I have been taking Dexilant for 5 days and it has been doing wonders for my GERD that has been brought on by my 6 week battle with what the Drs. think is a upper respitory virus. Then tonight I unexpectedly had a GERD coughing spell. What can bring this on when the Dexilant was doing such a good job.
Can GERD flare up even when taking Dexilant?

Hi there!
It sounds like your GERD is causing some bronchial problems..I was diagnosed in Feb w/ asthma & didn't even know I had GERD ..after a endoscopy from GI Dr I was told I had GERD & put on dexilant 60 mg, Prilosec 20 mg& Zantac 300 mg per day..I was sooo sick w/ nausea, lost weight cause I couldn't eat anything without it burning me up from my tummy to my throat! it is what caused my asthma..After mos of this I got a 2nd opinion & turns out my dr totally missed a HUGE hiatal hernia which was causing all of this!!! I'm currently 5 wks post op( hiatal hernia repair, nissen fundoplication reflux surgery) & I'm feeling sooo much better!Ive really been sick off & on for sometime & never knew it was all related to hernia..research this & see if you may find some answers .Im off all of my reflux meds now:) good luck hope this helps

Oh my goodness, Shiela, it sounds wonderful to hear that someone has had that procedure done and is happy with it. I am speaking of the Nissen Fundoplication Reflux Surgery. I am perplexed as to why more doctors do not suggest this minor procedure rather than subject us to the horrible PPI medications that have caused me so much grief. Ended up in the hospital with a breathing problem (shortness of breath) along with other problems such as urinary tract infection, throat infections, sinus infections, etc. All of this is due to the PPI's... yes, it felt so good for 12 years to eat whatever I wanted but then it suddenly took it's toll on my body. My doctor has suggested this procedure you speak of although there is a newer one coming along but I think I am ready to have it done after hearing your statement.
Thank you so much for sharing this information.

I take dexilant 60 mg and 300 mg of Zantac. I too have a hiatal hernia, but my GI said it wouldn't be worth it to fix. I wonder why? Maybe what I need is surgery to fix the "flap" separating my esophagus and stomach.
I would like to know from Anonymous if your doctor has ever told you why the procedure to fix the hiatal hernia would not work? I am seriously thinking of having that done but am concerned as to whether it will be a success... have heard in most cases it is not. The PPI's have had a very bad affect on me. Please let me know the above?
Thanks much,
Aquarius Anne
