There are approved/marketed 'pain killers' that are not classified as controlled, but they don't work on pain, for I personally have chronic back pain issues and I've tried everything under the sun, homeopathic, supplementation, prescription, experimental, and nothing.
Only carisoprodol 350mg 3 X day as prescribed, was the one and ONLY thing that worked on muscle stiffness/atrophied muscles, and joint pain! And big pharma couldn't have that so they encourage doctors to LIE to their patients saying it has been discontinued - HA! I know friends,, etc who've told me the exact incidents, BUT my aunt had to go down to the city rehab drug clinic in order to get it, and I have done it as well- but in much better form than pills- in a shot
