Did it help you lose or gain more weight? The reviewer seemed to have gained weight with other pain med regiments. Did Cymbalta add to the problem or was there a significant drop or change in weight? Very curious. I am having problems with the added weight as a side effect of necessary medications. Thanks!
Did Cymbalta have any effect on your weight?

I gained 40 pounds on Cymbalta. It was for the nerve pain but also acted for depression. It is a good drug for the pain but to gain 40 pounds I think I now have a bigger problem. The weight is extra hard to lose because I can't move around as most people do. I just had back surgery but am in as much pain after the surgery as before. I can't carry this weight and don't know what to do.
I gained 20 pounds on Cymbalta over six months and then my weight stabilized. I have been taking the drug for two years for nerve pain. My original dose was 60 mg/day, but my doctor and I discovered 30 mg does the job just as well. Now I take 15 mg daily and 99% of my symptoms are gone (as opposed to 100% on 30 mg). Truly, it has given me my life back. Of course, the weight gain is no fun though. I have always been underweight at 95 lbs, and could eat anything, not workout, and not gain any weight. On the drug, I maxed out at 112 (which isn't too terrible, but enough to make my body pretty different--20 pounds of pure fat added to a small frame is no good). There was a brief time last Spring, though, that I got back to 100 pounds while I was going through an emotional period. But the weight only stayed off for a few months and then returned. That is when I cut the dose from 30 to 15 mg to see if that would help.
I lost two pounds, but no more. So, a month ago, I realized I needed to actively try to lose the weight. I started dieting and exercising and have steadily lost a pound a week for the last four weeks. I am down to 108. Four pounds in four weeks might not seem like a lot, but my body looks more like old self already, so I am pleased. I am also relieved that the weight is coming off. I'm hopeful the lower dose is having less of an effect on my weight, but I simply need to put the work in to lose the weight I gained on the higher dose. At the end of the day, I'm thankful the experience forced me to develop some discipline, and to start living a healthier lifestyle. It's been rewarding, and for the first time in my life I am not just skinny, but actually getting in shape. That's my experience. But how the drug will affect you is another story. It sounds trite, but everyone is different, and I have read stories of Cymbalta causing weight loss. It is technically classed as weight neutral by doctors. I will say from the reading in the forums I have done, it seems like the lighter the person to start with, the more likely there will be some weight gain. But that is pure speculation. Since the drug has the potential to do a lot of good, I think it is worth trying. If weight gain is a concern, finding the lowest effective dose and being intentional about diet and exercise can help mitigate it. Good luck!
Unfortunately I have gained a lot of weight on cymbalta - about 65lbs. I have been working my tail off for almost 2 years to get it off and I have only lost 30lbs and that happened in the first year. For over a year I have been stuck at the same weight. is so incredibly frustrating. I work out 5-6x per week doing HIIT and strength training and my nutrition is excellent (I have seen 2 different nutritionist and gave them access to my nutrition diary and they could find very little wrong with the way that I'm eating). Unfortunately I can't get off the Cymbalta because it does keep my anxiety and depression at bay although I am also extremely fatigued and never wake up in the morning feeling refreshed even after a full night of sleep. I just have no idea what to do anymore. My doctor had suggested a while back to add well Butrans to see if it would counteract the difficulty in losing weight but I'm just afraid to add another medication
I have been on cymbalta for 2 months and with a very healthy and controlled vegan diet have lost weight and have really noticed a decrease in appetite. I can really notice the change in my body and its chemistry as I was on fluoxetine previous to this, starting off as a very slim frame with a reasonably healthy vegan diet and still gained 42 pounds. So for ME this is definitely working better. Sleep has improved from little at night and constant in day to a reasonable balanced arrangement. Fatigue has lifted a bit, but I am weak; however this is hard to tell whether it is due to sever depression or meds. WARNING: DO NOT MISS DOSES. I misplaced my drugs when away from home and missed 3 days worth of doses and my withdrawal effects were horrendous (I'm on 60mg) and ended up in hospital with severe abdominal pain. Good luck everyone and best wishes.
I started taking Cymbalta 30mg for 1 week then 60mg thereafter for depression/anxiety. I also take Wellbutrin 300mg and have for many years. The cymbalta has been awesome. Haven't felt this good in years. I've been on it now for 1 month and have lost 8 lbs! Maybe it's the combo of the two but I'm thrilled! My appetite is definitely lower. I did experience some nausea first few days. Also feel sleepy in the afternoon but that's the only difference.
Quite frankly, I lost 50 pounds in about a year because the side effects of Cymbalta made me so sick. I am still losing weight because I cannot discontinue Cymbalta. The withdrawal is HORRIBLE and I never make it through the complete withdrawal because I become suicidal.
I've been on it for a month and am losing weight. I've prob lost 7 lbs. my appetite is not always the greatest so that's prob why.
I have also notice increase of hot flashes sweating I loss weight I take off the shelf menosense for menopause helps alot
Hi DK,,,
I was on it for a few years for back pain and I didn't gain.
It's considered a weight neutral drug.
It's hard to quantify because it's thought around 1% gained which could be a result of the enjoying food again. Perhaps socialization because the found enjoyment in going out with people.
Of the 2% that lost it may be that they were becoming more active again and enjoying life or their metabolism increased.
Now Seroquel and Remeron ! Big time weight gain. I broke my ankle trying to get to the refrigerator to eat at 4am. I was taking it for sleep but I couldn't sleep because I was too hungry!
Cymbalta is good. Wellbutrin reportedly have people losing weight .
Good luck with whatever you try.
Appreciate all the comments. Recently prescribed Cymbalta for "anxiety" in combination with other anxiety meds. Told Doctor I wasn't interested in weight gain because of HORRiBLE experience with Seroquel--(see first comment in this string) went from 125 to 180lbs in a couple months--and they wondered why I was feeling depressed??? Sounds like Cymbalta could go either way, but I'd rather not take a chance.
I have been taking Cymbalta for a full week now. It has indeed helped my pain from fibromylagia, however I have lost an overwhelming 13 lbs since starting. I have not had an appetite, I have felt strong sense of nausea and have been battling loose bowels. It scares me to admit that the side effects have been greater than what I expected. However, the relief from the pain has given me great hope that perhaps once the medication has settled in my body the side effects will regulate.
Hi I've been on cymbalta for a few months and I have absolutely no appetite and no hunger cues my stomach doesn't growl nor cramp so I just really forget to eat til I notice my blood sugar drop.I've lost about ten pounds but I'm really over weight 5'5 296 pounds . My main problem is I tend to gag when I yawn. But it really works for my nerve pain and it's gotten me off the narcotic pain meds
I put on weight around the time I was put on anti depressants. Whatever exercise I did, there was no reduction. I'd put on about10 to 15kg. The only thing I noticed that was different from my lifestyle was the inclusion of Zoloft n then the switch to cymbalta. Now I'm trying to ignore my eating instincts n taking garcinia cambogia.it's helping me lose my tummy. I just need to go back to my normal self. In all my 61yrs I had never put on so much weight 70+kg. The biggest I ever got was 64kg.
I've gained 7 lbs. in 8 years but I am 62 and not a lot of excersise. If you don't rigorously excersise it will put weight on
I've been on cymbalta for about 6 months now , 60 mg in my case and I take it for general anxiety disorder. In my case it definetely contributes to weight loss rather than weight gain. Mostly it really speeds up your metabolism so for me it works a bit like a detox , you know the story any meal you eat you go toilet straight away. Previously I had problems maintaining the weight I wanted and eating the foods I enjoy for example mcdonalds immediately caused me to gain a bit of weight. Now I eat mcdonalds around 3 times a week and other fast foods on top of that and surprisingly my weight never jumps up but goes down and the less of the the unhealthy goods the more weight you loose.
I've been on cymbalta for 3 years and have gained 40 pounds!! I'm more depressed than ever and want to stop taking it. I've never been this fat!
