I was just prescribed gabapentin. I'm a bit leery about taking it. I am an active gym person. I'm experiencing hot flashes about 4-6 an hour. I can't sleep. I work out and eat well so the weight gain has me doubtful that this med is for me.
Gabapentin - Is this a steroid? I'm not sure why it makes people gain weight?

Hi I am new in this site. I thought I can share my experience with gabapentin. I started more than a year ago, and I started to gain weight almost immediately. I am very active, exercise almost every day and I am very careful with what I eat ( almost zero sugar and low carbs) despite that I kept on gaining weight. I did help me at first with fibromyalgia pain, but now it seems like my body got used to it. The withdrawal is horrible, you have to do it little by little. I wish I had read this comments before I started to take it. My advice is stay away from it. No matter how healthy you eat or the amount of exercise you do, you will still gain weight. The other thing is that it mess up your brain. Your short term memory is affected. I keep forgetting words in middle of the conversation is horrible.
Is Gabapentin a steroid?
No gabapentin is for nerve pain & estrogenis for menopause. ( Hot Flashes ). Why was you put on gabapentin? This might be side effects you are having. When I started Gab. I had some side effect they only lasted a few weeks. I wouldn't stop my Gab. it has done wonders for my nerve damage pain.
I have been having hot flashes, headaches, insomnia for a while. Finally went to a Dr and that's what she prescribed.
No its not a steroid, far from it. No one is sure why people gain weight on it, but you can control it if you watch your weight and do a little more exercise. It has helped my fibro immensely. I think if I was having menopause hot flashes again, I'd do what I did before, go on estrogen.
Estrogen instead of Gabapentin? What's the difference between the two?
Also does it make you drowsy?
estrogen makes you feel better. The natural lack of it is what causes the symptoms. Docs aren't offering it because of the risk of breast cancer.
I appreciate your input. I'm ok with whatever gets me right. I work hard to maintain my weight (I'm at the gym no less then 4 times weekly) and I just don't want a drug holding me back.
I did take it yesterday evening and I was ok. We shall see how this plays out
Breast cancer runs in my family. Probably why I wasn't offered hormones
