I see a LOT of people who just seem to be morbidly obese taking up handicapped spaces. Shouldn't those people be walking the extra few yards, and the elderly be given the privilege of parking close to a store?
Also, the truly handicapped, people in wheelchairs, or using walkers! THEY should have the spaces first!!
Does anyone else get their undies in a twist about this, the obese using handicapped parking spots? Or seeing perfectly healthy people using a handicapped spot? My SIL has MS and she NEVER uses handicapped parking unless she is in a bad flare, or her balance is quite bad.
This makes me so angry of late, but some illnesses cannot be seen, like fibromyalgia, perhaps the people using the spots are actually handicapped in some capacity?
Thanks all,
Lara
P.S. I guess what I mean is, doesn't it just chap your buns to see 'normals' using handicapped parking???
Should people with Fibromyalgia have handicapped parking stickers for their auto's?

I walk like a marine-but because of tendon problems I can't walk very far-so I use my permit. Since the statin poison, some days my purse is too heavy and makes my legs and feet hurt so bad and swell up. I'm not fat either-
Nothing like going to Home Depot-last space taken by a hog, last electric cart taken by her- then going the same way when leaving-and she parks at a donut shop-far end of the lot-trots in for her donuts.
meyati, when you are at a supermarket and see someone that qualifies for the moniker 'morbidly obese', look in their cart, see what they are buying.
It may just blow your hair back.
You should use a cart if you need it, too, meyati, I'm not judging anyone who legitimately needs to use a cart, nor handicapped parking. It's the posers who piss me off!
Well they can't buy Twinkies any more. I go to a military base, where even the elders are usually slim-so I get so shocked when I go to a civilian store-and see these people-soda, potato chips, etc.
What burns me here-- is healthy young men that uses somebody's permit- they park, jump out with a back pack and run up steps,- jump over 5 ft. retaining walls. The state is doing the best it can, by renewing permits with the driver's license but that can be a problem when the handicap person doesn't drive. So they put a time limit on it or a certificate signed by the doctor.
I know, meyati, you see perfectly healthy 20somethings using the handicapped parking! I have called the po po on them before. We have actual seniors that ride around in a "Handicapped Parking Enforcer" car, they ticket the people that park in the spaces that are reserved for the handicapped. I love it when I see them out and about, they are all senior citizens and do this as volunteer work. Every state should have this,
DOES YOURS? Anyone?
Here they tow them. This state is very friendly to veterans. We have lots of disabled--we have disabled vet license plates and it is tax free-no annual tag fees, but that does not allow for parking in handicap. To park, you need a doctor's certificate. Then you get a placard-this state has-can the patient walk 30 ft? The doctor has to certify the knees or whatever is bad . We give permits to people with these conditions that don't drive- but as on DC member said-her daughter can't walk and she lets her out. I'm sorry, but we don't ticket here, we tow.
I have fibromyalgia and have a handicapped sticker. I don't always use it. I have it because walking a distance makes my legs hurt so badly, I then can't do the shopping I have to do. The ones that get me are the ones who don't have a sticker but park there anyway.
I'm happy for you, kaismama, if it lowers the pain by not walking, then you most certainly deserve it. There are times I wish I had one. I could ask my doctor, he would agree to it, but I would only use it during flare, and here's the kicker... has ANYONE lost their car in a parking lot during flare? Now that is an embarrassment!
But the malingerers really fry me, the fakers. I don't know how they get away with it, lie to their doctors?
What am I saying, people LIE to get pain meds, so of course they will lie to get handicap parking!
Dear Mac,
I hear you girl! My Ortho Dr gave me a handicapped tag before I had my knee replaced. I didn't use it unless it was one of those horrible days I was walking around with my cane. After I healed from the surgery, I stopped using it altogether. Figured since I was bionic now I could walk, even though he made it a permanent tag. Now with the bone spurs and arthritis so bad in my hip, walking is once again a challenge on some days, but I still haven't resorted to using my tag. I get really steamed when I see people using those spots that appear normal or are obese. I try and tell myself that there must be some medically necessary reason, but I'll admit that I just don't always believe myself! At least I'm not the only one who gets aggravated about it!
Lisa
Lisa, you are so cute! I try to tell myself the same thing, "I can't see what they are dealing with, nor can they feel the hair-on-fire pain I am dealing with", so you are right my dear friend!! But still... I do try to be kind.
My husband once told off a very obese couple for having a handicapped sticker! This was years ago, but hells bells! that was embarrassing! He told them that they were not handicapped JUST morbidly obese, and they SHOULD park in the regular spots, just to get a little exercise! Can you imagine my horror? I felt really bad for them, as I was fatty-fatty two-by-four after my daughter was born, so I knew just how they felt! ok, I wasn't obese, but I FELT like I was!!
Big gentle hug for,
Lisa
And then you see them riding around the store on a scooter, and you want to say you need the exercise. But at that weight, they can't exercise and they have many physical problems because of it.
Mac, Lisa, and Kaismama. You all three are cute. And correct. And you have to watch them scooters Kaismama. They'll run you over in a heartbeat. Eggs flying out your arms, and everything girl. They don't care. lol. Ruthie
lol Ruthie, I never used one because I'm afraid I'll kill someone, lol
And there are some people that let their kids run wild. All over the place, like their in McDonalds playland. It's hard enough to move around on foot in that place at Christmas time. We went yesterday. I said to my hubby. Uh ugh. I'll go at 10:00 or 11:00p.m. But not this time of day. He made a remark about me going back later. I said..Are you crazy in the head? I'm not coming here without you. He just gave me his Ok honey look. hee hee. My husband has even suggested I use one of the scooter thingie's in there. Because he knew I was struggling with my knee's and back. I said I would struggle for a bit. I aint riding one of those things..yet. But I have seen people in a lot better shape than I with sticker's... for sure. Ruthie
The kids running wild is really dangerous. I don't know what parents are thinking these days. It takes very little to knock over a little old lady with a cane, yet these kids just don't give a damn. They aren't taught any respect. I saw one run into an old man valiantly shopping with parkinson's and his walking was already iffy. A kid ran into him, and if it wasn't for the grocery cart he'd have fallen. His mom never said a word to him.
KM, Ruthie, Lisa, and anyone else I forgot,
I'm laughing so hard about the scooters, kaismama, you are right on the money, sistah, about the morbidly obese riding those scooters! Sometimes the flab sort of falls out and covers up part of the scooter, ugh! I've never been rude to a person who is truly obese, I figure they've got enough on their plate (pun intended!) and don't need me to make them feel even worse.
Did any of you catch the Dr Phil episode about that woman who was so huge, that the fire department had to take a WALL OUT, just to get her out of her own home?! She couldn't walk, so it took like ten guys to lift her on a gurney to get her into an ambulance. I felt so bad for her!! It was heartbreaking.
Oops, forgot about the little kids having NO respect for the elderly! Tis so true, our society in general do not respect the elderly.
Ruthie, "eggs flying" got me laughing so hard this morning, thanks girl!!
They don't have respect for anybody-they knock down toddlers too. I'm scared to death to go around a corner on a store scooter. I can't see-and I honk the horn to alert everyone.
