Sometimes after I take it I get heartburn so bad and it just burns all the way up my throat. I feel like I'm going to die from it. Sometimes I throw up and it really hurts. Has this happened to anyone else? How do you prevent it? Or deal with it?

I've been taking prozac 20 mg for years with no problems , until the last few months. Sure enough, blue capsules give me horrible heartburn within 5 min of taking it.
I am taking 20mg in white tablet form and my heartburn is terrible. I have taken prozac in the past without any issue but many years ago, After seeing so many people suggesting the tablet form, I guess for me the capsule is not the issue. Not sure what to do because it is getting very close to kicking in. But I can’t deal with this much longer. Wondering if a different generic version would do the same?
Yes, as a matter of fact, I've been dealing with it for the last hour or so. It happens every couple of weeks, most notably when I don't chug a bunch of water with it. I use generic capsules. The first time this happened I was afraid I was having some kind of heart attack. Since then I've attributed it to not drinking enough water and the pill getting stuck in my esophagus, basically blaming myself. It's a horrendous burning and pressure under my chest going up to my throat. It feels a bit like swallowing a huge flaming hot gulp of air and having it trapped in my chest. The worst part is that absolutely nothing seems to relieve it once it sets in and I've tried everything. Absolute inescapable misery. Anyway, after seeing all of these posts, I definitely think I am going to switch to the pill form and see if that fixes it. Thank you, everyone, for posting.
Try OTC remedies like Prilosec, Prevacid, or Zegerid. No interactions are listed for these medications and Prozac but check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

"Indigestion or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
May occur with drugs that irritate the stomach lining (such as aspirin, iron, NSAIDs, steroids), those that relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) (such as anticholinergics, calcium channel blockers, and nitrates) or reduce LES pressure (such as progesterone, theophylline, and antidepressants).
Prevention and management strategies:
Talk to your doctor about reducing the dosage of, or switching to another drug
Elevate the head of the bed
Avoid foods that also irritate the stomach or affect the LES such as alcohol, carbonated beverages, citrus, coffee, fatty foods, or tomatoes
Quit smoking if you smoke, lose weight if you are overweight, avoid tight waistbands
Talk to your doctor about GERD medications such as antacids, H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors."
Yes! It is really horrible. It has caused me to wake up from a deep sleep and I am unable to get back to sleep because it burns so much. I think it is more of a burning throat syndrome or it could be acid reflux from the gel capsule. Part of me wonders if is the dye (orange/green) could be causing it. The blue and white were okay but my cvs changed manufacturers.
It happened when changing to the 40 mg. capsule (Orange and blue). I kept thinking the pill was stuck in my throat. It wasn't until after reading up on it that I found out that was acid reflux. I had them switch me back to 20 mg. tabs 2x a day instead of the 40 mg 1x a day and all is fine. I never want those 40 mg capsules again. It's like being on fire taking them. Also, taking the 40 mg with food did not help nor taking it with a lot of water.
Last time I checked the heartburn etc. Was not even listed as a possible side effect, crazy. I'm still taking Zoloft instead because of the problem w prozac but unfortunately it doesnt help much at all for my depression.
Yes! I was getting terrible heartburn from the gelcaps - so bad that my head would just pound from the pain. I finally found a way to prevent it. :)
First, don't take it before you're going to lay down.
Second, eat a few bites of food immediately before taking it, then immediately after.
I'm in the habit of eating a banana with my Prozac. I eat 2 bites, take the pill, finish the banana. I've not gotten heartburn since doing this. I usually keep a granola bar in my purse in case I need to take one on the go.
Hopefully, this fix works for others. I know it can be miserable. :(
I have stomach heat after taking prozac .. does eating immediately after it really helps . Pls reply
Unsure if it’s heartburn or my anxiety. But when I went from 20mg to 40mg I noticed heartburn. Very uncomfortable! I also take the white capsules which seems to be the culprit. I’ll drop back down to see if it gets better.
I think you should try eating something after taking your medication typically that calms down the acid reflux, at least for me. It helped a lot.
Does it really helps ?? Pls reply
Yes!! And it hurst so bad i almost went to the er. So I'm not alone because people are like "I've never heard of that from prozac"
If you are taking prozac / fluoxetine in capsule form, that is probably why you are getting such a bad painful reaction. Try taking them in tablet form. When I originally started taking prozac, I was taking it in capsule form. I was getting a painful feeling all up and down my throat and chest that lasted for hours. I changed to tablet form and never ever had that reaction again. I swear I think that somehow the medicine in the capsule is leeching through into the actual capsule. Whereas the tablet form has a hard finish that does not let any of the medication flake off before it gets to your stomach. Hope this helps !
I think you are correct .. i have stomach acid problem from prozac capsules ..i will try tablet form .. thank you
Please stop using Prozac and find a safe alternative.
This is a horrible feeling of burning pain in the throat. I have the blue and orange capsule. I am having a episode now. I was just checking to see if anyone else deal with this mess. Getting off now it hurt so bad. Thanks for listening.
I’m having the same problem!!! It’s the worst pain I’ve ever experienced. I’m 22 and I literally thought I was having a heart attack or something. It’s happened the last 2 nights. Last night I ended up throwing up. Tonight I’m trying baking soda water to see if it helps any. I’ve had mild heartburn with this medicine before but never this bad. My pills are orange and blue. I’ve been taking this brand for a while and it’s just now doing this. I didn’t have any of these problems though with the white and orange pills.
Yes yes yes. I had to stop taking Prozac because the volcanic eruption of acid was so so bad ! I was dumping boxes of baking soda down my gullet to ease the agony. It sucks because this is the ONLY antidepressant that helped my depression . It was my magic pill until it stated doing the acid thing.
