... without treatment? I had a benign cyst removed from my throat 7 years ago and this triggered my burning tongue syndrome. What hell! I've been to countless dentists, ENTS, oral surgeons, GPs and NONE of them know what to do. I've had my teeth ground-down, capped and night guarded, all to no avail. This site helps me feel I'm not so alone and suffering in silence. I can't stand to think I will live with this the rest of my life. Is it possible for it to just dissappear and resolve on its own? Thanks all
Burning Mouth Syndrome - I've had BMS for seven years. Has anyone had this go away on its own?

Totally with you. Mine started 4 years ago and affects my ears, nose and eyes as well.Started after a year of botched dental treatment and finally some bad root canal treatment. Despite around 40% of other suffering people have told me they associate it with dental treatment the clinicians say cant be. I was a drugs clinician and if I had 0% solutions and yet 40% of patients said the same thing I think I might get off my high horse and listen !! Doesn't help I have Flu at the moment. I send you all my TLC & it would be nice to hear back from you. Mike xx
I have successfully fast treated my BMS with EcoDenta refreshing oral care foam with mint oil and natural betaine. I had BMS for two years, mouth quarts procedure was the most effective until I found this oral care foam. From the first spray I felt relief and after few days spraying BMS was gone and never came back. Hope this helps you also!
I have managed to get rid of my BMS, I looked at what times it was worse and discovered that tomatoes, peppers and caffeine seemed to make worse. I have taken these out of my diet (regrettably as they all were favourites of mine) and the problem has gone away.
Thank you so much for sharing this information! I will try it right away!
what is mouth quarts procedure?
I have successfully treated my bms with Oregano oil. I had a white fuzz on my tongue, my mouth felt permanently dry and my tongue and the roof of my mouth were really sore, particularly the little piece of skin between my 2 front teeth randomly! Oregano oil is really potent stuff so you only need a couple of drops in a couple of inches of water. It immediately gives relief. I did this in conjunction with a really strict no sugar diet and within 2 months it was gone. I keep thinking I ought to create some sort of website with everything I did to get rid of it, but I wouldn't know where to start! Hope this helps!
Where did you buy the oregano oil? Tia!!
I, too, had a benign cyst removed from my vocal area about 3 yrs ago. I have BMS, and a white film on my tongue and the tongue tends to be dry at times. I also had 2 bone graft/tooth removal within that time, so a double whammy. Also post menopausal. I signed up for BMS group on fb and there's plenty of info/responses on there to keep a person busy enough to not think about things. Many of us have a white film that our teams of experts declare is not candida. In my case they have told me to chalk it up to the antibiotics. On the BMS fb site many are women, pre-menoausal/post menopausal, have white film that isn't thrush, and had dental surgery. Doctors don't seem to know what to to about it, the neurologists do test for bms, but like other things - it's all a bunch of scratching of the head. The funny thing is - the dentist and a CCN told me it is thrush. The dentist gave me fluconazole, which didn't work.
My pcp gave me nystatin - which, also, didn't work. Some research says after 6-7 yrs it just goes away, but I see that a lot of people have this longer.
No, not without treatment. But yes, with treatment my burning mouth syndrome finally stopped after several years and treatment with orally disintegrating Clonazepam twice daily. I took this for about a year I think and the BMS did not bother me while on it. Then I stopped it unintentionally when I ran out. I realized that the BMS didn't come back so I stayed off of it. No more burning mouth syndrome. And it's been almost a year! There is hope, though I suspect it may involve different meds for different people. But this worked for me.
Clonazepam also worked for me although in the UK you have to use the liquid clonazepam. It didn't get rid of it completely but it was a life saver for me along with low dose tramadol. I am currently free of it after feeling suicidal, it was the worse thing I have ever experienced, couldn't eat, drink or sleep and talking was out of the question.
It's really good to know that Clonazepam has worked for you. I only had a tooth extracted 4 days ago and the surgeon believes the anaesthetic may be causing the issue. Is that possible? Has anyone encounter this side effect and for it to wear off? I'll give it a few more weeks and if it's not better I'll go and see him again for further analysis. It's good to know though that you both have had success with your respective meds.
Why don't we all do some investigative work.
1) What procedures we have done to get to this point. E.g wisdom teeth removal etc
2) What medication do we use?
3) I take it we've all had our bloods taken? I.e vitamin b12 etc
4) I'm sure we can all rule out thrush?
Even if mine cures itself i'm going find a cure for this thing... a bit like Lorenzos oil!
I pray we all find peace and a cure!
Have you tried clonazepam or a low dose of tramadol? These were the two things which helped me and I tried lots of other stuff including, gabapentin, pregabalin, Difflam, oral morphine, mouthwashes, gels etc etc. I also used a numbing spray to give me temporary relief.
I've had BMS for about 4 years. It started all of a sudden so not particularly sure what set it off. I've been to specialists who put me on amitriptyline 5mg. It sort of help take the edge off. This week I had a tooth extracted and a day later the pain became a 10/10. When you think about it a tooth extraction should not be the reason we encounter the pain. However I do think the anaesthetic that was used could be the reason. The dosage is very heavy and goes through your system. I googled septocaine (the anaesthetic) side effects and the first thing that pops up is tongue pain and swelling. Is there a chance that the amount they use can stay in our blood stream for weeks, months, years?
I had similar problem, found to be low in B12, sorted this out, and with time, eased a lot. but went for dental procedure, and this started it back off,(not sure if it was stress, fear about going dentist) but dental specialist say mouth/teeth are fine, and so discharged me. also have pain in different teeth,as well as burning. feeling fed up!
Jane, I know what you mean. Nobody can understand what we are going through. My wife helps me as much as possible but I do feel for her seeing me in my state.
yes, have been upset this week, when Dr had notes from maxofacial dept? saying mouth/teeth all fine and cant see anything wrong (I asked them if it Bms or neuropathic and told no,mouth looks fine), so why am i in pain? makes me feel not normal! If keeps on will see Dr for amytryptyline,(although wary to take in case makes me drowsy) but have no options left, need some help to deal with pain, and dont think the stress with it helps. have anyone had burning/pain in gum/teeth? what other specialists know of this? neurologist or a pain clinic? and anyone have any positive advice with them? thanks Jayne.
I have burning mouth syndrome and had it for over 7 years it stared wen they took a tooth out , just have drink water
Has it resolved itself or are you still feeling the pain?
I completely cured myself from BMS by drinking Kombucha. It's a fermented tea that is a probiotic. It can be purchased at most any grocery store, health food store, and discount store. I know Target, Kroger/Dillons, and Walmart has it. At the suggestion of a friend who also suffered from BMS I tried the drink and it cured it within 2 weeks. That was 5 years ago. I've had a couple small flare ups in those 5 years and just a bottle or two of Kombucha and it went away.
Is this post 5 years old. ??? It's been 10 years for me. With no relief. I'll try anything.
I just posted the Kombucha cute 2 days ago. Just trying to help anyone out there that I can.
Hi I've been a BMS sufferer for almost 18 months i live in Australia like many here tried various remedy to no avail... the kombucca tea you tried was it black or green tea you tried... also could you tell me what dosage did you take ie: 1 cup a day or two... was that all you drank for the 2 weeks? Finally I've seen it in the supermarket in the bottles was that the kind you mean?
any help would be appreciated thanks
It is made from either green or black. I like GT brand. It’s organic and raw. I like ginger or cranberry flavored best but any will work and all of them taste good to me. I was warned to just drink a small amount until I knew how I would react as the gal that told me the kombucha cured her said she got a little loose stools drinking it. I didn’t have any reaction so drank a half bottle in one sitting the first day and the other half the next. Then I just drank an entire bottle after that. Like I said, I drank it for a week before I noticed it going away. Then I could tell a definite difference but kept drinking it for another week. I really want to know if this helps you.
My mouth was very dry and tongue was tingling. I didn't have bad breath at all, even when I woke up in the morning. My saliva was just like water, it was neither slippery nor smelly. I knew something was not right. I didn't have any good bacteria in my mouth. After reading this post, I purchased some Kombucha. I drank eight ounces of ginger Kombucha, organic and raw, and one Benadryl (for sinus pain on both sides of my nose) before going to bed last night and I got up only twice to drink water. My mouth did not feel like a desert in the middle of the night and my tongue was not tingly. When I woke up this morning, my saliva was slippery and stringy, which I haven't had in weeks, and had I had some morning breath, which is a little more normal. I ate a light breakfast and drank the other eight ounces still left in the bottle. My tongue is feeling tingly now, but my mouth doesn't feel as dry.
I think I have a sinus infection because both sides of my nose hurt and my head feels all congested. I didn't have any good bacteria to fight it off. Hopefully, the Kombucha will give my the good bacteria I need to fight off the infection.
What I learned from reading all the posts on BMS is that there are many causes and cures. Mine was from dental work. I went in to get a crown, #7 is the position of the tooth, replaced and my dentist asked if he could filed some of the chips from the front teeth down. When I agreed, he filed down about six teeth in the front instead of just the two front ones. This caused my bite to be off and molars were chipping and teeth are touching each other in wrong places.
The dental work and when I was placed on antibiotics when I didn't need to be caused BMS. I stopped the antibiotic in three days in because my mouth was so dry I couldn't stand it.
I pray and will continue to pray for all BMS sufferers. Please keep looking for a way out. I'm not sure if this is my way out, but there were some signs of improvement. I'll keep you posted. I will post on facebook also.
I have BMS... probably for the past 7 or 8 years now. I've had chronic pain issues in my life before, so I basically manage myself and with the assistance of my GP sometimes if the pain gets out of control and is getting me down. My biggest relief has been the hundred of tubes of Difflam mouth gel I discovered by trial and error. Mouthwash didn't really help. Chewing gum gave some relief but my jaw became too sore! I tried Alpha Lipoic at great expense. It seemed to help but maybe it was all in my mind as it came back. Yesterday I was buying plants at my local market. I came across a spicy oregano plant. I'm not a huge fan of chilli or hot food but the guy encourage me to try some. It was hot! But a peppery hot but hotter than rocket. And it sort of had this numbing effect with my BMS. So I bought it and now chew a leaf a few times a day, particularly in the afternoon when the discomfort builds to a crescendo.
This is obviously not a remedy. It's a treatment. I really empathise with you all out there. This is a lonely journey, as are all chronic pain journeys. I'm also about to undergo a five day Lignocaine infusion program. I'll report in if it helps. I'm sure the week in the fancy private hospital will anyway. No cooking or making school lunches or listening to kids argue will be like being in Bali! Good luck everyone.
Hi gonzo jen. I think I have emailed you sometime before. Wow, you were brave to have all your teeth grinded down. My BMS was so incredibly painful - living with it was hell. It took me a while to finally be prescribed Amitriptyline - 5 tablets of 10 mg a day. I always started in the afternoon and saved at lease two for the evening. No more than 5. It took a while to get into my system but it worked and that has what saved me from the terrible pain. I have always taken them because for me why change something that works. So for now it is Amitriptyline for me. Good Luck.
I've had a burning tongue for over a year and a half now. Finally decided to do some research and found out I wasn't crazy.
I've started a mega B vitamin complex a few months ago. No help. Saw where gabapentin was prescribed because they that it was a firm of neuropathy. I've been on 1600mgs a day for almost a year now and took half a year to get to that level.
Finally saw a message board where someone said B12 was a solution. I've been taking a butt load of sublingual B12 for over a month now! At same time started talking alpha lipoic acid at high doses each day. Probably in the neighborhood of 1600 mg a day. Then saw that most of these supplements have both the R and S versions in then. The claim is that only the stabilized R version is absorbed in the body. I'm finishing off the one original bottle and have to say that already I've felt an 80% healing already off the symptoms.
Read lots of negatives on gabapentin and was taking it for anxiety. Will ask doctor to let me wean off these slowly add I see there can be some bad withdrawals when you stop.
Take the R version of the Alpha Lipoic Acid and lots of B12 and see if that works for you as well.
Good luck and get better soon!
Hi to everyone who suffers from this awful condition,
I wanted to post because I wanted to share my experiences with BMS, which I have had for almost 5 years now. It started shortly after my mother died when I was 40 years old; it progressively got worse until I couldn't function and effectively take care of my family. It is so debilitating, and I was wanting my life to end. I finally found a doctor that would take me seriously, after all my doctors either dismissed me or diagnosed the cause incorrectly. I had been to primary doctors, neurologists, dentists, maxofacial, gynecologists, etc. I was told it was anxiety to heartburn, all wrong. Dr. Pati finally tested my hormone levels and all my intracellular vitamin levels. She found my B's all very low and progesterone was quite low, while estrogen was very high. Now, all of this could have been onset by the stress of my mother's death, I realize. But, anxiety itself was not the root...
it is what the anxiety and stress did to my body. I also changed my diet radically, following mostly a paleo diet. After trying everything from ALA to laser, to paxil to clonapin, I have found relief. Granted, it is not completely gone, but it is 90-95% better most days. I take sublingual b's because I wasn't absorbing them in my gut. It was not balanced correctly, also I am on bio-identical hormones, progesterone. I have my life back, and I just wanted to share if this may be something someone out there can relate to or help. I am not saying that all BMS has the same root cause; I know that is not true, but some of it may be caused by my situation. God Bless you all in this journey as you pray and search for answers. Don't lose hope and be your own advocate. And, if you are in Florida, please go to Dr. Sangeeta Pati. She changed my life.
I've had BMS for almost 7 years. Tried everything imaginable. 18 months ago I started on a course of clonazepam 0.5 mg x 2 a day. I am not sure if this has helped as it has been an incredibly slow almost unnoticed improvement. But finally I am getting some relief. The specialists name is Neil Savage from Brisbane. Google him. He has done studies on the condition. My BMS is not gone yet - but I am told it will go - but very slowly as I have had it so long. I can only suggest if you are new to the condition you seek specialist help early. I am not sure if this is what worked or if my stress levels have dropped somewhat. But my condition has definitely eased. Happy to answer any questions. Good luck. I hope you all find some relief soon.
I cannot find an e mail for Dr. Savage. Are you allowed to share it. I would love to share with him my experience with clonazepam.
Hi, I also was given clonazepam by a pain specialist although it was in liquid form, I leave it in my mouth for a few minutes then spit it out. The results were very good, I was able to increase the amount of times I used it each day and although it didn't go away it helped tremendously. I also use low dose tramadol for 2/3 days and currently that is working better. I very rarely suffer from it now but when it starts to rear it's ugly head I start the medication immediately. Oral clonazepam is available on the English NHS, it is very expensive.
clonazepam MUST have some wonderful side effect besides being prescribed for anxiety, panic attacks etc. I admit to having a mild degree of anxiety, but my symptoms came on SO SUDDENLY out of the blue after a cold virus, that I do NOT think anxiety related. The burning on tip of my tongue vanished after first dose..within 1/2 hour. Seriously. No doctor recommended it. I feel it is my duty to all fellow sufferers to contact Dr. Neil Savage in Brisbane to share my experiences. I so want us ALL to find a cure. It has not gone away, but can live with it ... cheerfully. I live in California, though British by birth.
Almost one year for me. No relief. I went to see a leader physician in BMS at NYU in New York City. I started Reiki and Klonopin really helps, but sadly, no cure. :(
It can start after a drop in hormones always worth considering especially in women who are going through the menopause.
Could you send the name of the doctor ? I'm in North Jersey and had it for a year and half
Hello everyone , I have had this for at least 15 years now after having all my top teeth pulled in one shot. I have been told that most likely caused nerve damage to my mouth and who knows when it will resolve or even if it will ever resolve. I have been put on any and every medication they can think of with varying success and no true success, UNTIL my daughter told me to try CBD oil capsules. Totally natural and available online. ( CBD oil comes in many forms I take the pills, but this week will be trying some spray as well) CBD comes from the hemp plant so although related to marijuana it does NOT have anything in it to get you high !! I am 68 years old and the world does not need a stoned gran wandering around . I HIGHLY recommend you to try it, the pills appear to be cheaper in the states then here in Canada, and I gather if you want to , you could actually grow your own, no laws anywhere against growing hemp. Good luck and please try this, I am sure you will not be disappointed!! Maureen
