... without treatment? I had a benign cyst removed from my throat 7 years ago and this triggered my burning tongue syndrome. What hell! I've been to countless dentists, ENTS, oral surgeons, GPs and NONE of them know what to do. I've had my teeth ground-down, capped and night guarded, all to no avail. This site helps me feel I'm not so alone and suffering in silence. I can't stand to think I will live with this the rest of my life. Is it possible for it to just dissappear and resolve on its own? Thanks all

I have had BMS for over 8 years and was professionally diagnosed in 2014. The doctor prescribed gabapentin which I took for over 2 years but I had no relief from the symptoms so I no longer take it. I have also tried various other treatments that were recommended but nothing seemed to help until my dentist prescribed a night guard for clenching which I am sure was caused by the discomfort of the BMS. I discovered that while wearing the night guard the burning sensation was completely gone so I started wearing it during the day to see if it helped and it was absolutely amazing!! I was told by a friend that you could order mouth guards online and they cost much less than getting them from the dentist. I searched around and found a website that sold a day guard which is much smaller than a night guard and made of a clear material similar to Invisalign. It has been an absolute "cure" for me as long as I wear the guard.
I do remove it when eating and drinking anything besides water but other than that I wear it at all times. I highly recommend trying this solution and I hope it works as well for you as it has for me.
Thank you for the info about the mouth guard! As a BMS sufferer myself, and having an 89 year old mother who has been suffering for years, I am going to order a mouth guard for her to see if it helps her. For me, I discovered that my burning mouth seems to have been caused by the small amount of black walnuts and tomatoes that I was putting on my daily salads. I was in anguish, like so many others have described, but when I quit eating those two things, my mouth returned to normal. I was amazed that such a small amount of walnuts and tomatoes could cause me so much misery. I am glad you found relief, and I will have my mom give your cure a try, as (much to my dismay) she was not overly willing to give up her walnuts and tomatoes!!
I find that eating certain foods does aggravate the burning but even avoiding those foods did not make it go away. I hope the mouth guard works for your mom because it has been an absolute miracle for me.
I am a 63 year old male diagnosed 8 years ago with BMS. I have discovered that the mouth guard works well. It is not practical in the day though so I kept looking for alternatives. I discovered that beta blockers for my blood pressure were aggravating the condition. I was able to get off of them with much exercise. By doing so the pain level went down from a 7 to a 3. Recently I discovered that 5htp drops the pain level within 30 minutes of taking it to a level 1 to 1.5. The pill lasts about 3 hours before symptoms begin to elevate. So I take it prn. I started the dosage at 50 mg and over time reduced it to 12.5 mg. When the dosage is too high it makes me foggy and sleepy. When I started being sleepy I dropped the dosage until I wasn't sleepy. So far this is the best remedy I have found.
Hi since my last post I have had some weeks where the condition has completely gone and other weeks where there has been a great improvement. One thing I have learnt is that when it does start to come back it has to be zapped immediately or it gets much worse. I still take tramadol low dosage , only one or two a day for 2/3days then one a day for about 5/6 days and it helps. then i stop. Otherwise I use oral clonazepam for swish and spit. I have seen a maxiofacial consultant and I have had an MRI scan of the brain, this is to rule out M.S. I am waiting for results. He did say you will have this for life and it's about controlling the pain. So will continue with the above medications, this is a terrible illness but thought I would post again to let people know I have had some relief even if it's not permanent cure.
I'm not sure if I can help. My burning is only my tongue, it feels like I burned it on food. I had trouble finding info on what it was and what to do. It doesn't happen often but I found the dose online and the Cayenne works. Maybe check with a health food store. Good Luck.
I've had burning mouth on and off for 3 hears
Been told it's my zinc level.
But I've just had a break through
with physio visit and 10mg of Amytrypline

Hi Jen, Do you eat walnuts in any form? Or tomatoes? I knew I was sensitive to tomatoes, so I ate them in moderation... even though I love them! But still, even when I went thru spells of omitting tomatoes completely from my diet, I still had burning mouth. It was so bad, it ruined a much-looked forward to vacation to Florida this past spring. Long story short... guess what I discovered... it was WALNUTS. Who ever would have believed it? When I stopped adding walnuts to my daily salads (and it's not like I put a lot on... maybe 2 or 3 T) my burning mouth went away. I mean, completely away. I felt like it was a miracle. I had gone to my doctor and my dentist... I had read up on "burning mouth" and I had taken a zillion supplements... all to zero avail. Once I figured out the walnut connection, I googled it. Turns out walnuts are high in linoleic acid, and lots of people have a sensitivity to it. Not a full-blown allergy, but a sensitivity.
The thing that struck me, was how few I was eating, and how lousy they made my life. I also read the ingredient lists on breads, and found out that walnuts are in some of the whole-grained breads. Brownberry Oatnut bread was also a regular part of my diet, so I stopped that as well. My mouth now is completely free of pain, weird bumps, stinging, all gone. I know not everybody has the same sensitivity, but maybe you could look into your diet for clues. I still am dumbfounded that the small amount of walnuts I was eating could have made my mouth so raw, and made me so miserable. Good luck in your search for answers!! And, if walnuts turn out to be the problem for you, please let me know!
Try vitamin e stick on your lips... I got it at walmart. I've had this 3 years and now it seems to be going away. I also started doing things to lessen depression. Like painting. I hope you find what work's for you. You are not alone.
I had this condition for over 2 years - so many different treatments - please to anyone whom suffers this horrible condition in Sydney NSW please see Dr Anastasia Georgiou and the good news is the only drug that worked for me is ENDEP 10 - now the condition is gone! Don't give up I know how much I went through and to add so many doctors do not know how to treat this horrible condition - you are not alone
.
It's hard to believe that it shows your answer was posted in Sept. of 2013 and I'm just not getting it. Thank you. Been suffering now going on 9 years. All I here is there is not cure. You just have to learn to deal with it. I won't go on and on about what bad shape I'm in now. Guess you could only imagine. Anyway I wrote down the Medicine you recommended. Will give this information to my doctor. Are you still cured? Thank you again.
Hi there, I have had BMS for about 5 years and following your comment I have been to see Dr Anastasia Georgiou, she has conducted some tests and I am going back in a month to discuss the results and a plan of action. However, she did suggest that taking ENDEP 10 could be the plan of action. Can you advise if you are still taking this medication and if it is still working for you? Also did you have any negative side affects from taking the ENDEP?
Hi, I've been suffering with burning tongue for several months, and it's so depressing. I've tried everything recommended with no relief. Doctors do not know how to heal it. I have to avoid anything with citric acid, spicy, minty toothpaste, mouth washes, chocolate, and all the food I love. Also NO alcohol of any kind. It's very depressing. I wish someone would help with a curing remedy.

Inbox me on facebook - I'm vickie mnis. I may be able to help.
I see there are various references to toothpaste. I was prescribed Duraphet some years ago. Has anyone else experience of this high chloride toothpaste ? When my BMS started it also effected my eyes, ears and nose. Anyone else had these related symptons.
My mouth had been burning for a long time so finally did some research and read that it is sometimes treated with capsicum. I didn't have any hot peppers in the house but I did have sweet Thai chili sauce so I figured it couldn't hurt. I put some sauce in a bowl and every time I passed it I rubbed some one the burning areas. It took a few days but the burning disappeared. It does recur from time to time so I just repeat this. Can't say it will work for you but it's worth a try and a cheap, non drug cure if it does work. Good luck
Contact me on facebook - I'm vickie mnis I have support groups I can you refer you to but also may be able to help identify a secondary cause of bms.

Hi
I've suffered with Burning Moutg Syndrome for about 2 years. At times I found it quite unbearable and it seemed to be taking over my whole life. All the enjoyment went out of eating & nobody could find a cause. GP just wanted to prescribe strong drugs, which would just give me side effects & could cause my mouth to be dry & burn even more.
Due to health reasons, I recently started following a gluten free diet and following a diet based on FODMAP. After just 3 weeks, I would say that my burning mouth has reduced by about 80% & I now feel healthier & happier than I have done in years. I still have a burning mouth, but hardly notice it now. It would certainly be worth trying this diet to reduce symptoms. Good luck-it worked for me. Please feel free to message me if you require further information.
I've been gluten free for 2 years but my BMS started badly a year ago, so for me i can't put it down to gluten, but glad your BMS has reduced :)
You are welcome to inbox me on facebook at vickie mnis. I want to let you know that I have seen a handful of specialists and finally found that it is a hiatal hernia that pushes acid upward and seeps through the tongue and up into the sinus area. Diet does assist but you need to know what foods precisely to avoid, you shouldn't eat after 5:00, drink 6 cups of water to get the acid out, prop pillows up at night so the flow of acid does not rise. Get on a prescription until it goes away and if it doesn't then have surgery to correct this.
I had Bms for about 6 months and like everybody saw my GP and and an Ent consultant but no one knew how to help me. I put myself on a really strict diet because certain foods main the pain worse and got more and more low and depressed. However, I found a cure for myself. I don't know if it will help anyone else, but it worked for me. Buy some Oregano oil from a health food shop and put 2 or 3 drops in a couple of inches of water and gargle 2 or 3 times a day with it. It is really strong stuff, so 2 or 3 drops is all you need and try not to swallow it. After a week of doing that my mouth was back to normal. From my experience, it happens when the nerves in your mouth are over stimulated by strong flavoured things like crisps for example that have msg in them. I have had the pain start again after eating crisps like this and a day or so gargleing with the oregano oil gets rid of it. I avoid those types of foods now. I hope this helps as it cured me. Try Valtrex Three days two 500 each day. Did Wonders for me
Hi, please do these two things they have helped me a lot 1.Get a liquid anti-histamine... i don't care that my oral specialist said it's not an allergy, the liquid anti-histamine works for me... i use chlorphenamine liquid anti-histamine from the chemist but i don't wish to take this all the time so i found out something else helps... 2. Braggs Raw Apple Cider Vinegar... you can buy it at a health food store or on Amazon... this helps greatly, i put a teaspoon in some water and i drink all day from my stainless steel water bottle.
Please, anyone with this condition do these two things... i couldn't stand it either before and was depressed and miserable, i found out about the Braggs Raw Apple Cider Vinegar (It has to be Raw) one evening after having some on my chips, because my mouth itchyness usually gets worse as the day goes on but this night it got better.
I've had this condition for a year and for a month now it has been fairly stable, i take the water with the raw apple cider vinegar everyday and when i feel it getting a little more itchy (usually before my period i noticed) I take the anti-histamine. Hope this helps.
Demoina, I will try anything that might help. I will call my doctor and see if she will prescribe the
anit-histamine that you mentioned and see if it helps. If so, I will also look for some Braggs Raw Apple Cider Vinegar. Thank you. Shania 44
I hope it helps Shania, I know how debilitating this BMS is... let me know how you get on :)
Demonia, Thank you. I'll keep you posted. Shania44
It sounds like your tongue is itchy. You may have a food allergy. Some foods will cause burning tongue but itchy as well and that is probably why the anti-histamine is helping you. Get allergy tested.
The burning tongue can be many causes but more than likely most are related to GERD. Gerd is acid reflux - people may not know they even have it because there are no linked symptoms except the burning. Those who have BMS should seek out a GI specialist to get an endoscopy and it will show a hiatal hernia which causes the acid to seep from their tongue and because the tongue rests on the roof of the mouth it burns up into sinus area. It sometime leaves the tongue feeling sore, dry most times, burning all the time. It can even seep out of your sinus area and the acid will plug you up. It can also cause foods to sometimes back up into throat sinus area. It can also cause the throat to possibly burn. This can cause very serious issues if left untreated. I have BMS but am getting a surgery soon to correct this horrible problem.
Sorry, my tongue is not itchy and i do not have an allergy. I have Burning Mouth Syndrome, I have been to an oral specialist, it is quite common, it means the gums, inner cheeks and corners of my mouth are itchy. For me it is hormone related as it is bad just before my period, it's nothing to do with what i eat or don't eat and i have had lots of allergy tests done, plus i have been dairy and gluten free before the BMS started. I take Braggs Raw Apple Cider Vinegar in water throughout the day, and 6grams of Solgar Vitamin C per day and Vitamin B Complex with B12 these help greatly and i take the liquid anti-histamine if it gets really bad, i have been stable with this condition so far.
I have an occipital neuropathy which gives me horrible BMS I get occipital nerve blocks in the back of my skull every 6 weeks by a pain neurologist and it completely goes away My dr is on vacation and my shots are due My tongue is on fire today and I had heard about using hot sauce It is really miserable pain!
