If you take the valtrex faithfully, it will shorten the course of the disease considerably. Shingles can last 6 weeks if not treated, so shortening it can be a week or two. Did your dr order pain meds for you? If you don't have pain medications, and it gets bad that ibuprofen or aleve won't help, go to the er. You should be on them. You should also call an opthamologist and make an appointment to see him next week. Shingles around the eye can cause its own problems. Blindness is one of them.
Going to take upwards of a week to get resolution using Valtrex. Neurontin is often used for shingle pain. Might want to ask doc about this.
