Sometimes after I take it I get heartburn so bad and it just burns all the way up my throat. I feel like I'm going to die from it. Sometimes I throw up and it really hurts. Has this happened to anyone else? How do you prevent it? Or deal with it?

YES!!! I take 40mg of generic prozac. If I take it early in the morning even with a meal with protein like bacon and eggs my stomach will start burning all up in my throat like i drank battery acid! I mean it tears my stomach up. I feel like I have the worst case of acid burning indigestion I have ever had in my life. The only time it does not burn like hell is if I eat a big meal like a burger in the early afternoon and take it then. Tonight I ate a big chicken salad sandwich and took it and the burning startec within an hour of taking it. I am wondering if its the fillers used in the generic version. Thank you for posting your question. I have been having this problem with genetic Prozac for over a year and a half now!
I’ve found a difference between manufacturers. I was on one type for several years with no problem. My pharmacist switched to a different manufacturer and reflux started straight away. Thing is I can’t recall the name of the good one and the pharmacist doesn’t keep records. My theory is some capsules release the drug earlier than others and you do not want fluoxetine in contact with your oesophagus.
Yes exactly except I feel it in the abdomen. Sometimes and I don't know why, severe heartburn kicks in immediately after taking the dose (40mg).
I found if you get them a little wet in your mouth before you swallow keeps from getting the burning in your chest and throat
It’s not the blue capsules! It’s the orange ones too! I take 2 40mg capsules and immediately feel like I’m having a heart attack. I’ll try the tabs I guess ugh.
i get the same thing! i feel better that i’m not the only one. i have been on prozac off and on for the past 8 or so years. sometimes it doesn’t happen, but most of the time it causes SEVERE heartburn and pain in my esophagus, usually followed by nausea and vomiting. some people are saying it has to do with the new blue capsule form? honestly, that would make sense, because i don’t think it was this bad before they switched to the blue capsule. anyone know of anything that helps?
I am so happy that I found this feed. I've been taking Prozac for a long time. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does I'm totally miserable. I never said anything to anyone about it because I thought I was just imagining it. I am going to check with my Dr. About the tablet form or mixing the capsule in some food everyday. Thank you so much for sharing your comments with me!
What I think happens is the capsule get stuck 3/4 of the way down and sits there. The capsule then disintegrates and the medicine causes a chemical burn. I get these too. I freakin hate them with a passion. Had I known there was a tablet form I would have switched long ago. I will be asking my doctor about tablet form very soon.
Hey there - So what your experiencing is not heartburn. Rather, the capsule is more than likely dissipating in your esophagus... This is why many here are recommending the tablet form... The moment you put the capsule in your mouth it begins to evaporate and thus disperses in the lower esophagus... Therefore the medication is actually causing the irritation. It feels like heartburn but I suggest it’s the content of the capsule (the medicine) causing the burning sensation. I think some manufacturers have changed or gone to a capsule that is dissolving too quickly thus dispensing the contents prematurely... Take capsule with two full glasses of water and swallow immediately as it begins to dissolve the moment it makes contact with saliva...
I was wondering the same thing. I’ve been taking Prozac for almost 2 weeks now and I have been getting heartburn so bad it is making me sick to my stomach.
YES! This happens to me often, it’s awful! It almost feels like the pill gets stuck somewhere in my throat and won’t go down all the way. But it hurts so bad and I feel like I’m gonna throw up.
I get very bad heart burn at times after taking this drug
Does anyone have upset stomach and acid indigestion on generic Prozac? I started at 20 mg and had some stomach issues w/ 20 mg, and doctor upped to 40 mg. It’s gotten really bad after starting 40, so today he cut me back. I have to get the generic for insurance reasons.
HELL YA, happening right now I've been dying all day! Just like you described and it's not all the time but sometimes. The first time this happened I was going to Paul Mitchell school an took it before going in an I guess it didn't go down all the way an was somewhere down my esophagus on its way to my stomach an after time it busted open and I literally coughed powder out of my mouth right in class an almost choked to death! Every time after that it just burned... I took it this morning an it's after 7pm an I've been debilitated all day. I take omeprazole already but I chewed some tums an even drank some liquid antacid and still nothing but burning pain an almost throw up. Sometimes I do throw up sometimes not. But hell ya that happens to other ppl... today's been AWFUL.
My husband has been taking 40mg generic fluoxetine for the past 15 years. Over the course of the past few months he has come down with severe and chronic heart burn, general stomach issues and a persistent dry cough/wheeze.
About a month ago, we realized that these symptoms were at their worst about 20 minutes after he would take his fluoxetine capsule.
Once we realized this I began researching common fluoxetine side effects online and discovered a very large population of people complaining about the same thing - namely rapid onset of heartburn about 20 minutes after taking the capsule and a persistent cough/wheeze. Over the course of my research I came across one person who suggested that it might be the capsule itself causing this issue. After reading that, I had my husband switch to the tablet form, however he still experienced no relief from his symptoms.
At that point I was starting to get nervous that there was something else wrong with him and that we were mistaken in blaming the fluoxetine as the root cause.
So I tried to remember back to exactly when he first started complaining about these symptoms and then went back to see if we had any old pill bottles kicking around from that time. I figured that, in a last ditch effort to get to the bottom of all of this, Maybe I would see a change in manufacturer that would explain the sudden onset of these symptoms. SURE ENOUGH, the pharmacy had changed manufacturers from TEVA pharmaceuticals to AUROBINDO on the same month that he started with the heartburn, cough and stomach issues.
We went to the pharmacy and had them place a special order for the Teva brand capsules and ALL of my husbands symptoms went away suddenly and Completely!!
I hope this information can help others out there who are suffering from the same symptoms and who suspect it could be the fluoxetine. It surely is!! You should ask your pharmacy to order the Teva brand capsules.
