so, if permitted you do not want to take that second dose too late. You mentioned taking xanax as well. Do you have an anxiety disorder or was this simply prescribed for sleep. I ask because if your anxiety is poorly controlled then the Trazodone, especially at the lower dose will not work.
Just an additional share, I have a set bedtime ritual, meditation, no electronics (2) hours before bed, and I use an app called relaxed melodies. It's free or you can buy the upgrades. When my insomnia began, I had to make severe changes to my lifestyle or I would average 5 hours a week. Best of luck and may you have a restful nights sleep-everynight!
Hi Sacoba,
I have been taking trazodone for over 20 years. At first, I took 50 mg a night. However, it was not enough. I would only get a few hours of sleep per night. My doctor did adjust it to 100 mg per night and that works good for me. I sleep about 6-7 hours per night. I have been in chronic pain for just as long and the trazodone works for me. I am allowed to take 150 mg per night if needed. However, that only happens once in a great while. I sure hope this helps. Check with your doctor.
Thank you
H Sacoba-
I can relate to not being able to stay asleep. Like you said when you get at least 6-7 hours it makes a difference. I am not sure why you cannot take 50 mg of Trazadone every night for sleep if your doctor prescribes it? There are people that take it every night.
Hope you can get some good Zzzzzs soon.
Thank you for taking the time to answer!
