TMS Oral Granules (Canada)
This treatment applies to the following species:Sulfadiazine and Trimethoprim Oral Granules
For Veterinary Use Only
Antibiotic
DIN 02503425
Description
TMS Oral Granules contains trimethoprim, a synthetic antibacterial, and sulfadiazine, a sulfonamide in combination at a ratio of 1:5. The two components of TMS Oral Granules produce a sequential blockade of bacterial metabolism, giving a level of activity many times greater than that obtained from either drug alone.
Dosage Form
TMS Oral Granules is a dosage form containing 6.7% w/w trimethoprim USP and 33.3% w/w sulfadiazine USP in an inert carrier.
Spectrum Of Activity
TMS Oral Granules provides effective antibacterial activity against a wide range of infections caused by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Pathogenic bacteria which can cause infection in the horse and are susceptible to TMS Oral Granules in vitro include:
Very Sensitive Organisms
Escherichia coli
Salmonella spp.
Haemophilus spp.
Shigella equirulis
Pasteurella spp.
Sensitive Organisms
Streptococcus spp.
Klebsiella spp.
Proteus spp.
Bordetella spp.
Listeria monocytogenes
Staphylococcus spp. (including penicillinase-producing staphylococci)
Corynebacterium spp.
Actinobacillus spp.
Non-sensitive Organisms
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Leptospira spp.
TMS Oral Granules Indications
TMS Oral Granules is indicated in horses for the treatment of the following infections when caused by susceptible organisms:
- Acute strangles
- Other respiratory infections
- Wound and postoperative infections
TMS Oral Granules Dosage And Administration
To reduce the development of antimicrobial resistance and maintain effectiveness, use this antibiotic prudently and for the shortest duration required to achieve the desired clinical outcome.
The usual dose of TMS Oral Granules for horses, ponies and foals is 3.75 g per 50 kg. The content of one scoop (37.5 g) is sufficient to treat 480 kg liveweight. This dose provides 30 mg/kg of actives daily.
The granules should be mixed with a small amount of palatable feed. TMS Oral Granules is palatable but if the treated horse does not consume the medication in total, then parenteral or individual oral dosage with an alternative product should be considered.
Treatment should be given once daily until 2-3 days after the animal becomes asymptomatic. The usual course of treatment is for not longer than 7 consecutive days.
Contraindications
TMS Oral Granules should not be used in horses showing marked liver parenchymal damage or blood dyscrasias, nor in those with a history of sulfonamide sensitivity.
Adverse Reactions
No significant adverse reactions have been reported.
TMS Oral Granules Cautions
TMS Oral Granules should not be administered to pregnant mares as the effects of this product when used as recommended, on the unborn foal have not been determined.
