I have been experiencing chronic muscle pain in my arms, legs, and back for a period of time that might correlate with my time using trazodone.
Can Trazodone cause chronic muscle ache/pain/fatique?

Are there any studies/data that detail how commonly the above issue occurs?

I started about a month ago at 50 mg and took as needed. I recently upped my dose to 75 and 5 days later noticed hip and back pain, and now the back of my legs ache. So this has been going on for over a week. Found this thread and it makes sense. Stopped taking it yesterday. For those of you that took it short term and stopped it, how long did your side effects take to go away?
I am switching from trazodone to amitriptyline to help me sleep. It is very difficult to do because nothing helps me sleep like trazodone does. I have had 2 weeks of hardly any sleep... but i am persevering because i am tired of the trazodone pain.
I now take 30 mg amitriptyline at 6 pm and it has helped me sleep. If i take it any later, i wake up feeling extremely drowsy like i am walking under water. I have just started this regime and will let you all know if it is helping. I am terrified to go back on trazodone. I have been taking it for 20 years and for 20 years i thought i had fibromyalgia... I will now find out if that was the case... it is too early to tell right now.
I’ve been taking Trazodone for 3 years for anxiety and insomnia. It did an amazing job of controlling these issues but the pain in my legs is so intense that I recently decided to stop taking the drug. The pain is decreasing but I’m back to feeling anxious and having trouble sleeping at night. Honestly, it’s worth it though to get rid of the pain that was taking over my legs.
How are you feeling now? How long did it take for this to subside because I’m on the same boat
I have just started this drug, a nd I am also having joint an d and muscle pain
I just tried Trazodone 50 mg for the first time last night to help with my insomnia. I had not looked at any possible side effects because sometimes I think I might imagine I have them once I know what they are. All night I was feeling very uncomfortable and achy to the point that it interfered with sleep altogether, which I have not experienced before. I looked up some side effects this morning, found this post and realized it was most likely caused by the Trazodone. It was also quite obvious because this is the only thing I changed about my routine. Not everyone experiences side effects or the same ones, but I definitely was experiencing aching in my muscles and just in general, so I think it's safe to say that if you weren't experiencing this before Trazodone, it may very well be what's causing it.
I'm so glad I found this site. I quit smoking 3 months ago and suffered from insomnia almost immediately, and was getting at best 2 hours of sleep nightly. I started taking Trazodone 25 mg and associated the muscle aches to withdrawal. I then caught a cold, and took NyQuil at night and didn't want to take the Trazodone with it so I stopped, and the pains disappeared. When my cold resolved I began taking the Trazodone again, and all the pains have returned. Does anyone else get a headache? Not sure if it's related, but I'm noticing a pretty consistent headache on awakening which ranges from mild to severe.
I have been on trazodone for 1 year.
It was prescribed for me due to insomnia. I noticed that I have started having severe pain in my knees and even seen my family doctor. He told me to take Ibuprofen and come back In 2 weeks and if it wasn’t better would give me a shot in my knee. The pain was so bad that I could barely make it out of bed or climb the stairs to do my job.
I had ran out of trazodone for about a week and noticed that my knees was better but had not connected the dots yet. I called my daughter who Is a RN and told her I had million dollar knees !!!
Was I happy happy
I have been on trazodone for a week and the past 2 days have woken up to severe joint pain and stiffness as well. I am wondering if this will go away after time as it is very difficult to wake up having to take ibuprofen just to get out of bed and walk. I also experience like a restless leg syndrome about 30 minutes after taking it at night, which is very uncomfortable. Anyone???
I believe Trazadone causes muscle pain... and that is because you go through withdrawal symptoms if it is not in your body all the time. I take it at night and have severe pain through the day, and if I take some more during the day, the pain goes away. However, it also makes me very tired so I cannot take it during the day. The best is to get off of it completely.
Unfortunately it's hard to find a sleeping medication that works as well and also one that doctors don't mind prescribing on a long-term basis.
I was perscribed Trazodone for possible Fibromyalgia. After 2 weeks I have general joint pain and can often hardly make it up the stairs.
For me, Trazodone causes pretty severe joint pain (shoulders, hips) and muscle stiffness to the point where it's difficult to get up out of bed (painful) in the morning. It's very painful to begin walking on my feet, and I just generally feel like I've been run over by a car. Trazodone also makes me INCREDIBLY groggy the next morning. Very difficult to get up and I sleep through alarms, not even hearing them.
It takes me about 2 hours in the morning to wake myself up, get moving a bit so I can speak clearly, begin thinking more clearly, and walk a little less stiffly. On a really bad day, it could take 1/2 the day of moving around, stretching, massaging my limbs, etc. before I can move around normally. By 5pm I feel almost normal with much less pain and stiffness. I'm able to cook dinner and put on a meal without much pain or stiffness.
For all those reasons, I find it a very inconvenient drug if I'm working full time and need to keep to an 8-5 schedule or do any travel for business. It's effects are too strong and last too long to be a viable solution for a busy working professional.
Having said that, I do not recommend Ambien at all and feel it should be banned from use in the US.
I just tried one dose for sleep and the last few days have had severe joint pain and stiffness to the point I thought I had arthritis all the sudden. I also still feel groggy and not myself after 2 days. Maybe its a councidence??
Cmbell: if you think it’s a coincidence, by all means keep taking it. I stopped taking it in August 2017 and have had NO joint pain or morning stiffness since. But again, have at it, if it’s working for you. As with all medications, it effects everyone differently.
I know that it was back in 2010 that your posted your question. I hope you still are looking for answers.
I have been using Trazodone for about 3 and 1/2 years. I began to have SEVERE lower back pain shortly after commencing use of it. I, however, (strangely enough), still find that 300mgs of Trazodone helps to reduce my pain. Crazy, yes?
If you do some research on the negative effects of this medication, you will read that they include muscle pain.
I hope you stopped using it and are, now, feeling MUCH better!

I have severe nerve pain all over from trazodone. After starting Trazodone, I got fibromyalgia nerve pain... now that I am going off Traz the pain is really bad. Unfortunately Traz will help the pain... so if you take it, you have to take it all day because withdrawal during the day causes pain.
I just want to see if my pain goes away after going off of it.
Hello printer1. Just to add my thoughts to your question. I was on trazodone for several years and truth be told, I didn't have any aches and pains. I took it at night to help me sleep. So sorry, can't say I have experienced what you've been going through. Wishing you the best, pledge
I also take 200mg Trazodone for sleep, and I do have Fibromyalgia, IBS-C, Interstitial Cystitis and a possible autoimmune disorder. I can say that the symptoms you relate are from my other disorders and not Trazodone.
Trazodone used in divided doses thoughout the day has been helpful with the pain I suffer from Fibromyalgia.
That is probably because your body needs trazodone to get rid of the pain which is caused when trazodone leaves your body and you are going through a daily withdrawal...
i've been taking trazodone 50mg to 100mg for almost a year now i can't say i have had anymore ache and pains than usual but the fatigue and sleepiness is a problem and if you have CTS or fibromyalgia or depression those will also sometimes make you feel tired and sleepy too. maybe you should talk with you doctor about how you are feeling and the two of you decide if it's the medication or something else. missy
I found this information that adresses your problem.
"most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome when using Trazodone:
Blurred vision; constipation; decreased appetite; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; general body discomfort; headache; incoordination; light-headedness; muscle aches/pains; nausea; nervousness; sleeplessness; stomach pain; stuffy nose; swelling of the skin; tiredness; tremors."
I reviewed my medial notes and I started to see my doctor's much more frequently for muscle and bone pain... this went on for 3.5 years and I have to say that many of these side effects were resolved when I discontinued trazodone.
Thanks so very much for the information! Those are the exact symptoms that I have. Time for me to taper off of Trazodone as it is destroying me! I don't, however, get headaches or nausea, itsmetoo2. Thank you again! I seriously must get off of this medication. As I write I am dizzy, have blurred vision, have horrendous muscle aches and pains, and am feeling very nervous! I am exhausted, as well!
