Precautions

Your doctor will check your child's progress closely while you are receiving this medicine. This will allow your doctor to see if the medicine is working properly and to decide if your child should continue to receive it.

Call your child's doctor right away if your child has fluid that continues to drain from the ear beyond the first few days after the ear tube surgery, or if the ear becomes painful.

Along with its needed effects, ciprofloxacin otic (the active ingredient contained in Cetraxal) may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

General adverse events

The most commonly reported side effects included application site pain, ear pruritus, and headache.^[Ref]

• Common (1% to 10%): Ear pruritus, ear pain, ear discomfort/stinging, otitis media, ear infection (fungal; otomycosis)/fungal ear superinfection
• Postmarketing reports: Crying, ear congestion, otorrhea, pyrexia^[Ref]

Nervous system

• Common (1% to 10%): Headache/cephalea, dizziness, vertigo, dysgeusia/bitter taste
• Uncommon (0.1% to 1%): Tinnitus^[Ref]

Psychiatric

• Common (1% to 10%): Irritability^[Ref]

Respiratory

• Common (1% to 10%): Nasopharyngitis, rhinorrhea^[Ref]

Local

• Common (1% to 10%): Mild local intolerance, application site pain^[Ref]

• Very rare (less than 0.01%): Toxic epidermolysis, exfoliative dermatitis, generalized rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, urticaria

Hypersensitivity

Systemic quinolone therapy:

• Frequency not reported: Serious and sometimes fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactic) reactions (some accompanied by cardiovascular collapse, loss of consciousness, tingling, pharyngeal/facial edema, dyspnea, urticaria, itching)
