I tapered off cymbalta and took my last dose 16 days ago. The cymbalta started the anxiety and it has been getting worse the longer I am off it. I was at the hospital this morning and hard a terrible panic attack. They gave me Ativan which slowly helped and when my doctor got there he gave me buspirone 5 mg to take 3 times a day. Will that help me? What kind of side effects can I expect and what should I look out for?
Has anyone else taken it for anxiety and did it help or hurt the problem?
Has anyone taken Buspirone for anxiety and panic attacks?

YES!!! I've been taking it for about 10 years and I've found it to be about 95% effective. As far as side effects I've had none at all.
The con is that it seems to only be effective for about half of users, but it's dirt cheap so if it doesn't work you're not out anything. Another pro is that it's not addictive like the benzodiazepines.
It should be taken daily NOT as needed.
This link will take you to the literature on buspirone... uses, side effects, dosage, etc. When you're reading about side effects I would recommend reading the Professional information as it also give the percentages of users who may experience a potential side effect.

I've taken buspirone for 7-8 years and it's the only drug that has helped my anxiety disorders including PTSD. Never had side effects at all.
It totally depends on your response to the drug and it's about a 50/50 chance that it will help any given individual. I think it's a worth a try though.

I have been taking it for about 4 years along with Lexapro.I decided to stop Lexapro since I have been on it for a long time and now take Buspirone 10mg. a day,was taking it 2 times a day but now only one time a day.I think it helps me with anxiety and depression but I want to quit taking it also and try something else more natural if I need anything.I don't have any side effects from it.
I was put on it for anxiety, and can't really say if it did anything for the anxiety. But I now know that less than a month after my doctor increased dosage from 20mg to 30mg I started having severe pain in the back-left of my neck and left shoulder, as well as Restless Leg Syndrome. It's been 9 months of severe pain, until just realizing it now! I'm getting weened off if it completely - currently at 20gm again, with much reduced pain. Bizarrely, the drug (at least for me) has had a "Viagra Effect," literally increasing my sex drive!! Unfortunately, it's not worth living with the pain, so OFF I go.
Yes. I recommend it. I took it since 2011 and started out 10mg twice a day. I didn’t feel any side effects. I felt relief quickly as others I have met took a week or so to benefit from buspar. I hope you get relief and it helps you. I was going to ask my doctor about retrying it since, it’s been almost a year I was discontinued. It just pooped out after being on it for a long time. I also, didn’t have any issues discontinuing buspar no withdrawals or side effects- many meds have...
I hope it helps you give it a chance.
Take care!

I've taken 10mgs three times a day, and it completely controls all my symptoms, as Wildcat stated. I have been taking it for over 3 years now. It's the best medication I have taken for my anxiety.
I've taken 60mg/day for almost five years and it completely controls all my symptoms.
Wildcat vet, how did you know you needed to go up to the max dose? I’m on 15mg 3x a day for the last 5 months but still occasionally have anxiety and panic. For the most part , I feel great. I’m wondering if I should ask to go up to the max dose?
I ve started buspirone 6 weeks ago for anxiety but up to know I don't feel any benefit. I addition I have insomnia. I don't know if it really works. I am at 30 mg per day
It never worked for me at any dose. I am on Klonipin and getting good results.
Buspirone may work well for some people, but it did nothing for me as far as anxiety and panic attacks. I was on it for a little over 6 months and I finally told my doctor to give me something else because it did nothing for me.
But everyone is different. What works for one person may not work for another.
I have taken Buspirone, didn't help and the side effects. I had were, swollen tounge, closed windpipe, eyes swollen closed & couldn't breath. Went to the ER & the Dr. told me it was common with that medicine.
Be aware of how your feeling & mabe talk to your Dr. About somethng else. I pray feel better
Yes, lady works great but I had to discontinue the drug do to a rare side effect in vision changes but very helpful with panic attacks add on with klonopin made me take a lot less benzos and felt less overall anxiety but the eye site for me was and issue at the time... I may go back on it since, it's the only drug you can take while pregnant and was told my whole life I couldn't become pregnant found a way... but, waiting a little bit to have a stable household...
Take care!
God Bless!

Hope all goes well so that you can have that little bundle of joy.
Did you ever try effexor xr -snri- I dont remember if I have ever asked that or not??? CLONIDINE also helps for anxiety and other stuff... topamax helps me as well... not sure what to do as I have had panic attacks since getting off two meds trying another and my muscles pain meds havent been renewed since I was IP so, I want to get off meds but at the same time get stable enough to pursue a stable household/finacially and emotionally so, I can have what I was always told I couldn't... and all the work I put into living I for darn sure NOW feel it has been worth it to look forward to having something to look forward to and keep the hope that things will change. .. didnt have that before... all I have was anxiety and pain to look forward to. .. so, what I'm trying to say is there was a reason I survived I wasnt done living uet and the news I got probed it! So keep going your not done yet you will find peace and joy and I have weird techniques to stay grounded but work for me if you ever need support! Im here/hear for you chickie!
Thank you lady... me too! Working on PTSD isn't easy but worth it in order to become a survivor instead of the victim! At times I feel things pop up at very high stress levels and time of month besides that its not all day everyday anymore I still have a bit to work on with that but I can deal with not being disabled by it knowing I am no longer the victim taking my self and my strength and control back that it no longer controls my life is the best trudging through the shyt uncapped my secrets had a voice again I did... if I can you can! I was the worst case the partial care seen with self harm and flashbacks... when I left there I was free from self harm and very few FBs I slip once and a while with SH but not nearly as bad as before nor days in a row... IT'S PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION!!!
TAKE CARE NO FEAR &GOD BLESS

Just so everyone knows I didn't take it for very long as I had an allergic reaction to it so had to stop taking it. It wasn't doing anything for the anxiety anyway. Turns out my general anxiety was a side effect from stopping Cymbalta and putting me on a low dose of Sertraline fixed the problem within 2 days of starting it.
Now I just have to deal with the PTSD. That is extreme so may take awhile.
Hello, I suffer from panic attacks, and was initially put on 5mg diazepam, 3 x
Daily. This was in effect for 2-3 yrs, it was helpful but I knew That benzos are addictive and withdrawal can be dangerous. Next my provider said senior staff wanted me off benzos, to take Buspar (buspirone), for me no good, complained and was put on hydroxyzine (antihistamine) it made a drowsy anxious person. Finally back on diazepam using sparingly. I hope you have better results lady2882.
