The secret to happy dogs

Scientifically proven*

*The efficacy of ADAPTIL® has been demonstrated by numerous clinical studies published in reputable scientific journals or presented at international conferences (under the trademark D.A.P.® until 2011).

Nursing mother dogs naturally produce an appeasing pheromone. This pheromone provides reassurance to the puppies, helping them to feel safe and secure when encountering new experiences and unknown environments. Clinical studies have demonstrated that a synthetic analogue of the dog appeasing pheromone (D.A.P.®) helps provide reassurance and comfort to puppies and dogs of all ages.

ADAPTIL® contains D.A.P.® and is therefore recommended for preventing and reducing stress related behavior in puppies and adult dogs. ADAPTIL® also helps to make puppies and adult dogs more responsive to behavioral therapy and training.

The efficacy of ADAPTIL® has been demonstrated by numerous studies published in reputable scientific journals and presented at international conferences (under the trademark D.A.P.® until 2011).

Canine Stress

To adapt to a new environment or coping with a temporary challenge is potentially stressful for most dogs. In some dogs, mild fears and worries can develop into phobias or stress-related conditions.

Particular attention should be paid to puppies during the socialisation phase (from 3-16 weeks): negative or the lack of experiences during this period may make them more likely to develop stress-related behavioral problems in adulthood. (noise phobias, separation-related disorders, etc).

ADAPTIL® Diffuser contains D.A.P.® which offers a natural and convenient way to help manage stress-related behaviors in your dog during:

- challenging situations (i.e. fireworks, loud noises, staying alone at home)

- adapting to new surroundings (i.e. adoption, moving home, new family member or pet)

Combining ADAPTIL® Diffuser with ADAPTIL® Collar or ADAPTIL® Spray may provide optimal results for dogs showing multiple fears in different situations (see table below). Consult your veterinarian for more information.

ADAPTIL® can also be used under the direction of a behaviorist and alongside behavioral therapy to help in the management of clinical behavior problems such as separation anxiety, noise phobia, etc.

ADAPTIL® Diffuser is not recommended for use in cases of hyperactivity or aggression.

Directions For Use

Each vial lasts approximately 4 weeks. However air turnover, and diffuser location will affect how fast the diffusion occurs (this should only be considered as a guide). It is recommended the diffuser be checked a few days before the refill is due to be changed.

A peel off sticker can be found on each ADAPTIL® Refill vial. This sticker can be applied to a calendar or diary to remind you when to check your ADAPTIL® Diffuser.

Duration of use must be adjusted depending on the nature/cause of the fear (see table below) and according to the duration of combined behavioral therapy.

The diffuser should be replaced after six months of use or after using six refills.

To help your dog cope with firework/thunderstorm exposure

- One to two weeks prior to the expected event plug an ADAPTIL® Diffuser in the room where your dog spends the most time or where the dog retreats to during firework exposure. The longer your dog is exposed to the pheromone prior to the fireworks, the better prepared he will be to cope with the challenge.

- ADAPTIL® Spray can be applied to the dog’s bedding to give additional support during the event.

- It is recommended to keep the dog indoors during the firework/event. Otherwise ADAPTIL® Collar can be an efficacious alternative for outdoor dogs.

To help reduce stress when staying alone at home

- Plug the ADAPTIL® Diffuser in the room where your dog will spend the most time.

- The ADAPTIL® Spray can be used in conjunction with the ADAPTIL® Diffuser to give additional support.

To help adaptation to new surroundings (adoption, moving home, new family member or pet)

- At least 24 hours before the puppy or dog faces the new surroundings, plug in an ADAPTIL® Diffuser at floor level in the room where the dog will sleep and spend the most time. The diffuser should be switched on continuously for at least 4 weeks and the refill replaced as required.

Contact your veterinarian for advice should behavioral or environmental modifications be needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pheromone is in ADAPTIL® and is it safe for humans?

The pheromone in ADAPTIL® is D.A.P.® and is identical in nature to the canine appeasing pheromone secreted by mother dogs from 3-5 days after the puppy’s birth. As pheromones are species-specific, canine pheromones will have no effect on humans or other pets.

Is the ADAPTIL® Diffuser device safe?

The ADAPTIL® Diffuser device was tested and approved by underwriters Laboratories (UL).

Should you use the diffuser if you suffer from asthma?

In addition to the pheromone content, ADAPTIL® contains a paraffin-type mineral oil of a kind common to other air freshener devices. If you consider yourself to be particularly sensitive, or have had problems when using similar devices in the past, then we advise you to use the device only after consulting your physician or use ADAPTIL® Collar or Spray as an alternative.

Why should I not plug the diffuser in under furniture?

Oil vapor (carrying the pheromones) will rise in a column of warm air above the device. If this rising air is blocked (e.g. under a shelf, table, cabinet, etc) the oil may re-condense and leave a visible mark. Circulation of pheromone will be impaired and the efficacy of the product may be affected.

Can air fresheners /home fragrance be used at the same time as ADAPTIL®?

Air fresheners and strong odors can bother pets (or even stress them) due to their heightened sensitivity to smells. It is recommended to remove any strong home fragrance before plugging in an ADAPTIL® Diffuser as it may restrict the pheromone detection by your pet.

Should I switch the diffuser off at night?

No - the diffuser should be left on continuously throughout day and night.

Why isn’t the level of liquid in the diffuser going down?

The diffusion of the liquid from the ADAPTIL® Diffuser is a very slow process. As such, it can be very difficult to see any change to the level in the device over the first week of use. Slight variations will occur depending on air turnover. Check that the wick is not broken (should extend from the bottom of the liquid to a level flush with the top of the heated ceramic plate). Check that the device is turned on all the time (sometimes an electrical outlet is controlled by a light switch). Finally, try the device in a different electrical socket.

Do I need to change the diffuser refill even though the liquid has not completely run out?

Some devices will run for a little longer than the 4 weeks due to differences in location, air turnover, etc so you may get slightly more than 4 weeks. But remember that the device will never empty completely as the last few millilitres of liquid are not sufficiently in contact with the wick. It is therefore recommended to replace the refill after 4 weeks of use.

The diffuser smells of burning - is it safe?

New diffusers may smell slightly for the first 24 hours, just as an electrical heater might when dust has collected on it. Diffusers in a very dusty environment may smell more persistently. Make sure that a dog or cat has not urinated onto the device and that there is no debris on the heating element. If the device is used continuously for long periods of time, we recommend that it is changed every 6 months or every 6 refills.

How long should I use ADAPTIL®?

It depends on the nature and the extent of the reason you are using ADAPTIL®. The table above will give you some indication. However, if your dog is undergoing behavioral therapy, your veterinarian or behaviorist may adjust the duration of use to your dog’s specific case.

How long before the diffuser spreads ADAPTIL® throughout the area?

We recommend allowing at least several hours (ideally 24) for the diffuser to be fully functional. This allows the wick to become fully impregnated and for ADAPTIL® to be released. However, for those stressful events that can be anticipated, it’s recommended to plug in the diffuser several days before the event.

How long should it take to see an effect on my dog with the ADAPTIL® Diffuser?

The ADAPTIL® Diffuser will be fully functioning within 24 hours of plugging in. The effect on the dog will depend on the nature, extent and duration of the problem for which ADAPTIL® is used.

Some dogs and/or some indications will show signs of improvement in less than a week, whereas some will require one month to exhibit visible improvement. In any case, we recommend continued use of ADAPTIL® for at least one month before assessing its effectiveness. Finally, effectiveness is also dependent on good implementation of environmental and behavioral modifications concurrent to pheromone use and setting proper expectations for the pet owner.

What type of behaviour problems will not be helped by ADAPTIL®?

If the behaviour is unrelated to stress (over-excitement, aggression, lack of toilet training, hyperactivity or boredom), ADAPTIL® will have no effect.

Can I plug a ADAPTIL® Diffuser in a room where there are caged birds?

If a caged bird can handle wax-based non-scented candles, there shouldn’t be a problem (the diffuser is a wax-based paraffin oil, similar to a candle, and it is odorless). However, some birds are known to have sensitive respiratory systems therefore we recommend using the diffuser in a different room.

I have a diffuser plugged in my house. But now, I’m pregnant. Is this dangerous? Should I stop using it?

You may continue using your diffuser. According to the toxicological data on the components of our products, no particular risk is expected following inhalation of the pheromone products when used as recommended. Particularly with pregnant women, the available toxicological data on laboratory animal species show that no teratogenic nor foetotoxic effect can be associated with the use of a ADAPTIL® Diffuser. However, as a precaution it is not recommended to plug ADAPTIL® Diffuser into a poorly ventilated room where people spend most of their time, and in particular not in bedrooms.

Can I use an ADAPTIL® Diffuser simultaneously with an air-conditioner?

An ADAPTIL® Diffuser can be used in a house where there is an air-conditioner, provided that it is plugged away from the air-conditioner, vents, cold air returns, or exhaust fan.

Can I use Feliway® and ADAPTIL® in the same household?

Yes, the pheromones in each product are what we call species-specific; ADAPTIL® will affect only dogs and the feline facial pheromone will affect only cats.

After using pheromones for a long time, will my pet develop a resistance to the product and will it eventually stop working?

Usually, for indications that require long periods of treatment, the behavioral therapy implemented by the owner is of major importance. Over time, modifications made by the pet owner can sometimes be disregarded, leading to a lack of compliance. While this may cause a “relapse” by the pet, there is no habituation to the perception of pheromone in natural conditions.
