Did it help you lose or gain more weight? The reviewer seemed to have gained weight with other pain med regiments. Did Cymbalta add to the problem or was there a significant drop or change in weight? Very curious. I am having problems with the added weight as a side effect of necessary medications. Thanks!
Did Cymbalta have any effect on your weight?

Hello group
Today was my first day taking Cymbalta 60 mg for arthritis and for anxiety out and mood stabilizer today I kind of felt a sense of calm already I’m extremely sensitive to medicine before that I was taking Zoloft and my doctor thinks Cymbalta should be much much better so I’m super happy Tim bark on this journey today my appetite was barely there and I felt a little groggy but made it to work and back and have been feeling mellow all day hope this feeling continues everyone wish me luck
Love& greetings from California
I have only been on Cymbalta one day so far. 30mg for major depressive disorder and pain. My Dr is planning to up the dosage in 2wks and again 2wks after that if required.
I was on it many years ago and it caused around 10kg of weight gain quite quickly so I changed to another anto depressant.
All I have noticed this time is some heart palpitations so far. Has anyone else experienced this?
A little weight loss would be appreciated, but as long as it does it's job I'll be happy :)
I have never had any problems with my weight; even after having 5 children. I gained over 80 pounds during the 10+ years I’ve been taking Cymbalta. I also had multiple horrible side effects and I’ve been miserable the whole time. I’ve tapered slowly down to 1 mg and I’m already losing the weight. I no longer look or feel like I’m pregnant. The side effects are finally gone and I’m slowly getting my life back. I can’t wait to be completely off Cymbalta and I will never take another medication like it.
I have been on Cymbalta for fibromyalgia for over 5 years with no weight gain issue.
I was on Cymbalta 14 years. Tried several times to taper off ( but got suicidal) My doctor and I planned a slow 6 month reduction.
I had to get off of it, I gained 53 pounds and never ever gained weight or dieted in my life.
I used a trainer 3 times a week, walked 50 miles a week and never even dropped 1 pound.
The weight caused trouble in my back, and all the crazy exercise damaged my knees and neck. Four surgeries later in a year to correct all the over exercise. I was exhausted ( exerciseing is suppose to help..nope)
I hated myself and my brain just didn’t work right.
It took 6 months, and yes withdrawal even doing slowly, but manageable. My last 20mg was 2 weeks ago.
I was never a foodie person (normal for me before Cymbalta). I eat only healthy fresh food. No meat.
I am hoping to see some weight loss soon. I don’t even recognize myself. My energy is at a high level which I haven’t in years. I still have insomnia but working on that.
Never again. My fibromyalgia will just have to be dealt with in a non drug way.
Hi all,
I've been on cymbalta 30mg for a month now and have lost a stone (14lbs). I would put this down to a complete lack of appetite and daily nausea and diarhea. Don't mind the weight loss though
When I started taking Cymbalta I was a size 6. Now four years later I'm in a 14.
I took it for 4 months. Was a size 5/6. Now a size 14/16. Took it in 2016 and still haven't been able to loose the weight. One of the worth mistakes of my LIFE!!!
I just had to chime in here, I know this thread has been going for awhile, but... I have to say that Cymbalta has just been awful. I read the side effect profile: Possible weight loss, possible fatigue, this and that. I started in March 2018 and it is now July 2018 - started at 158lbs and have ZOOMED up to 178 - the heaviest I have ever been! I am STARVING all the time, craving sweets and carbs, finish eating a meal and am STARVING again in an hour. And it is something I absolutely can't control - even to the point of getting up in the middle of the night to eat and the very second I wake up, I am STARVING. The first month, had such horrendous lower GI problems but I pushed through becuz I really wanted to see if it would help. My Dr put me on it for chronic fatigue syndrome with the thought that the boost in serotonin would equal more energy for me, but it has had the complete opposite effect.
I just started weaning myself off and am hoping against hope that my appetite will settle down. Even when I think of eating something healthy, I get nauseated. What the heck happened here? I am so upset as my son's wedding is next weekend and I have gone from a size 10-12 to now a size 14 looks like a sausage squeezed into its casing. I am sooo mad. I gave it a good 4 months and I have had it. Didn't get ANY positive effects and am way worse off. I am happy for those that have had good outcomes (and a bit jealous), but this drug has completely been a train wreck for me.
Oh and forgot to mention this "blessing" - I have been coughing and coughing since I started taking it. Didn't put two and two together until just recently - thought maybe I had springtime allergies, although I never have been before. So just a "great" response for me all the way around. Yayyyy
oh yes. when I was on it I gained 20lbs. I was also on prozac at the same time and got serotonin syndrome. it was horrible.
Hi,
I've experienced weight loss with duloxetine (30g 1x day, the smallest dose i guess), 8kg in 6 months and still losing. But then i have history with eating disorders so it's hard to be fully impartial. I don't have the impression that it had an effect on my appetite, but more an enhancement of my metabolism. Daily calories incomes and physical activity hasn't change before/while this treatment. I haven't discuss this with my doctor, being happy with this weight loss and so I don't want him to stop it ( eating disorders saying hello now).
Hi, the name of this drug in the UK is Duloxetine and I have been on it for approximately 6 weeks for nerve pain caused by peripheral neuropathy owing to. 20 yrs of high morning blood sugars caused by diabetes. In the first five weeks the dose has been, 30 mg per day and I have lost 43 lbs in body fat. I have now had the dose increased to 60 mg per day and in the last three days I have lost another 12 lbs. I was huge six weeks ago and I'm happy with the results already esspecially as I cannot excersize very much owing to The fact history of 30 dvts in my legs and five PEs in my lungs. I just don't understand why so many others are gaining weight.
I gained 40-50lbs in 4 months and can't get it off! Stopped taking it about 5 months. It didn't work. Made me more depressed. Wouldn't recommend it!
I have been on cymbalta for a week and I have lost a total of 14lbs I know everybody body is different but this is my experience and I have no appetite nor do I a feeling of hunger
Cymbalta did have a significant impact on my weight; Although, I do have to say it worked the best for my anxiety/ mild depression / OCD. Nothing has worked quite as well.
I gained 40 pounds over the course of 1.5 years, but when taken off of Cymbalta and placed on 20mg of Celexa, I lost 12 lbs in the 1st 3 weeks. To be honest, I contemplate being heavy and happy vs. flat and thinner. I miss the Cymbalta.
I have been on Cymbalta now for about 7 years. Originally I started on the name brand. In the first 6 months of taking it I lost about 10 pounds and held steady for 4 years. Initially my appetite decreased significantly. I would eat for about 3-4 minutes and suddenly lose the desire to eat and feel full. After about 4 years the weight started to creep back on. My appetite returned to normal. By year 5 I had gained about 4-5 pounds, year 6 another 5, now at the year 7 I am 17 pounds heavier than I was pre-Cymbalta and it keeps creeping up even though I am not overeating and I exercise regularly. I am offically overweight.
Now I did switch to generic around year 5. My insurance switched to Kaiser and they refused to pay for name brand. I am not sure I can blame the generic for the weight gain or whether it is an issue of time. Cymbalta and generic version had been the best antidepressant (I've tried about all of them) in terms of my mood, energy level, lower sexual side effects. But here I am again struggling endlessly with the weight gain I battle with every antidepressant. I tried Wellbutrin, it did nothing for my depression although weight gain was not an issue. I even used in conjuction with Cymbalta and did see a slight decrease in weight, however Wellbutrin tended to make me weepy. So that one is out...
It feels hopeless in a lot of ways. I am the type whose depression is ever present and I will likely need an antidepressant for my entire life to feel ok. I feel like I am doomed to forever deal with the negative side effects of these medications. I don't have a good answer. All of the research done on these meds are short term. They do not look at those of us who take the medication for 5 year or even decades. They don't care to spend that money on research long-term. No benefit to pharma.
Does anyone have suggestions for this? Has anyone had success managing their weight on antidepressants with very long-term use?
The liver processes this medication slowly. Bike decreases from the liver. Your digestive system slows tremendously. I went off it and my bowels were so more frequent and normal. Unfortunately I need Cymbalta. It works the best for my depression. Sucks it changes the metabolism so darn much. I will try and exercise watch diet. No eating past 8:00 pm. Eat more fiber. At least I am myself and can function.
Have any of you ever considered that your weight gain was due to something else? Menopause, perhaps?
