Aimovig is a once-monthly injection used for the prevention of migraine in adults. It can help prevent migraines before they start and reduce the number of days per month you have a migraine.

It is an injection given under the skin, which can be self-administered using the SureClick auto injector or prefilled syringe.

This medicine works by blocking a protein called calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), which may play a key role in migraines. CGRP is involved in pain transmission, and levels increase during a migraine attack. It may also play a causative role in the formation of migraine attacks.

Aimovig belongs to a group of medicines called CGRP inhibitors. It was first FDA-approved on May 17, 2018, and there is no generic available.

The most common side effects are injection site reactions and constipation. New-onset or worsening of pre-existing hypertension may occur. This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur.
