I have had shingles for 8 weeks. I took Valtrex at the onset. I am using a cream compounded by local pharmacy, plus lidocaine , ibuprofen, gabapentin, and more. Nothing has been able to receive the burning pain. If you have had experience with shingles and know of any medication that helped you receive the pain, please reply.

R. L. my herpes (shingles was diagnosed in 1978, at Standford hospital, palo alto, CA., the reason i mention this is to prove i know what it is and not getting the diagnosis mixed up with cold sores.. i had suffered with recurring shingles since 1964 at that time due to stress brought on by nasty divorce and battering. wasn't allowed to go to dr during this period of time all shingles were on face, ear to ear and up sinus wall. there was nothing anyone could due to help until i found L-LYSINE 500 MG. taken 4 x day it reduced the pain and length of outbreak, also found the more wheat products i consumed made it worse as that reduces the lysine level in the body. the next thing i found in the mid 80s was ice, you rub an ice cube over the outbreak area as soon as it manifests and you rub the ice until it burns like on fire. this stops the viral infection quickly and sends it back to where it sleeps when not active.
it either stops and clears within 24 hours or reduces the outbreak from minimal to nothing within the next few days. but i have always taken the lysine 4 x a day no matter what to make sure the lysine level is high enough to keep the shingles at bay, and you should reduce the stress level you may have which also helps. now that i am retired (a tax accountant) my stress is only that at home with an ageing family member and i still can get an outbreak, i never go anywhere for more than a day without extra lysine in the purse for this just in case moments. make sure if you feel outbreak coming, you up the dose and take 2 pills of 500mg 4 x a day for 2 days then go back to the 1 pill 4x a day and ice the infected area at least 2 x a day 3 is sometimes better. my doctor loves this program and recommends to others but of course they all want to give you pain meds or shingles relief pills, none have ever worked on me. this is the only regimen that i have found to either control it, slow it down and or get over it quickly with minimal discomfort . and L-Lysine is cheap and you probably have ice cubes in the freezer. its what i call alternative medicine. by the way, my shingles after all these years only outbreak now around or in the nose and near the lips center up or down no longer ear to ear and up into the sinus cavity. instead of 4 or more outbreaks a year its down to maybe 2. hope this is as helpful as it is easy and not costly.
Percocet worked for me.
And rubbing it with Vicks vapor rub.
Hi, RL, Zovirax cream should do the trick. I would think that the Valtrex ~ two 500 mg. tablets once a day ~ the dose for treating active shingles would work. If you have not been on your Valtrex for ten (10) days, the meds are stilling working. At this point you should be close to the window of 10 days for the active virus to stop. Since you were given everything but the kitchen sink for treatment of your episode, you should be feeling better and the redness, fever, and itching should be going away as you make it to day ten. How about you ask your doctor about Amitriptylene 75 mg. morning and evening for neuropathic pain - the gabapentine is used for this as well, but may not be working for your burning pain. All the very best to you.
